Data Communications Books

This is a well-written overview of the issues of security as a whole. Worth reading even if your enterprise is not all that huge. Not just a theoretical treatise, there are real examples here too.

It is clear that the author has both the experience and the expertise needed to address this topic with confidence and flair.

If security is a significant part of your job, read this book.

In 1997, the editors of this work organized A Meeting of the Minds 2: ITEC Virtual Conference '97. Presenters from around the globe submitted essays which formed the basis for electronic discussions during the virtual conference. This collection includes over 40 essays which were originally presented at this groundbreaking conference. Contributors are from Australia, Canada, Iceland, the UK and the USA.

This is an excellent collection of essays dealing with many of the concerns of our profession as we continue to embrace the electronic world. Not only useful to teacher librarians, but could be used to further educate teachers and administrators on the role of the teacher librarian in a digital world.

Unlike so many books in the Internet/Computer field, this one does not try to sell itself with bulk. Many 400 page books contain maybe 50 pages of worthwile information and a lot of filler. This one follows the old maxim that it's better to teach a person to fish than give a person a fish. NetResearch gives a good overview of Internet research and teaches you how to think like a researcher. Since search tools constantly change, this book will not quickly become obsolete, because most search tool contain their own help pages to introduce the latest features. The understanding of how to choose and combine search methods and tools, however, is what this book is all about.

This book is one of the best references for answers to questions about writing login scripts for both Novell 3x and 4x servers. I provide system support for system administrators and use this book frequently to solve their problems with their login scripts.

It provides many examples detailing many needs. It is written in an easy to read format and the explanations are succinct.

I highly recommend this book.

This book covers not only analysis but also design and implementation issues for IPX protocol suite. There are not many books on IPX implementation. Here is one of them.

There are a lot of data communication protocols out there beside the TCP/IP suite. This is a very colorful and graphic display of the OSI layer modle and the related protocols. Good fun.

the reliability calculation methods used

The 1997 book "Network Design Using EcoNets" is a revised edition of the 1990 book "Network Topology Optimization - The Art and Science of Network Design". The new book also has 5 additional chapters dealing with newer technologies such as PCS, AIN, Backbone Networks etc. The new book maintains the older book's strength as both a textbook and guidebook for networking specialists. The new book also provides a diskette with the latest network design software called EcoNets that was introduced in the older book.

You will find this book discusses LAN, and MAN standards. The How, what, is described in detail. References are made directly to ITU-T and IEEE standards. Expect to find detailed descriptions of the MAC and LLC components of HDLC, 802.X LLC, LAP/B, LAP/D. Also a good reference on MAN standards DQDB, SMDS, ISDN, Broadband ISDN, LAP/D. This book is not for the network programmer in general but an excellent reference for the data communications network architect, engineer or student studying LAN and MAN standards. (Upper undergraduate to 1st year Graduate level)

The nature of networks is changing. Instead of many different protocols, we find the world is changing to be IP-centric where the internet (from the beginning), voice (VOIP), LANs, WANs, IP over optical, and more are converging into new ways to buy and sell communications channels.

This book is aimed at providing both the sellers and buyers with the information they need to handle the new concepts. It is written at a fairly technical, but fairly high level. It is aimed at understanding the concepts, the basic structure of the evolving communications world, not at the level of how to program a router.

At this time, a lot of the material in this book is experimental in nature rather than the final products that will emerge in the near future.
