Great for for someone stepping into D-SLR world

It is a great book for someone considering or just bought a new digital SLR. Besides the basics and theories, it also tell us what kind of "gadgets" we need to get for our cameras.

Excellent book for a beginner

I got this book from my local library before I got my camera. It was incredibly helpful in many areas. I used the information to pick which dSLR camera to get. Then I used it to help me pick which lens to buy to go with my kit lens. Now I am using it to learn more about how to take good pictures. This book is a wealth of information! Now I just have to decide if I want to shell out the money for it when I can keep getting it from the library.

One thing that I like about this book is that it doesn't try and persuade you towards one brand or a another. Some books are very obviously pro-this or pro-that, and it is hard to get a non-biased opinion. I felt that this book was pretty neutral in that sense.

Indispensable Assembly Language Reference

Would that more programming reference books were as useful, well-written and engaging as this one, even on a subject as "dry" as the assembly language directives for the Intel 80386/486 family of CPUs.

I'm replacing my lost copy of this reference even though I rarely use it anymore, just because it is such an indispensable reference!

the greatest low-level reference available on 8088-80486

I think this is the best book ever published about programming the Intel x86/x87 family processors up to 80486. I would love to have an extended version covering Pentium, too.

Excellent Introduction to What Vista Does
Helpful Votes: 28 out of 33 total.
Review Date: 2007-06-06
This book is an excellent introduction to Windows Vista in many ways. If you want to learn about Vista because you've gotten it on your new computer it's great. It has a summary of all the new features and capabilities that Vista brings. In fact, in my experience there's a point to recommend Vista that he doesn't mention, i.e. It's a lot more stable than XP. Vista simply doesn't crash. =

But should you upgrade an older system to Vista. Although this book talks a fair amount about upgrading to Vista, the author says on his web site that buying a machine with Vista pre-installed is a lot simpler. That too backs up my own experience. Vista is a lot more tricky about the hardware configuration than older systems. You need a lot more memory - 512 MB is minimum and a gigabyte is recommended. I'd really recommend 2 GB. Your video card now requires 64 MB, with 256 MB recommended. (Do you remember when PC's themselves didn't have that much memory?) And you need a 7200 RPM disk drive.

With the price of PC's these days, it's probably cheaper to buy a new machine with Vista installed than try to upgrade, especially if you have to buy memory, video card and a new hard drive.

I have Scott Mueller's book (quite excellent, but hard to read) and one by Peter Norton (useless). I keep pulling this one out because it's the easiest one to find what I'm looking for, and by far the most fun to read. I hope this Graves charector writes more computer books.

This is my FAVORITE computer hardware book!

I've looked everywhere for a book that had lots of detail, but wasn't too hard to read. This is IT! Michael Graves writes really well, and that's rare in the world of computer books. Most of them put you to sleep. He tells lots of funny stories as well as giving you all the information you'll ever need to know about computer hardware. You have to have this book!

Finally, a book for the masses. PCs 6 in 1 covers pratical issues including purchasing decisions, setting up your new computer, choosing printers and other peripherals, and how to get the most out of what you have. Unlike the "dummies" series PCs 6 in 1 gives pratical every day information. Also, unlike the expert series, you don't find yourself overwhelmed by specifications and jargon. This is a book that should be next to every users computer.

Thorough overview of the personal computer.

I have used this book as a student and found it to be very easy to understand. The book covers a wide range of PC topics, all in terms a layman can understand. The information seems to be accurate and current. As an instructor, I also recommend the book to my students as an excellent reference book. I would not part with my own copy.

Sweet Book on Photoshop

The book brings it all home. It has a dedicated center section with photo glossy pictures of the final projects you create step by step through the book. It also teaches some very essential tricks on photo retouching, text manipulation and layers. This book deepened my understanding of Photoshop considerably. I owe these guys a lot. The book can also be read in a non-linear fashion with great results.

This is the one for REAL beginners!

As a real beginner to Photoshop, I've had some disappointing experiences with the so-called "easy" guide to the program. The Dummies series were too wordy and the Visual Quick Guide was too confusing for your first step. This book offers something in-between and the advantages of both.Part 1 contains Techniques and Part 2 has Projects where you can actually learn to apply the techniques. The book walks you through the features in a simple and clear manner yet with enough explanations. This is a great book for starters.

This is a great book. The authors know their subject well, and more important they know how to explain it in language that is easily understood. (Plus, it's even kind of funny sometimes.) To put it simply, I'm getting more out of my Pocket PC than I was before--much more than if I'd just tried to figure the thing out on my own. Again, this is an excellent aid--and for me, necessary.

The only book you need for Podcasting advice....until the next edition comes out.

Review Date: 2008-03-29
A couple of years ago, I got Podcast Solutions and was really impressed with its' overall content. For its' time. Of course, with everything on the web, practically everything changes and thus, a new edition of this book had to be released. And it's still probably the best book out there. Lots of updated information on how to create, edit and upload podcasts and for the most part, do it on the cheap since if you're really looking to make a million bucks doing this, keep looking. Lots more stuff on video which has truly taken off thanks to YouTube and similar sites and newer ways to promote and get advertisers to your site. You'll also learn how to use WordPress and similar blogs and create a podcast site as a result. That's what I did with one of my clients. Not as thick as the Bibles out there but at least you won't get a hernia trying to lift it. You should be getting ideas for your own (or your clients own) podcasts within minutes of surfing thru this book.

The perfect book for all podcasters.

Yes that's right, this is the perfect book for any and all podcasters. If you are a podcaster, or want to be one or just want to find out what it's all about buy this book.

The title says it all; Podcast Solutions. Chock full of info, written concisely, humorously, intelligently, informatively and in language that anyone can understand (even me) this is the one book to buy on the subject. It takes you step by step down the road to conceiving, creating, recording, producing and profiting from your show idea. This book covers every nook and cranny of the considerable field of information on both podcasts and vodcasts.

I personally have used both editions of this book to help me get my podcast going as well as optimizing it once it was up and running. What I really enjoyed about this book is how the authors explain things so that not only do you know what to do next but also why it works. Not only that there are many highlighted sections where the authors share a personal experience that really drives a point home. This brings the whole process into very sharp focus.

And their personal experience goes way beyond the technical aspects of podcasting and vodcasting. On page 85, for example, they share a tip that is critical to anyone who really wants to make effective communication with their material. And that is this; "speak as if you are speaking to one person". That one piece of advice can turn a blah and lifeless presentation into one with depth and impact. This book is loaded with tips like that.

I can't say enough good about this book. Without it I may not have gotten my podcast going. The two guys who wrote it have been doing this since it began and they know all the tricks. Don't think about, just buy the book. You'll thank me and more importantly you'll thank the authors Dan Klass and Michael W. Geoghegan.
