I have had that book for now fifteen years, and I am still using it as a reference. Expensive but useful buy, particularly for filter design.

I have owned this book for nearly 10 years now, and I am still amazed out how relevant it is and what a pleasure it is to read. The authors are leaders in their field, such as Harris, Cadzow, SilVia, Elliot etc. There are also short programmes that can many times help to clarify implementation of the algorithsm....fantastic.

Give this book 6 stars!!!!!!!!!!!

The Competent Implementors Reference

This text is one I would recommend to anyone with serious aspirations to a professional career in the business of datacommunications networking.

Kenyon has presentated a complex discipline with no sugar coated spin, yet the material is accessible through the illustrations that quantify what are 'reasonable outcomes' in several useful scenarios. This last skill belongs to proven and experienced practitioners, Kenyon has evidently 'walked the walk' and provides the reader with the benefit of his knowledge and experience.

At the very least this text is an essential reference text for modern practitioners of Data Network construction and planning.
- Concept, Implementation, Budget and Risk Management.

At the most enjoyable points, this text provides a way of taking a technologist or student to their respective technical depths, without losing focus on the need to yield practical and cost effective implementations.

The bar has been set to other authors in this area, I hope that Mr Kenyon has more material to come.

THE NETWORK DESIGN BIBLE!!!

I've read many network books, but this one really is beyond anything I've seen so far. This author, unlike others, has got it right, this is a book for engineers, a book written with so much detail it will blow your mind off. I especially loved two of its chapters: Chapter two which is on capacity planning and Chapter four which is on Network Cost Analysis, the two most important aspects that that will turn a network design into a real network.

This book is definitely worth every penny.

Finally a design book written for engineers

I own plenty of design books, unfortunately most of them just rehash design standards or design methods. I've waited a long time for a book that is written from an engineers viewpoint covering material that is relevant to my job and my interests.

My first impressions were great narrative and an exellent technical resource covering difficult and complex aspects such as capacity planning and performance. However, my particular area and what really drew me to this book was network costing and backbone design something that is usually under-represented.

The WAN and ATM sections are extremely well put together with some great insights. Overall, it is methodical, dense in some places definately challenging for the uninitiated but always accompanied with well thought out examples making it very readable, something that I thought made a great change from the norm.

Method is covered, but thankfully only where necessary and anyone like me who is involved in design will benefit from the design templates that are provided.

Overall, I'm extremely impressed and definately looking forward to the accompanying book on higher level security and routing. If it is as well written as this then, for engineers, it should be THE benchmark book set for anyone who is involved in network design. Top marks.

This book went step by step from knowing nothing about writing a web page to making a quite complete up-to-date one. And all from scratch, needing only a text editor such as notepad. Links to graphics, various plug-ins, and other helpful downloads are provided. Lots of clear, very helpful pictures are used. I could have had my first page up the next day if I had had a server available

Resently I got an assignment to build a web page but I had absolutely no experience. Fortunately, I had picked this book up intending some day to read it. Using HTML3 as my only source of reference, I was able to build a multi-paged web site with over 400 links world-wide. If it hadn't been for this book, I'd still be scratching my head and wondering how to start.

I'm a Polytechnic professor teaching Information theory, Coding, Cryptography and related subjects. I have been looking for books which are not very much theoretical and can be used in practice, covering as much of the field (in this case Cryptography) as possible. Reading The Guide I belive I've found the rigt hit. It covers practically all the momentary interested fields of Cryptography and still very well balanced. it is especially useful as textbook in Universities and Technical Colleges, Military and S.service academics in the field of Cryptography. I wish it being translated to my mother language, which is Hungarian.

When I was a kid I had a slide encrypter and a Captain Midnight decoder. Later when I started with UNIX I was playing with encrypt and decrypt. Some one came up with PGP (pretty good privacy) and other encryption stuff. Then there are the movies about Enigma. All this is fine but how does it work? What practical use is it? Where do I start?

Start here with ICSA Guide to Cryptography. Contents:

Introduction

First Principles and Overview

Historical Systems

Codes and Machines

Data Encryption Standard (DSE) and Information Theory

Public-Key (Asymmetric) Cryptography

Algorithms

Implementation Mistakes

ICSA Product Certification

Internet Cryptography

Security: Policy, Privacy, and Protocols

Smartcards

IP Security and Secure Virtual Private Networks

Cryptography in Electronic Commerce Systems

Role-Based Cryptography

Cryptanalysis and System Identification

Biometric Encryption

There is much more information that can not all be mentioned on this review. And do not forget there is a CD included with more up to date information.

Let's face it: unless you have a background in mathematics that facilitates an understanding of equations and the like, cryptography can be pretty rough going. But this book, fortunately, is not for mathmaticians; instead, those who are interested in understanding the basics of cryptography in 532 well-written and relatively understandable pages will be pleased with this introductory book. With the HIPAA (Kennedy Kastenbaum) law's so-called administrative simplification provisions and the pending security regulations for health plans, providers and others being debated, cryptography including encryption technology is going to be a part of health care delivery and it is already important to electronic commerce. This book will be required reading for anyone who must understand what is going on cryptographically and how it all works. From the perspective of a health information and technology lawyer, this book was a worthwhile addition to my library.

