Good Introduction, Broad Topic Coverage
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-05
As someone relatively new to the telephony field, this book was a good introduction to a variety of topics. Since it is based on a managerial point-of-view, the topics are not highly detailed or technical, but contain enough information to understand what the various components are, and how they interact. This is not the only book that I would buy to understand issues in telephony, but served as a good general-purpose introduction. A valuable book to those new to telephony concepts. Also contains many real-world case studies, enhancing its value to those in a managerial role seeking to utilize or understand this technology.

A good overview of Unix tools

Review Date: 1997-03-13
While I personally would have liked additional examples, showing more of the options for each of the tools discussed, I did walk away from this book with a good sense of what can be done with the various tools covered and which tools are the most appropriate for a given need.

This is another one of those white books from O'Reilly about UNIX. I can't seem to get anywhere with it. Does explain command line UNIX and UNIX architecture. I guess there are so many areas one can be a guru in that not all of us have the time to be UNIX gurus. From what I hear too the work environment at computer corporations is very alientating for UNIX gurus.

Excellent reference for the casual UNIX shell programmer
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.

This little (152-page) book takes the mystery out of Bourne and Korn shell programming. It treats topics like logical operators, arithmetic, programming constructs (if, for, while, etc.) giving numerous, concise examples. Applications for standard commands are presented including a large vi reference section. I particularly like the explanation of the "exec" command - easy to understand yet thorough, like the entire book. I don't do enough UNIX scripts to warrant wading through a huge reference book and I suspect there are many others like myself. If you are a competent programmer in two or more languages, this book should be enough to get you on your way doing shell programming.

Classic Unix Book

A good book to cover the basics and intermediate stuff about being a Unix admin. It covers adding users to the system, backingup and restoring, security, X-Windows, printer queues, keeping your eye on disk space and job management. It gets into some Kernal tweaking, startup/shutdown scripts (for AIX, System V, BSD), diskless booting, and entire chapter on the file system, backup and restores, users admin, sendmail, terminals, system auditing and tuning.

I read this book and i thought it gave a very good explaination of how unix/linux variants work. The language that it used to explain technical things was very well done using lots of lay man's terms. I think that overall this book was really good and the CD that it came with was jam packed with lots of goodies!

A unix user's guide reviewed by a Linux newbie
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-04-19
I actually found a newsprint copy of this book rotting off the shelves in a bookstore here in the Philippines. The book is quite old, its pages yellowed, and when I skimmed its first few pages, I had second thoughts whether I should buy this book or not. For one, it looked quite text heavy and I felt it was too technical and a dull read. But for lack of a Linux manual and, since the book is quite cheap, I bought it anyway. I wasn't disappointed at all.

Unix SVR4 User's Guide is actually an easy read, so don't be misled by its boring cover. Upon seeing the AT&T logo, I said: "boring book, probably written by scientists (no offense)." Boy was I wrong. This is a well-written user's guide, a useful instruction manual for people with zero Unix knowledge. But I think Linux newbies like me will also appreciate this book. It includes an overview of the Unix file system, a tutorial on ed, vi, shell programming and awk; quite useful if you're new to the Unix environment like me. But for Unix gurus, don't waste your money. There are better books out there and this is not an O'Reilly. In fact, most of the stuff written in this book is online, more in-depth at that, anyway. Sure, they're doing one hell of a job at LDP but nothing beats reading ink on pulp. Plus, this book is a real bargain, at least in this part of the world. It cost me roughly ...

So if you're still struggling to learn Unix or Linux, this is a good starting point. The book was first published almost two decades ago but the material it covers is still significant. This is not a Linux manual, obviously, but still is a good reference material. So don't expect a Linux-How-To, a Gnome tutorial or chapters on XFree86 or PPP configuration. Go to ... instead. As I've said, the book is not for Unix gurus. But I think Linux newbies like me will appreciate this book more.

Pretty well defined, covers most aspects of UNIX, and handles the challenges of assimilating all the little its and bits of UNIX very well. Everything considered, it was still not that good to be priced so much.
