This is an excellent book. If you want to know how O.J got off or the reasons why it seem that the guilty go free then you have to read this book. Ashley goes above and beyond the call of duty as he gets his clients off the hook.

A spoof of today's legal system -how to get away with murder
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1999-07-22
The book is a tongue-in-cheek romp through a parody of today's legal system. Each chapter deals with a new character whom sleazy lawyer Ashley Blackwood must defend for the nefarious crime he or she has almost certainly committed. And Ashley is very creative in doing just that! In fact, he can twist and turn the law beyond recognition. Sound familiar? It will to anyone today who wonders, at times, what our legal system is coming to.

The author develops each character with meticulous and subtle detail. Although the characters are entirely fictional, the reader will, no doubt, see the resemblance to some very famous (and infamous) defendants.

The writing is modern and sophisticated. A very funny book! The reader will keep turning the pages to see what impossible case the next client will bring to Ashley and how Ashley will get him off! The action is seen through the eyes of Attorney Blackwood's worshipful assistant. At the end of each case, Ashley summarizes his work with a Rule of how to defeat the system is such cases.

I first used this book in 1978. It is by far the best text for Qualified Retirement Plans anywhere. I highly recommend it.

Best Treatise on Qualified Plans Available
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1999-10-27
This is by far the best treatise on tax qualified retirement plans I know of. It is concise, comprehensive and well organized, with helpful tables and finding aids (although as is usual with West publications, the index is next to useless; try finding the discussion of eligible rollover distributions using the index, for example). The book also contains a helpful section on nonqualified plans. The second volume contains model volume submitter plan documents and related summary plan descriptions. Employee benefits attorneys will be the primary audience for this work, but it will also be of value for actuaries and other employee benefits advisors. The treatise has been updated through USERRA, GATT, TRA '96 and SBJPA '97. It includes a discussion of EPCRS (IRS Rev Proc 98-22) and proposed Treasury regulations on deemed distribution of defaulted loans (Prop Treas Reg ยง 1.72(p)-1). Recent developments that were too late to cover in the work include the leased employee decision in Burrey v. Pacific Gas and Electric Co., 159 F3d 388, and new Internal Revenue Code section 402(c)(4)(C).

Comprehensive and concise-the first resource I reach for!

This book is so comprehensive and concise that I habitually reach for it first when conducting research into the tedious and complex world of qualified retirement plan laws and regulations. Mr. Canan's text has consistently proven to be right on the money in its interpretations and is always accurate in citing primary legal sources. It is my gateway to efficient, accurate and complete legal research on retirement plans.

'Real Dads stand up' is a good read on how to expolit the family law system to it's fullest advantage if you are a father. Another book on Amazon, FAMILY COURT HELL, goes into a real life child access case that lasted ten years and 133 court hearings-and only resolved when the father stepped outside the family law system and launched the worldwide Fathers 4 Justice protest group. Best to read both books, especially if you are going through this anti father family law system.

This book is excellent. Don't to court without it. Don't let your lawyer go to court without it. It is a life saver for any father who feels like giving up after taking a beating in court. I gave this book out as Christmas gifts to friends. It is easy to read and you can really know the law. Some lawyers need this book. If you want to advocate for your rights this book shows you how. Alicia M. Crowe really breaks down the system so that you get it. Two fathers I gave this book too were in a state of depression over not seeing their kids. One joined a local fatherhood group and got active and ultimately got empowered to help other fathers. The other won custody of his son. Both read Real Dads Stand Up and they thank me everytime they see me. Alicia M. Crowe really cares about famalies and it shows in her book. I heard about her from K-Rights radio.com. Her interview was absolutely mind blowing.

Must read. A Bible .A Life Saver.

I definitely recommend this book.I read this book about a dozen times. This book is remarkable. It has helped me in family court. I had no clue what was going on in my case and my lawyer was either getting an adjournment and not speaking up when I thought he should be saying something. He was letting the mother get away with everything at my expense. I read this book and it made a difference in my case because I learned that I had a right to visit and that my kids mother could not get in the way and continue to deny me visits with my kid. I felt armed with the right stuff after reading this book. I was also able to put my lawyer straight.

