This book covers so much general 3D information that it is a must-have even for people not using the Macintosh platform, assuming Mr. Lyn doesn't come out with others geared towards other platforms. This book is chock full of information, ranging from the beginning level to the advanced level. I have been involved with 3D for several years, and each time I read this book, I learn something new and valuable. The only area I can think of that is weak is the section on blobbies, possibly because there aren't many Mac programs support them yet.

A wonderful overview of DTP and typography
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.

This book is compiled from postings and writings on the Desktop Publishing Forum on Compuserve back in the late 1980s. While it's out of date and out of print now, the solid information in it on typography, composition, and design make it worth trying to find a used copy from one of ...out-of-print sources. Don Arnoldy, Brad Walrod, and Thom Hartmann did a brilliant job with this book!

Best "intro to programming" book ever
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 1999-11-27
Scott Kronick had the misfortune to write the best book for first time programmers that just happened to be too specific to a single compiler. This book was a victim of the pace of computer change.

This book conveys the spirit of programming artistry. From page 1, it soaks you in the gee-whiz giddy excitement of making a computer do fun things. In the course of introducing all the essentials of structured programming and the Macintosh toolbox, it conveys the glory and the agony of learning to be a god over the world inside your computer. Even better, it does so while promoting a sense of balance between hacker concerns and Real Life. For instance, this passage from his chapter on debugging:

"The bomb lies. No error is serious... Mr. Moss defines a serious error as failing to ask for a telephone number in a chance meeting with a person you would like to date."

Scott sprinkles the thoughts of his alter-ego, Mr. Moss, liberally throughout the book. Mr. Moss's experiences and wisdom are the source text for exerises in text display, saving and reading files.

Even though the programming environment described is obsolete, the perspectives of Mr. Moss and the irreverent enthusiasm of Scott Kronick make this worth reading and owning.

This IS the greatest Original Mac/Mac Plus repair book ever. Too bad it's out of print. I repaired 8 Macintoshes (5 without parts!) based on the information provided in this book. Now I can't find it anywhere, and I've got a dead Mac Plus, with a unrecognized problem. Such is life. And no, from what I hear, the newer Dead Mac Scrolls book only covers COLOR Mac Classic & newer. Darn

I bought an eMac in May. I've been a Windows user since 1997, but I just decided to try something different and get a Mac. Someone recommended this book to me, and I thought it was really interesting and useful. Unlike other computer books, it doesn't just dryly go through information. It sort of tells a story around the content, which makes the book a lot more enjoyable. I thought it was cool that a whole chapter was devoted to switching to Office for Mac, as Office is the program I use the most on my Windows machine, and the chapter about security was really helpful as well.

It Worked For Me!

I bought this book because I wanted to be able to use my PowerBook to access our office resources, which are 100 per cent Windows-centric. I've managed to avoid learning anything about networking in the past--at work, all of that's handled by others and at home, AppleTalk makes having to know anything optional. Lucky for me, I came across this book. It's well-organized and concise; I was able to find what I needed to know and skip over parts that weren't relevent. The book isn't bogged down in details--in many places, it simply points you in the right direction or at the right software solution. Within a week or so of buying this book, I was working almost seamlessly with our Windows stuff using my PowerBook!

This Book for Mac or Windows is Outstanding. It covers just about all the commands in Lingo, And no one knows them better than the person who wrote the Lingo language. Sample movies help explain complex commands in an easy straight forward manner.

I find this book extremely helpful in providing information about Macs. As an "older" Mac user I needed advise about the capabilities of my computer and how to solve computer issues. This book is it! From the hip good-looking kid on the cover to the last page, I am thoroughly enjoying this book and find it very useful. A must for all Mac users!
