Best Publication to date on developing Desktop Publications
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

If you wish to self-publish and you use Framemaker or Ventura software, this book is for you. I've read numerous books on the subject, but none so detailed (and accurate). Takes you from Style Designs and Page Layout to Graphics and Final Publication. This is written for the DTP user who is looking for help in using the software as well as tips to develop a professional publication, whether it is a manual or book. A ten star rating without question

Format is very important to create a good manual

To start a software company and develop the product in UK, I looked for books about writing user manuals. Other books focus on how to write good contents. But this book focuses on how to create a good format. In the process of the manual production, I had to make a decision whether I create the manual internally or ask any technical documentation companies. By interviewing the technical documentation companies, I found that I had to provide contents anyway. However, the structure of contents depends on how to format the manual. By adopting the exact manual structure suggested in this book, I first defined the format of the manual , wrote the contents by myself and asked a technical editor to correct them for mistakes in grammar. By using this process, I could write a manual with a short time and less confusion. This book made me realize that the user manual writing is like a database development, putting the right details of information into the right layer of the document (Chapter, Sub chapter, note, etc). And I had never realized that I had to use so many fonts to write a nice looking manual and that there are font designers who spend their life to create new fonts. In next edition, It will be helpful if the book provides a enclosed diskette which contains templates.

A Groundbreaking Wireless LAN Book
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-30
This book is an excellent resource on understanding the key concepts of wireless LAN and wireless ATM. About 80% of the book focuses on wireless LAN. I am from a non-wireless field but this book brings out the salient features of wireless networks in a very succinct and insightful manner. Understanding these concepts allow one to grapple with emerging wireless LAN technologies, which is currently evolving very quickly. It was no surprise that an abridged version of the book was distributed with Cisco wireless LAN products. To me, the book is written with the right depth. If you enjoy reading magazines such as IEEE Spectrum and Technology Review, this is the book for you.

Eye-opening intro to illustration for technical wordsmiths
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2001-04-21
I bought this book when it was freshly published. At the time, I had written software and hardware documentation for two years. I'd made some clumsy attempts to add illustrations (beyond screen shots) to my manuals, but my results were clearly amateurish. Horton's book was the right mix of theory and practical application for me to quickly improve my illustrations. From this book, I began to develop a sense of when and how to use illustration in lieu of text and to supplement text. I also learned several rules of thumb for effective presentation of illustrations in my manuals.

This book didn't make me a graphic artist. Instead, it gave me the vocabulary and mindset I needed to learn more -- sometimes just by looking at the work of an experienced graphic artist. The foundation Horton gave me continues to serve me well, for which I am grateful.

A superb book, well-researched and easy to understand

No matter what your background or previous design experience, this insightful book will help you design better documents, both online and in print. First selling the importance of visual communication, Horton goes on to explain what elements are required for effective visual communication. Horton extensively cites the results of scholarly research but proffers an easily understood masterpiece from which any reader will benefit.

Solid Informatics Text, should be mandated for all residents

Review Date: 2004-01-29
Until very recently, informatics is something pathologists typically learned by need or by personal desire. When I was a resident over 20 yrs ago, it was mainframes, and Anatomic Pathology was essentially univolved in informatics. Unfortuneately, Anatomic Pathologists largely are decades behind in informatics, which will become a major detriment in the coming Molecular age. This should be required reading for all residents in pathology and most Anatomic Pathologists. Informatics is here to stay...and if you do not start paying attention you will be left in the dust. I applaude Dr. Cowan and hope others begin to publish other works in this area, particularly related to Anatomic Pathology.

Excellent Book; A triumph

This book is an excellent resource or companion compendium for those who seek to become fluent or proficient in the corpus of knowledge that this tome represents. With the paucity or dearth of pathology informatics textbooks the authors bring a fresh and innovative perspective on the state of the art whilst covering the area with great detail. This book is a must read and should be on the shelf of any self respecting pathology informatician. This interesting read shall remain dust free with dog eared and well worn pages. Lastly, it should suffice to say that Cowan et al. have captured the true essence of the technology, and those who involve themselves with such endeavors will likely flock to this volume instinctually, like the salmon of CAPistrano. My wholehearted congratulations to Dr. Dan Cowan for help putting the field of pathology informatics on the map.

On the elimination of everything but the essentials
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2006-04-07
When DSN was visiting Stanford's Department of Management Science and Engineering[...] in the late 90s, it was called "Engineering-Economic Systems and Operations Research". A change for the better, no? One thing that hasn't changed is the excellence of the people there.