This book is a step-by-step guide that is easy to read and understand. Law and legal concepts are often confusing and hard to grasp without some legal background. Real Dads Stand Up is like a road map to manuevering the court system. This book tells you what they don't want fathers to know about family court. This book is a must read for any father who wants to get active in their childs life.

I like the sports analogies in the book. I could really relate to not knowing when to play offense or defense. I was stuck somewhere in the middle getting knocked over the head with the ball. My case got settled and my kids mother knows now that I know what should be going on in court. I was shocked after the about the third chapter when I really looked at the name on the cover and saw that this book was written by a woman. Wow! It was like she knew what she was talking about. She was standing up for fathers. I felt like I had an edge since this information was coming from an expert.

It's about time. I learned that child support is not payment to see my kid. I also learned how to deal with the child support system. Ms. Crowe is truly a gem. After reading this book I restored my faith. Having this book was like having an angel on my shoulders whenever I went to court. I learned how to fight back and organize my files and what papers I needed. I now know how to deal with the court system. I sat and read this book and could not put it down for hours. Each chapter made me get stonger.I really liked the chapter on changing a child support order. At the end of the book there are court forms that are really helpful. This books walks you through when you get served with papers all the way to what happens at the hearing and after the hearing. It took my fear away.

I picked this book up from the airport store on my way back from the USA, really knowing nothing about the author. When I arrived Buenos Aires I have read the first half of it, and I couldn't wait to reach home to continue my reading!!!Congratulations to Friedman! I have already purchased two more books written by him, by e-mail!

This book has everything I want in a mystery--human drama, plot twists, surprises, and a hopeful ending--and doesn't have what I don't want--excessive violence. I've enjoyed Kate Wilhelm's courtroom dramas and was glad to find another good author now that I've read them all--Mr. Friedman's plot was even a little more plausible than hers are. I'm looking forward to ejoying more of his books.

I picked up this book at the library because an old man, who had heard me talking to my mom about what I had read, told me I would like it. I was a little skeptical about an author I had never heard of, who looked like something out of the 70's. Boy, was I wrong! I got through it in 2 nights, only stopping because I fell asleep. The story starts off slow, but when he gets going, Friedman writes just as well as Grisham and Turow. And the plot is electrifying. Who would have ever thought of a murder victim's father defending the accused, angry daughter-in-law. The end was enough to make me really think. I never would have thought of the real killer. A very good book.

This fine book will interest students of supreme court decisionmaking. Those interested in the presidency, the New Deal and/or the evolution of civil rights policy will benefit from reading this book.

Specialists will enjoy the academic perspectives. General readers can learn a lot of history because the book is not suffocated by the jargon that harms many university press books.

An interesting read about an important era

This well written book will be enjoyed by a variety of readers. It presents a fascinating account of important political struggles in the New Deal era. While focused on judicial politics and civil rights, it covers many aspects of American politics in the Roosevelt era. The book refutes the notion that FDR did not advance the cause of civil rights. Through judicial appointments and the creation of the Civil Rights Section of the Justice Department, FDR sought to undermine white supremacy in the South. The author argues convincingly that the Roosevelt administration did much to engender the Brown v. Board of Education decision that changed America forever.

This book will be most valuable to those interested in American politics, history, and race relations.

Critical History

Review Date: 2002-05-18
Professor Kinoy's persoanl account of legal struggles against reactionary forces in this country for over six decades is a chilling and inspiring antidote to forgetfulness. This book should be required reading in american history courses, especially now when opportunistic politicos and businesses once again exploit paranoia to keep civil rights and constitutional order under siege. Though Mr. Kinoy's style may sometimes seem repetitve, his book is an honest search for the answer to a question all too rarely asked: what can a citizen do, in the darkest of times, to help this country live up to its ideals?

A Great Book on Civil Liberties and the Law

Review Date: 2001-04-25
Kinoy is an unsung American hero. Always willing to defend the underdog, he has sometimes overcome tremendous legal obstacles and emerged on top. This book chronicles his more well-known cases: the Rosenbergs, the Chicago Seven, Martin Luther King and the Montgomery Bus Boycott, Adam Clayton Powell, and many more. Why Kinoy isn't more well-known is a mystery.

