Comprensive and amazingly well written...!

This book is truly amazing. The author appears to be very knowledgeable but more importantly he is a writer. There are so many poorly-written books about computers, hardware, software et al. that I have become wary of buying, let alone reading... R.W. Smith makes the rather unattractive (at least to me) subject of hardware fascinating: by the time I had finished reading the LHH I found myself fantasizing about building my own PC... If like myself you have found out the hard way that Linux on an i386 means acquiring some knowledge of the nuts & bolts beneath the system and find that with so many components and so many brands to choose from you need something that's both accurate and conceptual this is an absolute MUST...!!! I have ordered RWS's book about networking Linux & hope it's the same vintage.

Nice introduction to Ubuntu and Linux commands
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-27
As a university instructor, I was looking for a simple introduction to Linux for possible classroom use. Mike McGrath's Linux in Easy Steps is the best book I have found to address these needs. It is not perfect, but it is quite good. The book includes 10 chapters:

1. Getting started.
2. Exploring the desktop.
3. Touring the filesystem.
4. Running office applications.
5. Running media applications.
6. Command the shell.
7. Handling files in the shell.
8. Performing shell operations.
9. Networking with the shell.
10 Command references.

This book has the double advantage of introducing the reader to both Ubuntu, one of the most popular Linux distributions, and to Linux command lines. The style is clear and practical with a lot of steps and visuals. Chapters 1-5 cover Ubuntu and GUI applications. Chapters 6-10 cover Linux commands.

It is a short book (192 pages), and sometimes I wish that the author would spend more time explaining specific terms (e.g., swap partition, logical partition). In addition, I would have hoped that he explains how to install fonts on page 63, use Skype as an example on page 84, and use Windows Media streaming on page 89.

But, on balance, the author focuses primarily on what a new Ubuntu/Linux user needs to know to use the OS. The "Hot tip" and "Don't forget" items in the margins provide valuable additional information (e.g., what is the ext3 file system). The chapter about the Linux file system clearly explains with nice Windows parallels the different Linux directories. I have not seen a better explanation than McGrath's in my other Linux books. The description of the sudo command is outstanding for new Linux users. Even though this book is an introduction, McGrath goes into some detail about command lines. Things like printing from the shell, evaluating expressions, and scripting for the shell are included in the book. Chapter 10 recaps all the commands discussed in the book.

Overall, this is an excellent and inexpensive book for Ubuntu/Linux beginners.

Excellent introduction to Linux, if you know absolutely nothing about this new Operating system. You can find it anywhere on the Internet, but I didn't have the time to search... It tells you haw to install the all of the major distributions Red Hat,Debian....,anyone installing Linux could use these, they're great. I liked the tutorials. They cover all of the details like file navigation, changing directories, setting permissions, basic commands. An excellent tutorial for anyone new to Linux.

A good Linux "How to" book.

A great book giving the hands on, step by step process on how to set up a Linux Internet Server. Includes all the information the other books don't -- like the actual wire from the server to the internet, dealing with your ISP & other important facts. The book is a good one source reference that really covers EVERYTHING, to some degree. Many good tips about getting additional information for topics not covered in detail by the book.

Complete examples make this little book an excellent buy. I use the author's listings to guide conversion of device driver modules from Linux 2.0 to Linux 2.2. There are a few typos in the text, but fortunately the listings appear to have been prepared directly from machine-readable sources.

This is a MONSTER of a book! At your finger tips you will

THIS BOOK is a monster and I mean that in a good way! I don't know about you, but there have been hundreds of times when you just don't remember or wish you had the MAN pages for Linux printed out. Sometimes using MAN to get info about a command doesn't work... By this I mean it's 2 o'clock in the morning and you just can't get the damn thing sorted out and you realize you've been reading the same chunk of screen for the past half hour and your eyes feel like they've been dipped in Ajax. Well, I don't know about you, but the old fashioned paper and ink just seem to give you you more information! This is not just the man pages though, it lists the file hierarchies, ASCII codes and in fact everything you need to know about fiddling with the system. At almost 2000 pages, this excellently typesetted book is a great addition to your Linux library. It is rated a "must have" Sections I USER COMMANDS II SYSTEM CALLS III LIBRARY FUNCTIONS IV SPECIAL FILES V FILE FORMATS VI GAMES VII MISCELLANEOUS VIII ADMINISTRATION AND PRIVILEGED COMMANDS IX KERNEL REFERENCE GUIDE

Well, of course I would think that this is the greatest book because my son wrote it. Just browsing through my free copy make me glow with pride. Now as for the contents, it sure looks impressive. There is a wonderful amount of technical information I can tell you!!!

Linux comes of age!

This isn't really a book - it's the official release of Red Hat Linux 6.0 - an OS that may someday compete with Microsoft Windows.

Red Hat 6.0 is easier to install than previous versions, and the boxed set here comes with full documentation, additional application bundles, and 90 days tech support. Not recommended for computer neophytes, but if you want to check out Linux, this is the package to buy.

Making Linux Understandable

I bought this book a while ago because I was curious about the subject (and I happen to know the author). While I have never spoken to him about this book, in my opinion, it takes the reader through a complex subject step by step. I would recommend it to anyone interested in Linux.
