This was my first C book and I think it is still one of the best books around. The book can be tailored for different needs, from an introductory course in C, to a more advanced one that covers concepts like data encapsulation, Unix system facilities and multiprogramming.

It is NOT a dummy's book, and requires some sophistication from the user, although no previous knowledge. On the other hand, it is well-written, concise (you won't need to read through 20 pages of irrelevant stuff for the author finally converge on the relevant concept), correct and complete.

I highly recommend it.

IT Service Vision Software: Macro Reference, Release 2.3

Complete, comprehensive concordance of macros
Helpful Votes: 17 out of 17 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-29
This 570 page book is a concordance of IT Resource Management (formerly called IT Service Vision) macros, and a compendium of additional information, including batch job troubleshooting, error messages and data archiving.

Each of the macros are described in detail, and the macros are grouped by function (administration, reports, and data dictionary and control).

The audience for this book is limited to systems programmers who will be developing and implementing IT Resource Management solutions in the data warehouse, and assumes the use of SAS products in the environment. If you are seeking a more basic book that introduces IT Resource Manager you will want to read "Getting Started With It Service Vision: Release 2" (ISBN 1580259146), which is less technical and will provide a better overview of features and how to use them at the user and data warehouse administrator levels.

Probably the best Kylix book currently out

If you are at all interested in using Kylix then this is my recommended book for you. It's not really for the beginning programmer but if you have a little development skill and want to do some Linux development then this is the book for you. In case you don't know Kylix is Delphi for Linux (Pascal) but I've heard they are adding C++ as a syntax in the next release.

The layout of the book was new to me in part because it's the first tech book from Wordware that I have read. It seems to flow correctly and I didn't notice any major editing issues. All the examples I tried worked and where laid out in a manner that was easy to understand.

Of special interest to me was the chapter on porting code back and forth between Windows and Linux. But one thing that did surprise me was the coverage on specific Linux development like IPC's, Semaphores & Debugging Shared Object Libraries.

It's also kind of handy having the Kylix Open edition on the included CD, saved me from a large download.

The only major negative from the book is that the tone of the writing does change from chapter to chapter, due to obvious tag team writing by the different books authors.

I've been thinking about deploying LDAP in the Solaris Environment and last year I bought a previous version of this book (ASIN: 0130306789 ), but it was really a disappointing experience. The book was telling mostly about what LDAP is, but not much about how to use it in Solaris.

The new version is great. It tells you what you can use LDAP for, how to plan, deploy and support services. It also covers recent version of Sun Directory Server (5.2) and 2 the most popular versions of Solaris (8 and 9).

Highly highly recommended.

A must read for all MIS professionals

This book is exceptional because it outlines very clearly the history of computing to date highlighting the good and bad decisions made by IT managers along the way. The authors then provide a blueprint for the future with the hp3000 system as the backbone in an open systems arena. If you are a hp3000 user this will reaffirm what you already knew about this marvelous computer and answer the questions of how to effectively use this machine in the future. If you are not familiar with the hp3000 you will definitely have an appreciation after this read. HP should summarize this material for promotion to get the word out.

Excellent reference material in Unix work enviornment

I have been working in unix environment for last 8 years and this is an excellent reference for unix development and user environment. At my work my colleagues ask me about unix commands and tricks and of course I learned most of them by explaining it to them. "LINUX Programming Tools" covers what I need at work.

This book covers wide range, from C library functions, unix commands, debugger, make utility tricks, CVS and also your unix environment ( ENV ) i.e your shell explanation.

I would say, for beginner to intermediate user this book is a must and for advanced user this books is good reference source.

This is a great book for the Linux newbie. Everyone who sets up a Linux box is a defacto admin, so this book is for all newcomers. Does not go into great detail but touches many subjects. Easy to read and just enough info to get you going and to answer your questions. You will need other books to become an expert, but this is the best new user book I have seen for Linux.
