Great for those who don't need to learn "cut and paste"
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.

Many of these books start from the cut and past beginnings. This book assumes that the user has some knowlege of windows and doesn't waste time with the absolute basics. You can immediatly jump right in and start building your understanding of Excel.
The layout is easy to follow but it does have a tendancy to refer to terms that are covered in future chapters which can make things confusing until you cover that info later on. The section on functions and arrays also deals with many examples that should be more clearly explained, especially when dealing with mathematical terms and equations that may not be as familiar to some users!! A CD would have been nice to give the user a chance to go "hands-on" where most of the real learning takes place.
Overall I would recommend this book to those seeking a more comprehensive understanding of Excel. It's easy to read (which speaks volumes in this category!!) and keeps the user interested and plugging away instead of frustrated and putting the book away on a shelf collecting dust.

Still germane

Throughout the 1990s, IBM's version of unix, AIX, had some of the most advanced features of any commercial unix. For instance, its SMIT GUI let sysadmins easily handle many duties. The alternative could be a manual typing of what were often intricate command lines, with many arguments to the various commands. Needless to say, the book goes into explaining SMIT at some length. It was a vital part of AIX's attraction.

AIX also had the ability to have journalled file systems, and to dynamically increase the size of a partition without having to reboot the system. For several years, Solaris and HPUX required a reboot.

Of course, this book was written before IBM officially decided to throw its weight behind linux. Nowadays, IBM is in the process of merging AIX into linux. But the advice given in the book is still mostly germane.

One of the best formatted books on programming I've seen.
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 1997-01-29

What I liked: The book provides good references into the basics of building a web page. Each reference provides on the one page a "visual" example of what you are building, and on the opposite page a description of how to write the HTML for the example both in numbered steps and in text.

What to be wary of: Several examples leave out the closing of the HTML item being described. The one I discovered first was the "option" - "/option" used in creating forms. My web page editor very nicely added it (incorrectly) and it caused me some confusion to fix the problem. Be careful to close all items regardless of the examples.

Overall summary: The examples and "visual" set-up of the book far outweighs the minor, though sometime irritating errors.

This book is very good when one is refering to the Korn shell, but it does not have a didactic if one is starting wiht this programing's language. However, it is as a reference handbook for ksh and of course, it also has a nice tutorial.
