Finding this book was quite a pleasant surprise. It's one of the only collections out there for Unix admins who want to have fun with their workstations.

The book consists of detailed instructions on how to play:

Canfield, Chess, Colossal Cave Adventure, Flight Simulator, Go, Hearts, Klondike, Mahjongg, Reversi, and Spider

She also includes the source code and precompiled binaries on the CD-ROM which comes with the book.

It would have been nice if she'd included DOOM, but I suppose she only wanted "open-source" games.

Some authors write in a style that demonstrates their technical mastery at the expense of reader comprehension. By contrast, some modern technical books talk down to their readers in a silly way. This book is like baby bear's porridge, just right. Not too hot, not too cold. Begining with the first enterprise storage technologies, the authors explain where we are today, how we got here and where we are going. Storage concepts are broken down piece by piece and presented in a concise, understandable way. I couldn't recommend this book more highly.

This book is the best book on UNIX programming around. Burk and Hovath have left no topic about programming in the UNIX environment untouched. Whether it is expaining the environment and usage of vi or emacs, or advanced CGI programming in Perl, C++, or shell, this book leaves nothing to be questioned. The organization is superb and the well documented index allows this book to be used as a reference time and time again. I would suggest this book to anybody who is working with programming in UNIX.

Although the book is very old (1986) it was written in a precise, and neat way. It aims at the subject matter and uses examples to make the items more clear. Infact I wanted to order it. But unfortunately it is out of stock. Please let me know when it is reprinted (if at all the authors are still alive).

This is an excellent book.

I just popped on to Amazon to see what other books the author has because this one was so good - saw there were no reviews so thought I would just add my 2c
- detailed and comprehensive
- magnificent colour photos throughout
- every topic, every tool jam packed with gems of tips, it seemed that everything had something new to add
- tells you what, why, how for every tool imaginable

note this is for HAND tools that means hand powered, NOT electric tools held in your hand, we're talking chisels etc.. here, but also things such as vices, sharpening stones etc.. etc.. it covers all the traditional tools.

very good, well worth a look, even if you experienced it is a good read, and if you are a beginner, well it is excellent

This book blew me away!

This book blew me away! I've been using Linux (in addition to Windows) for quite some time. I was excited when I first downloaded the free version of WordPerfect for Linux. Finally, world-class word processing on Linux. It's pretty easy to use. But some things just aren't in the documentation. This elegant book by Phyllis Davis told me everything -- and I mean everything -- that I needed to know about using WP for Linux in a mixed environment. The instructions are detailed and step by step. In addition to the basics, the book covers many advanced features, such as merging and sorting, and working with fonts. It makes it all very easy! Worth the price of admission: the explanation of logging on to WordPerfect as the administrator to add new fonts. Congratulations, Phyllis Davis: this book is a splendid achievement.
