i bought two books of the "dummy series" (internet and htlm) and originally got the cyber dictionnary as a back-up. now it's the other way around! it is written in a no-nonsense, straight forward manner, presents the information clearly with tons of cross references, and is thus VERY informative.

First, i must thank the author who wrote this book is very helpful when i encountered a problem from this book, i e-mail to him.
Some of my background, i'm a student studying at "Informatics", an IT college in which a guidance recommends to read this book for the CS course. I used this book and got A grade for the Networking module.
This book is well-written and easy to understand and to learn in a manner. Although you might not read whole chapters in this book because it covers many different kind of topics in relation to computer network and the flow of data in a variety of network environments. It also gives you a basis of networking concept including the most updated networking technologies and the techniques, such as "Internet 2, IPv6, Switching, and Encryption," used nowadays. It is designed for those who are now studying year 1 or even year 2 at university or planning to excel or now working in IT industry. That's why it designated "A Business User's Approach"
Because of the book is to be designed for different kind of people, therefore you might just want to read some of which chapters are helpful based on what and where of your uses, situations, and backgrounds, etc... You just need to follow your learning pace on your studies or your jobs. Random reading in this book is further the way in which helps you to understand deeply and to apply.
To sum up, i think it will not be disappointed to you.
That's all my own opinions. Those who have any opinions are welcome to give a review to my views for this book. Thank you!!

Data Communications Using Object-Oriented Design and C++
by Anil Ananthaswamy
Book and Disk, January 1995
Mcgraw-Hill Series on Computer Communications
ISBN: 0079118577
To put it short, the book is worthy. Not perfect--terminology is strange at times (the author calls event-driven programming "asynchronous" which is, first, a strange choice, and, second, confusing--especially in a book on communications, where the term "asynchronous" is an accepted term used to signify something very different; the author calls states "state machines" which, the two being distinct entities, is, again, confusing a bit.) The editor should have caught these few cases of failed diction. Some of the proposed designs are questionable at times (new'ing state objects all the time? Not a good idea...) BUT: these are lateral things. What matters most is that this book is unique in what it covers and it does a pretty adequate job showing (practically, in code) how this kind of programs are written. I know of no other book of the same kind, and therefore highly recommend it to any programmer dabbling into communications area.

This book is considered the "Bible" of data link protocols.
Here you will find ASYNC (XMODEM, etc), HDLC/SDLC, BiSYNC,
LAP/B, LAP/M, Signal System 7 (SS7), ieee 802.x, LLC,
described in detail. Complete discussions of asynchronous
and synchronous link layer controls and error correction
are discussed in detail. This is a must have for the
data communications professionals library. I don't even
loan this book out...

Computer vision is becoming increasingly important in several industrial applications such as automated inspection, robotic manipulations and autonomous vehicle guidance. These tasks are performed in a 3D world and it is imperative to gather reliable information on the 3D structure of the scene. This book is about passive techniques for depth recovery, where the scene is illuminated only by natural light as opposed to active methods where a special lighting device is used for scene illumination. Passive methods have a wider range of applicability and also correspond to the way humans infer 3D structure from visual images.

Excellent Systematic Approach to Digital Design using ASMs

Review Date: 2001-05-02
The author provides in-depth explanation of the advantages of using ASM for digital designs plus some explanation on the design methodology towards FPGA (Xilinx). Lots of design examples in ASM and the equivalent VHDL codes for users to try, learn and understand. Suitable for beginners and advanced designers to start trying the ASM design methodology to take advantage of the systematic and heuristic design approach using ASM as introduced by the author. In fact, there're tools supporting the direct ASM approach, and the book would become a very good methodology reference.
