Thanks to Joan Bannan for authoring a book a student can understand!!
I am a registered nurse, currently working on a master's degree in Administrative Studies. I have cited this book extensively in my professional report--a paper outlining utilization of coursework in the workplace. My report involves streamlining the policy and procedure system in a small hospital. This book has been invaluable in developing a project proposal to enhance workplace communication.

Wanted to say how much I enjoyed reading Intranet Document Management. I am a novice Intranet/Extranet Developer (worked on 2 projects to completion), and found this book to be the best computer-related book I own. Joan Bannan does not bombard the reader with techno-babble; computer terms and concepts are explained with clarity, providing a guide to managing Intranet documents for novices and experienced professionals alike who may desire a written frame of reference to guide them in their own projects.
The result is a book with with well-thought-out organization and excellent readability.

The authors of this well balanced textbook succeed admirably well in teaching the subject to the union of students in math and in cs, and to engineers. The danger with subjects that cut accross fields is that they might appeal to the intersection of audiences involved rather than to the much larger union. The authors seem to be at home with all the types of readers, they realize that the lingo and the aim is different for the different and diverse groups of students. Indeed, the tools of information theory, data compression, and arithmetic coding are widely used in science. While the mathematical parts of the subject is old[Shannon, Kolmogorov..., measurements of information, entropy, channel capacity], the applications are still going strong, with new things coming out at a fast rate right up to the present. So the emphasis in the book on data and image compression is very appropriate. There is even a JPEGtool user's guide in the appendix.

I am a gradute student in computer science and I have read a lot of books on this subject, including 1- Digital Image Compression, by Weidong Kou, 2- The Data Compression Book, by Mark Nelson, 3- JPEG Still Image Data Compression Standard, by Pennebaker. I have also browsed few other books on this subject, but one thing I can say for sure, that this is the best book ever written on the subject of Compression. It explains the information theory and data Compression in the best possible way, with best examples. Once read, you will never forget the algorithms. I just love this book, and read it every once in a while.

Very good book for those wanting to improve their people skills. Yes, technical skills are important, but people/communication skills are equally, if not more important. I read an interesting newsclip a while back, claiming almost 2/3 of hiring managers would rather have someone with good soft skills and somewhat weaker technical skills than the other way around. Why? Technical skills are usually easier to teach.
The book features good scenarios on dealing with different types of co-workers, managers, customers as well as harassment and politics. Strongly recommended regardless of career choice.

I have perused and read more than my fair share of A+ and other certification guides and none of them have given any thing more than lip-service to what is arguably the most important aspect of any service related profession: human relations. The "IT Professional's Business and Communications Guide" tackles this topic and its specific IT complexities head on.
After a quick review, I found the information presented in an interesting and extremely readable fashion. The situational problems presented within aren''t just common-sense scenarios but interesting tactics to use in negotiating with the customer, the manager, or your fellow IT professional.

Few things matter more when it comes to getting ahead in life in general--and the workplace in particular--than politics and perception. Navigating the sometimes murky morass of office politics has been a struggle for me, and I believe, many other IT professionals. This book has helped me immensely in this area.
Even if your problem area isn't in office politics, "The IT Professional's Business and Communications Guide" is a priceless "how-to" for everything ranging from dealing with rude customers to tactfully handling the angry person on the other end of the helpdesk line. My favorite chapter was the one which gives simple but priceless tips on grasping and effectively using IT team leadership.
Let's face it, most of us are geeks. It's a term that many of us bear with pride. Unfortunately, as geeks, we often haven't placed as much emphasis on social networking as we have on Cisco networking.
This book helps, a lot.

Although I got this book at the beginning of this month, I benefit from this book very well.
From simple point of networking to complex topologies, each point is clearly explained. That is, it is designed to welcome most of the needs of an ISP.
I thing each network engineer holds this book under his/her hand.

This i believe is one of the best Juniper reference books i have come across. I have read and used within my job the complete reference by Matt Kolon and Jeff Doyle, aswell as other books. However this reference guide seems to cover the essential aspects of the more upto date Junos versions.
This is an excellent book that is well presented and easy to read, which has to be the killing point, i found the book written as if i where actually speaking to some of the people i know at Juniper through my company.
I passed my JNCIS by this book, I am recommending this book to all my friends who are scattered across various ISP's in the european region that have also implemented Juniper at the amsterdam internet exchange, london internet exchange etc across europe..

