I am an EE but spent most of my career programming in C. This book is an excellent tutorial, beginning with the basics and gradually covering the more complex aspects of VHDL. It clearly explains the difference between sequential (traditional) programming and concurrent programming--both are used in VHDL. It also clearly defines the differences between the modelling stage (not covered in detail) and the design stage (Register Transfer Level - which is covered in great detail). Finally, he explains how to set up a test bench. Within 2 months of reading this book, other engineers were coming to me for advice. I literally wore out the binding!

Yet another Pardue embedded classic

Once again Joe Pardue ("C Programming For Microcontrollers") shows his wry sense of humor and expertise in embedded systems and programming. This time he has produced a breadboard oriented USB interface (using the FTDI R232R chip) which this book examines with code examples in C# and VB.Net (both available free from Microsoft). The interface can act both as a USB based RS232 virtual port and as a 12 bit general purpose interface with several bells and whistles. Drivers for both types of applications are free, and currently the interface is available for $20 (smileymicros.com).
This book does not teach the ins and outs of USB (you'll want Axelson's book for that). It is application, not theory, oriented, and as such contains fully coded applications. There are also several simple hardware experiments to illustrate the power and techniques needed to use the interface.

It covers how voice can be transported over different technologies - IP. ATM, Frame Relay and Cable. Technically, very well written. It compares these technology very well. It also covers QoS. If you are in Telecom, keep this book on your desk. To the point and accurate discussion.

This book is 20 years old, still it outperforms almost all modern books on the subject when it comes to clarity and sense of humor.
The book IS NOT OUTDATED!
If you are still using plain old telephone service and if you company has a PBX this book is probably the best to start with. It explains how the phone works, describes all the usefull features such as call forwarding and automatic call distribution -- all the features that are still in use today!
But I bought this book not even because of that but because I was impressed by the explanation how a computer works. That's truly amazing explanation -- I'm a network administrator and I've read many books about computers but what I've read in those few pages was just brilliant.
This book is dirt cheap here to buy -- read it and you'll have a great time and learn all you need to know about analog phone technology.

I am a retired executive and have started my own consulting business recently. The new world of Wireless Internet has intrigued me for some time but knowing nothing about it I was reluctant to get too far on my own until just last week I got a copy of the book "WAP Integration" by Srdjan Vujosevic and Robert Laberge.
The book is very imressive in that the subject matters are well organized, the writting style is easy to read and understand and at times fun , yet contains a wealth of information covering topics for those who are amatures (like me)all the way to the more professional and knowledgeble people whose daily life is programming or creating new application protocols.
I am able to recommend the book as a "five star" product based on my limited know how of this exciting and upcoming new technology.
I am now "technically" competent enough to send e-mails through my wireless (but Internet capable) phone, and understand some of the technical concepts which were very hazy at best when I started into the book.
I especially like the info provided in "Related Sites" enabling the reader to further enhance their knowledge in any particular focused area.

This book is perfectly focused on the intention of setting Public Wi-Fi Hotspots. By this I mean that the book doesn't load you down with all the technical details of how wireless networks work, but instead dives right into the business/organizational benefits of running such a network as a hotspot. There is a very brief chapter at the end that gives an overview of RF or wireless signals (literally 14 pages) and this is perfect. Great job staying on focus.
The book presents the implementation of Wi-Fi Hotspots from start-to-finish covering these topics:
-Why Implement a Hotspot
-Simple Quick-Install Hotspots
-Adcvanced Hotspot technologies
-Marketing your hotspot
-Avoiding freeloaders who consume your bandwidth
-Common problems and resolutions
-Hotspot safety and security
...among others. If you are considering implementing a hotspot for pay or for marketing purposes, this book is a great place to start. -Tom Carpenter, Author: Wireless# Certification Official Study Guide, CWNA Certification Official Study Guide 4th Edition, CWSP Certification Official Study Guide 2nd Edition

This is the book that really made me understand network performance. It covers performance/delay issues right through the protocol stack.
The Author works through examples to show the reader where performance issues may arise. Many popular products and protocols are covered.
Time after time I see clients moving LAN applications into the WAN environment and failing. All these clients make the same basic mistakes, mistakes they would never have made had they read this book.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I own three copies, while my employer owns two. We struggle to keep ONE copy in the office!