When I read the course description for the information privacy law class offered at my law school, I immediately signed up. This book was the text used.

As a general rule, reading a 700+ page legal book from cover to cover in a condensed summer session is about as pleasant as getting a root canal. This text is one of the rare exceptions to that rule. Chock full of fascinating cases, explanations and statutes, this book was a joy to study. The cases are all either amusing, interesting or instructive on the intricacies of the law.

What makes this area of the law so interesting is that it combines tort law with criminal law and privacy considerations. Whether you want to learn about healthcare privacy, wiretaps, the Patriot Act, telephone privacy or computer privacy, this book is likely to address it. In sum, this book is one of the best legal texts I have encountered in law school and that is quite a compliment considering how confusing many legal books can be. This is a worthwhile read.

A Masterful Synthesis of the Field

Review Date: 2003-02-14
This book is a great introduction to the rapidly growing field of information privacy law. Although it is a casebook designed for classroom instruction, it also serves as a terrific reference tool for lawyers in the field, especially given the field's lack of reference books. The text has broad coverage, including privacy issues about the media, law enforcement, health and genetic data, computers, the Internet, email, anonymity, and the workplace. It also has a chapter on international privacy law. It covers the privacy torts, constitutional protections, FTC enforcement, federal statutes, HIPAA regulations, EU Data Protection Directive, and more. The book is tightly edited; and it provides copious background and explanatory notes. All of the major privacy statutes are explained thoroughly and clearly -- for this alone, the book is worth purchasing! The book is the best synthesis of the field I have yet encountered. If you deal with information privacy law issues, this book is an indispensable reference tool!

excellent introduction to email
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-02-12
This book does not focus exclusively on a single topic, but instead provides a well-rounded discussion on all things email-related. For example, it does not focus exclusively on any one messaging implementation, nor does it get bogged down on technical discussions of protocols and message boundaries, but instead it covers these topics (and more) as part of a comprehensive discussion on electronic mail in general.

Each chapter tackles a broad subject and then provides a studied discussion of several touchstone issues related to that discussion. For example, there is a chapter on sending email in an enterprise network which provides ample discussions on several subordinate topics, including an introduction to LDAP directories, a summary discussion on various gateways and integration services that are likely to be used in that kind of environment, and details for configuring popular messaging clients to take advantage of these services.

In this regard, Internet Messaging provides a well-rounded introductory discussion on the subject of Internet email at large, making it perhaps the best novice guide on the market. It is especially well-suited for people who are just stepping into messaging concepts, but advanced users and implementors will also find plenty of useful nuggets.

The primary use of the internet, and most people ignore it.

Thanks to Joan Bannan for authoring a book a student can understand!!

I am a registered nurse, currently working on a master's degree in Administrative Studies. I have cited this book extensively in my professional report--a paper outlining utilization of coursework in the workplace. My report involves streamlining the policy and procedure system in a small hospital. This book has been invaluable in developing a project proposal to enhance workplace communication.

Wanted to say how much I enjoyed reading Intranet Document Management. I am a novice Intranet/Extranet Developer (worked on 2 projects to completion), and found this book to be the best computer-related book I own. Joan Bannan does not bombard the reader with techno-babble; computer terms and concepts are explained with clarity, providing a guide to managing Intranet documents for novices and experienced professionals alike who may desire a written frame of reference to guide them in their own projects.

The result is a book with with well-thought-out organization and excellent readability.

Well balanced!

Review Date: 2003-01-31
The authors of this well balanced textbook succeed admirably well in teaching the subject to the union of students in math and in cs, and to engineers. The danger with subjects that cut accross fields is that they might appeal to the intersection of audiences involved rather than to the much larger union. The authors seem to be at home with all the types of readers, they realize that the lingo and the aim is different for the different and diverse groups of students. Indeed, the tools of information theory, data compression, and arithmetic coding are widely used in science. While the mathematical parts of the subject is old[Shannon, Kolmogorov..., measurements of information, entropy, channel capacity], the applications are still going strong, with new things coming out at a fast rate right up to the present. So the emphasis in the book on data and image compression is very appropriate. There is even a JPEGtool user's guide in the appendix.

I am a gradute student in computer science and I have read a lot of books on this subject, including 1- Digital Image Compression, by Weidong Kou, 2- The Data Compression Book, by Mark Nelson, 3- JPEG Still Image Data Compression Standard, by Pennebaker. I have also browsed few other books on this subject, but one thing I can say for sure, that this is the best book ever written on the subject of Compression. It explains the information theory and data Compression in the best possible way, with best examples. Once read, you will never forget the algorithms. I just love this book, and read it every once in a while.