A must-read for all public interest lawyers

Review Date: 1999-04-06
In his uniquely humorous, heartfelt, and soulful voice, Kinoy teaches the reader about the behind-the-scenes battles fought by the legal workers of the US civil rights movement. Shocking stuff revealed as Kinoy packs a lot of information about judges, FBI agents, and freedom fighters in this can't-put-it-down book. If you are considering trying to use the law to achieve justice, you should read it. You should also join the National Lawyers Guild.

For anyone with an interest in law or history this is a great read. Justice Rutledge was my grandfather's first cousin -- thus the initial reason I bought the book. Unfortunately the dust jacket was crinkled upon arrival so I'll have to send it back for a new copy.

As the folks at Amazon could tell you, I read many novels and very few biographies. I am a corporate lawyer, and have not practiced constitutional law since I clerked for Judge Ferren, the author of this Rutledge bio, more than 20 years ago. I picked up this book because of my connection to the author, but I stuck with it for other reasons. First, the writing is elegant and precise; it is a very readable book. The book tells the story of a good man (and very good lawyer/dean/judge) who is concerned with doing his job right, respected others, was respected by others in return, and achieved great things -- what an encouraging, uncynical story! (Not dissimilar to the author's own story, a fact that creates an extra richness of texture in this book, especially in its descriptions of the life of an appellate judge.) In addition, the constitutional issues that the Court dealt with during WWII and the immediate post-war era remain fascinating -- and very timely. These issues are made understandable to nonexperts without being oversimplified. I learned a lot, and greatly enjoyed the process.

A Fine Biography of a Neglected Justice

Review Date: 2004-12-14
At long last, thanks to Judge Ferren, we have a complete biography of Justice Wiley Rutledge. While Rutledge is not much remembered today, and his tenure on the Supreme Court was relatively brief (1943-49), his significance merits more attention than he has received. Judge Ferren employs a completely different approach than the only other biography of the Justice, Harper's "Justice Rutledge and the Bright Constellation" (1965). Harper focused almost exclusively upon Justice Rutledge's decisions. Judge Ferren does not get Rutledge on the court until page 222 (out of 548). While one might conclude that perhaps too much detail occupies the pre-Court discussion, I can't think of another judicial biography that so effectively affords one a feeling of becoming so intimately familiar with its subject. This initial section is particularly effective in discussing the political maneuvering that accompanied filling several vacancies on the Court, including Rutledge's. The book's central focus, Rutledge on the Court, is very well developed. Judge Ferren not only brings his own insight into the judicial process to his analysis, but discusses some unique aspects as well, such as Rutledge's habit of asking trusted law faculty members their opinions on issues before the court, and Rutledge's exhaustive preparation for writing opinions. The book also adds to our understanding of the personal interplay in that most bombastic of Supreme Courts, that chaired by Chief Justice Stone. Interspersed with the discussion of Court cases is additional biographical material relating to the Justice. Finally, the underlying research is simply awesome--truly a labor of love. While it is a very long book, if you are interested in Justice Rutledge or his period on the Court, it makes for indispensable reading.

"Why didn't we learn this in law school?!!"

Anyone who survived the confusion of case-method during first semester law school and never learned anything useful until studying commercially available outlines the night before final exams knows the feeling of relief this book provides.

SCHOLARLY WRITING FOR LAW STUDENTS is not a crutch for the lazy. It's an extremely well-organized and comprehensive guide to figuring out the precise steps required to produce quality scholarly legal writing.

Fajans & Falk don't spoon-feed you a "how-to" on scholarly writing -- they simply give you a clue and then help you find your own way. They are unpretenious, funny, and inspiring. Buying this book is easily the best investment I've ever made.

I've never written an amazon.com review before -- but this book inspired me to do so. I've bought a copy of this book for every law student I know. I refer to this book at least once a week to assist in my own legal scholarship...

Should be required reading from Day 1 at Law Schools...

After reading the 1st 3 chapters, I went back with a highlighter over the previous chapters & there was something that I needed on every page. Being in "limbo" while a spouse decides what he/she will do is so hurtful as well as very hard to understand. Jan Northington uses scripture to encourage, lift up & assure you that you're not alone & that there is a God who cares about your situation. If you emerse yourself in any book during your separation, this one should be included.
