Unix Systems Books

Finally a book in real English that uses concrete words to explain computer concepts. Excellent material on MVS giving both CLEAR overview and detail. Excellent insight on connectivity problems/options and what vendors' products address which problems. If you like books that BUILD ON CONCRETE CONCEPTS and are arranged in an orderly, hierarchial fashion, this is the book.

Oh, did I mention the content is impecable? Old MVS guys? Gotta have this one.

To be brief: This book has answered every question I've had about the unix os. I'll admit that I'm not a very advanced user but I can navigate my way around fairly well. This book is handy for those 'middle of the road' users who are embarking on learning more than just the basics of unix. It has a very handy vi section as well as listing the switches for many common commands. If you use unix, you should probably have on of these on your shelf.

This book shouldn't be out of print! It gives lots of practical tips, such as: How to use ed, vi, or emacs; how to write scripts in sh, sed, perl or awk; how to handle email on UNIX; basics of programming.

Put together, it's a great lesson in the history and philosophy of UNIX. Work you way through the book, and you'll have a good grasp of the UNIX way. Then, you can still use the book as a mighty handy reference.

The book is only slightly dated in spots. For example, it doesn't cover anything to do with the World Wide Web, and it doesn't mention Linux. However, these are only minor omissions. It's still an excellent book!

This is an all around fantastic book for learning the tricks and methods of network file systems. It will introduce you to some very helpful tools for measuring performance and testing capabilities as well. Very little is HP-UX specific, as it deals mostly with the details of NFS and local file systems. I highly recommend this book if you are either charged with the administration of a large network file distribution system, or if you just want to learn all you can about getting the best out of your network(s) in regards to performance.

I recommend this book for both Perl novices and experts alike. It works well both as a reference for a specific problem as well as reading to brush up on available Perl techniques.

I use this book more than any of my other UNIX reference material. It presents syntax and options clearly for the most often used commands and utilities. Should be on every UNIX user's bookshelf.

Quite simply, an excellent book. It should be required reading for any Unix programmer. Not only are the tools insightful and powerful but the thought-processes, design decisions, and implementations are carefully discussed.
There is a lot to learn for everyone. Now if AT&T would just take the tools GPL/LGPL for everyone to enjoy...

I cracked the book to start reading and you are immediately shoved into programming an xping program. I had to stop and learn the parts of C that I am not as familier with. If you are looking for a great book to get you started on writing sec tools, then this is it!
