Excellent Microwave Engineering Book

This book provides an excellent overview of microwave engineering within the industry. It is well written and laid out in an introduction to deployment fashion. Excellent discussion on link budget development and a thorough view of availability versus reliability within the microwave path. I like how the author introduces you to the basic fundamentals of microwave networks and then moves into planning, design, and deployment. If you design or work with microwave radios, this book should be on your shelf as a right hand tool. The book has been an excellent reference to me for developing software and microwave link budgets. Great job!

I had to purchase this book for a course being given by the author. I have been in the industry for over 20 years and I have never had so much information packed into one reference book, ever. This book is extremely easy to read and it gives you a very comprehensive understanding of all the terms, formula's, and theories associated with MW Engineering. Do yourself a favor, buy the book, take the one of the authors seminars. Your career will be positively affected.

This book presents an excellent collection of papers describing various forms of mobility. It would be useful for a wide variety of technical professionals. This would also be an invaluable resource for students and researchers who plan to work in this increasingly important area. The unique feature of this book is the width of its coverage. It covers all the important papers I can think of.

Three features make this book competitive

1) The three areas covered - although they have similar problems with similar solutions - are rarely presented together. 2) The editors have selected a nice cross-section of papers from the three areas, and 3) The editors make some key points about and draw some key parallels between the three areas in the introductions and summaries.

An outstanding collection!

This book is an excellent collection of research papers on mobility, and it serves as a good introduction on the topic as well as a reference for new work. It stands out for three reasons: (1) Its breadth - it covers all important aspects of mobility in a single volume. (2) Its depth - it pulls together papers from many different sources, including major conferences, but also hard-to-find, yet ground-breaking papers. (3) Its commentary - both by the authors and by the individual researchers (in the form of afterwords).

I have found this book to be extremely helpful in getting throuh my Network+ certification. This book was actually recomended to me by my instructor who's a MCSE+I and also a MCSD. I found in this book some material which i didn't find in the three other books that i own. It gives you a practical prespective of networking and it's very different from other books which stick to the theoretical jargons. It is a must for you if you are planning to appear in your Network+ certification exam...... Two thumbs up!

The best networking book I ever read

I am 48 yo and I am studying IT to re-qualify myself to find a new job.
Years ago I studied networks basics but I really didn't grasp the subject.

Now I read this book and I found clear explanations that led me to better understanding what's going on in LANs and WANs.

There are only two chapters that I found hard to follow, because they are heavily focused on the IEEE specifications (that sure are important but also very complex and full of confusing achronyms), but that apart, now I can say that my knowledge about LANs, NICs, MAC, LLC, Hub, Switches, Routers, ecc.. ecc.. is really clear.

It's well written and very useful if you works in IT fields or even if you are curious to understand the fundamentals of networking, that is a very complex subject.

When I first saw the title of this book, I thought is sounded too simple. Not sure that I wanted a "basic" book on my professional bookshelf. Maybe "essentials" or "principles" would have been better. But, I took a look at it. When I saw the section on hexadecimal I thought that, again, it might be simple a book. But, it wasn't.

Yes, it covers the fundamentals, but that's what it is for. I would recommend watching the interactive lessons, first. You get a quick dose of information, some of which you might already know. That will probably help speed up the browsing process.

For the intro level material, I'll probably still keep it on my bookshelf at work.

The Standard Text for the Cisco Course
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2006-04-11
This book is a general introduction to networking the Cisco way. It is used as a textbook by many of the training academies that are preparing students for the Cisco CCNA exam. It is also recommended by most of those that don't absolutely require it as an additional source of study and practice materials.

This is the first book in the series and begins with 'What's a Network.' From there it goes step by step to the last chapter which is on TCP/IP Transport and Application Layers. The book is written like a text, and when the course of study is finished it should be kept as a reference book. It also contains numerous questions as a way to check your understanding of the material and your readiness to pass the certification exam.

The CD-ROM that is included with the book contains additional information, interactive media that visually demonstrate key topics, and other learning tools.

A "Must Have" Addition to Any Network Analysis Library
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-09-13
This book is exactly what I was looking for concerning troubleshooting TCP/IP with a network analyzer. This book starts with the level 1 troubleshooting and goes from there. The book not only covers general TCP/IP issues, but also thuroughly covers vendor implementations, including Novell, Microsoft and Unix specific issues.

I've had the book only three days, and have already used it to solve a couple of network analysis problems. The content is most useful.

The book is well thought out, and well organized. I particularly appreciate the packet by packet explanations and real world troubleshooting examples. The extensive appendixes are a wonderful addition.

If you could only buy one book for TCP/IP network analysis, I'd get this one.

Just as Zahid was, I was impressed within 10 minutes while in the bookstore. (I bought the book while in the bookstore)

First, forget any thoughts about a Novell/Netware focus, this is a book about TCP/IP, and it includes some chapters about Microsoft's and Novell's implementations of TCP/IP. Excellent.

The book does an outstanding job of covering the subject at the intermediate to advanced level. It is not for newbies, and it is not for geeks. IMO, "serious" students/end users/LAN administrators will find it very useful.