We just got our copy David Luenberger's new Information Science[...]. Not only is it a handsome book, big but not heavy with cottony paper, it's like an entire college education on a field you never knew existed, looking at everything from file compression to marketing to microeconomics through one beautiful framework set forth of by Claude Shannon in 1949. It includes a nice Shannon quote, from 1953:

The first [method] I might speak about is simplification. Suppose that you are given a problem to solve, I don't care what kind of problem-a machine to design, or a physical theory to develop, or a mathematical theorem to prove or something of that kind-probably a very powerful approach to this is to attempt to eliminate everything from the problem except the essentials; that is, cut is down to size. Almost every problem that you come across is befuddled with all kinds of extraneous data of one sort or another; and if you can bring this problem down into the main issues, you can see more clearly what you are trying to do an perhaps find a solution. Now in so doing you may have stripped away the problem you're after. You may have simplified it to the point that it doesn't even resemble the problem that you started with; but very often if you can solve this simple problem, you can add refinements to the solution of this until you get back to the solution of the one you started with.

Luenberger comments "Shannon's approach of abstraction to an essence should become clear as we study his contributions throughout this text. His work is a testament to the power of the method."

Sizzling Title for Readers in Science & Engineering, Business & Economics, Statistics & Finance.

Information Science, a highly interdisciplinary work, delivers a beautiful and unifying structure of the subject in a timely manner. Audience from any academic discipline in science and engineering, business and economics, and statistics and finance will be able to obtain additional insight from yet another perspective--the missing piece in your jigsaw puzzle. With entertaining historical anecdotes and enlightening modern examples, Stanford Professor David G. Luenberger builds his book around the five 'E's' of information: Entropy, Economics, Encryption, Extraction, and Emission. Each area directly underpins, drives, or builds modern information products, services, and technology--from compressed music/photo to digital cash, pricing economics to bundled marketing, database systems to communication networks. Featured by the author's lucid and precise writing style, the presentation is logical, coherent and pedagogically sound! Professor Luenberger's Information Science most successfully embraces many varying and disperse (yet extremely important) concepts and structures in (but not limited to) e-Business models and IT innovations into Science and Management. It's a must-read for any student and scholar who are ready to compete and thrive in the today's information era.

As an RF engineer, involved in Wireless Network Design and Implementation, I found this book the most resourceful in my personal library. It is a perfect blend of all Wireless Technologies, Cellular, Wireless and also IP. What I appreciated most was that the book covered all my needs. If you need to know antenna theory and digital modulation techniques, on top of Wireless technologies, you need not spend time and money on other texts. The contents of this book will no doubt be helpful to everyone, from graduates and engineers to academics. I personally congratulate the authors for the great job!

Great introduction
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-16
I have read lots of introductory and advanced dsp books. In my opinion this book is the best book when it comes to learning fundamentals. This was the book along with the book i'll mention later which allowed me to read and understand more advanced books. Explanations are clear and supported with lots of figures and worked examples. Even though software examples provided on it's disk is very primitive and dated, they are still very helpful for beginners. (Source codes available and perfect for validating your understanding about formulas and calculations) I strongly recommend it. Understanding Digital Signal Processing (2nd Edition) by Richard G. Lyons is also great. If possible buy both otherwise buy this one.

Unique Reference
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2003-01-07
It is a very well organized textbook. Authors first explain reasons (economic and technical) for IP-3G convergence. Major conceptual differences between IP and mobile communications, on standardization processes, network approaches, connectivity, design approaches are compared in order to highlight difficulties for such a converged solution. Then three major issues are examined in details: session management & SIP protocol, QoS and Mobility Management (macro and micro). Last, authors discuss what is next: All-IP 3G and beyond.
This is an excellent book about the subject, for its coverage, simplicity and appropriate references and 'further readings' lists given at the end of each chapter.

A Must for 3G and UMTS readers.

Review Date: 2002-12-03
Primary focus of this book is protocols for 3G/UMTS networks. This book covers 3G concepts in some detail but pays attention mostly on network side and protocols. Which makes this book a must to have together with Kaaranen's and/or Korhonen's book. Contents is light in maths and easy to read. Very good diagrams and plain English. A concise and easy to access content makes this book very useful. Read at once and get the idea how it works. Warmly recommended.