Many tech books put you to sleep within a few pages, but not this one. This book is extremely readable. The authors have a very engaging writing style, and the talent for teaching shines through. This book presents difficult concepts in an easy-to-understand way, and throws in enough humor to make sure you were really paying attention. This book is a valuable every-day reference guide, as well as a roadmap for learning JUNOS and going on to tackle the JNCIE exam.
I had the pleasure of attending a course given by Doug Marschke, and I can say his classes were every bit as wonderful as the book. Doug knows this material inside and out, and he has the teaching skills to be able to share his immense knowledge.

This guy should win a award for his wit and apparent knowledge exhibited in each chapter. This book helped me TREMENDOUSLY. Well written and easy to understand...AND kept my attention. They put quizzes at the end of each chapter to make sure you 'got it'. This book is a definate must if you use Juniper.
I'd pay money to hear this guy teach a class on this!

This book provides an excellent overview of microwave engineering within the industry. It is well written and laid out in an introduction to deployment fashion. Excellent discussion on link budget development and a thorough view of availability versus reliability within the microwave path. I like how the author introduces you to the basic fundamentals of microwave networks and then moves into planning, design, and deployment. If you design or work with microwave radios, this book should be on your shelf as a right hand tool. The book has been an excellent reference to me for developing software and microwave link budgets. Great job!

This book is extremely easy to read and it gives you a very comprehensive understanding of all the terms, formula's, and theories associated with MW Engineering. Do yourself a favor, buy the book, take the one of the authors seminars. Your career will be positively affected.

This book presents an excellent collection of papers describing various forms of mobility. It would be useful for a wide variety of technical professionals. This would also be an invaluable resource for students and researchers who plan to work in this increasingly important area. The unique feature of this book is the width of its coverage. It covers all the important papers I can think of.

1) The three areas covered - although they have similar problems with similar solutions - are rarely presented together. 2) The editors have selected a nice cross-section of papers from the three areas, and 3) The editors make some key points about and draw some key parallels between the three areas in the introductions and summaries.
An outstanding collection!

This book is an excellent collection of research papers on mobility, and it serves as a good introduction on the topic as well as a reference for new work. It stands out for three reasons: (1) Its breadth - it covers all important aspects of mobility in a single volume. (2) Its depth - it pulls together papers from many different sources, including major conferences, but also hard-to-find, yet ground-breaking papers. (3) Its commentary - both by the authors and by the individual researchers (in the form of afterwords).

It gives you a practical prespective of networking and it's very different from other books which stick to the theoretical jargons. I am 48 yo and I am studying IT to re-qualify myself to find a new job.
Years ago I studied networks basics but I really didn't grasp the subject.
Now I read this book and I found clear explanations that led me to better understanding what's going on in LANs and WANs.
There are only two chapters that I found hard to follow, because they are heavily focused on the IEEE specifications (that sure are important but also very complex and full of confusing achronyms), but that apart, now I can say that my knowledge about LANs, NICs, MAC, LLC, Hub, Switches, Routers, ecc.. ecc.. is really clear.
It's well written and very useful if you works in IT fields or even if you are curious to understand the fundamentals of networking, that is a very complex subject.

When I first saw the title of this book, I thought is sounded too simple. Not sure that I wanted a "basic" book on my professional bookshelf. Maybe "essentials" or "principles" would have been better. But, I took a look at it. When I saw the section on hexadecimal I thought that, again, it might be simple a book. But, it wasn't.
Yes, it covers the fundamentals, but that's what it is for. I would recommend watching the interactive lessons, first. You get a quick dose of information, some of which you might already know. That will probably help speed up the browsing process.
For the intro level material, I'll probably still keep it on my bookshelf at work.

This book is a general introduction to networking the Cisco way. It is used as a textbook by many of the training academies that are preparing students for the Cisco CCNA exam. It is also recommended by most of those that don't absolutely require it as an additional source of study and practice materials.
This is the first book in the series and begins with 'What's a Network.' From there it goes step by step to the last chapter which is on TCP/IP Transport and Application Layers. The book is written like a text, and when the course of study is finished it should be kept as a reference book. It also contains numerous questions as a way to check your understanding of the material and your readiness to pass the certification exam.
The CD-ROM that is included with the book contains additional information, interactive media that visually demonstrate key topics, and other learning tools.