It took me only 10 minutes of thumbing through the book in the shop before I decided to buy it. I have just read it cover-to-cover and can categorically state that it covers its subject matter superbly. Although it is a hefty 1000-page tome, the text is lucid and written in a no-nonsense style. It gets right down to business with numerous (and accurate) tables, diagrams and screen shots. This book will teach you everything you need to know about troubleshooting TCP/IP. If you are thinking of buying such a book, you can't go wrong with this one. Congratulations to the authors and Novell Press.

If you want to understand DSL

If you want to understand how DSL works and how to shop for a DSL provider, this is THE book to get. The authors do an excellent job of explaining DSL quickly and clearly. This is NOT one of those books written by a computer geek who understands the subject but doesn't understand how to explain it to others. After reading this book I understand how DSL works, and I was able to purchase DSL service to host a server for my business. For those who want to understand DSL but do not need to know ALL the technical details, this is the book to get.

I work for a small law firm and I've been trying to convince the partners to install a DSL line (30 employees were sharing 4 analog lines for Internet service). After purchasing and reading this book I was able to cobble together a proposal (with judicious sections of the book attached) that convinced management to purchase DSL. Although I'm not a computer network professional (I'm a paralegal) I was able to install and set up sharing of the DSL service without calling in the expensive network consultant we normally use. The book made installation and sharing very easy.

Thanks to this book the personnel in my office can now get on and off the Internet any time they wish.

The author explained DSL, its advantages and disadvantages so clearly that even our most computer phobic partner had no trouble understanding what I was talking about.

I've been wrestling with DSL, Cable, Satellite, Wireless for many months. I wanted a high speed connection for my home but found digging through the confusing technology impossible. Then I found and read Ms. Reynolds book. She does a fantastic job of explaining DSL, what it is, how to get it, why you can't get it, etc. I am no longer confused. Thank you Ms. Reynolds!

The first time I heard about Satan it was when I started my quest into Linux tools. I found Satan " the fixed release for Linux" I tried it !!! but never do things at 100%. When I read the Book....suddenly all changed..I have discovered the hidden side of Sys Adminz. I stopped hacking and now I'm working on the right direction. I'm on my way to code " LUCIFER" a Satan-Like software.

I read the text file and used the SATAN version 1.1. This really interested me. I never expected a book such as above and I was only surfing the Web with Amazon.com when I came in contact with this book. I thought of giving it a try. This book is just incredible and explain SATAN in more detail. I am a System Admin and I know what are my problems, this book really opened my eyes. AN EXCELLENT EFFORT!

What I like about this book is that it is not your usual 500 pages tome, but a readable, very focused view on SATAN (and probably helpful for SAINT too). I especially liked that it also points out what SATAN does *not* do, and what to do and where to go for more information on network security in general. Recommended.

The most complete reference on ATM QoS theory I've seen.

Reference notation is excellent - Giroux and Ganti do a great job of documenting their sources, which was extremely helpful in cross referencing. If this book doesn't answer your question, it'll point you in the right direction.

Pretty technical reading, but that's what I was looking for when I bought it.

This is a must for technical reference in ATM. To understand ATM, I started by reading this book. Then, I read the ATM traffic management specification in ATM Forum and quite a number of ATM-related papers. However, I still find the book very useful from time to time. It gives summary of different techniques presented in different papers (eg. schedulling mechanism in Chapter 5), and also overview of different parts of traffic management (at the start of each chapter). For beginners, some sections will be quite difficult, because it did get into the details. You just skip it, I think the rest still able to help you understand the traffic management of ATM. I really love this book. :)

Any criticisms you have encountered about this book being biased towards prepress are true. But if you are involved with PDF in prepress, this book is very good.

This book will take you from beginner (but not novice) to advanced intermediate. It won't take you to expert; but then expert comes with experience. Given that each prepress environment has its own peculiarities, you'll have to work within your system to take it to its limits. This book can help some of the way.

My only complaint is related to my personal situation. On occasions, concerning some particularly fine points, the book suggests "ask your prepress partner". I am trying to become that prepress person, so I found this frustrating. Understandable, but frustrating.

I Concur... This book has a wealth of useful information

I needed something more comprehensive and revealing than the usual offering of beginners texts. Yet, I WAS a beginner.

This book not only covers the general abilities of Acrobat, it discuses little known intricacies and technical issues that will make you a power user in record time.

Remarkably, the information is explained in simple, ordinary language.

I started working for a medium sized ad agency 2 years ago. Every document we produce has to be made in to PDF format for review by our clients. I could make a PDF, but really had no true understanding of the settings and what I was really doing. This book is truly excellent at giving a novice a complete understanding of the PDF format. For someone already knowlegeable about the PDF format it is also a very valuable reference. This is one of the most useful computer books I have bought in years and I buy alot of them. When our tech-guy has problems with Acrobat he comes to me and borrows this book.

The best thing about the book is that it breaks down PDF creation by program. For example, if you use Quark Xpress there is a chapter dedicated on how to use Acrobat with Quark. If you use Microsoft Word there is another chapter on using Acrobat with it. These chapters present you with real world scenarios and how to deal with them.

This is not some kind of quick start guide. It does get in to some detail and that helped me a great deal. It doesn't just gloss-over a subject or give you bare-bones steps on how to do something.

This is an easy to understand book that will help out anbody at any level with using Acrobat. I can't say enough good things about it. This is the first book I have purchased in the "Real World" series of books... it won't be my last!
