I can't imagine any RIA firm, particularly those with CFP designees on staff that wouldn't be interested in this book. It is both well written and well organized. I intend to keep this book as a permanent resource. Opportunity to earn 20 hours CFP CE credit gives it great value as well.

I was quite "blown away" by the amount of accurate information in this book. In all of my years in this industry I have never seen it contained in one place so comprehensively. It is also quite easy to read and to find what you're looking for. I recommend this book as a guidepost to everyone in the investment advisory business.

Any area involving government regulations is destined to be very complex and very confusing. This is particularly true with securities and the SEC and state regulatory requirements. Ms. Demby's book provides a guide through the regulatory maze.
I am just beginning my journey into the financial planning profession, and this book will always be within easy reach.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and could not put it down. The writer sets a great pace with lots of twists and turns and it doesn't come of like a pre-packaged legal formula as so many do nowadays. I would highly recommend it. I work in the legal profession and this book is for real!

A very enjoyable read. You are drawn into the personality of the unlikely herione, Josie as she wends her way through the mystery and intrigue that the writer develops. You take an instant liking to her and root for the "underdog" as she strives to clear her innocent client's name. Michael Idoyaga develops the characters very well and the story is entertaining to the point you won't put it down. A must purchase.

This is a great read and a promising debut that leaves one wanting to read more about the characters and settings. The author captures well the uniqueness of New Orleans but also turns a keen eye to the little ironies, joys and twists of fate in life. There's fine depth here, but it also keeps you turning the pages at night.

Rumpole and the Golden Thread (Eagle Large Print)

Rumpole stories are like getting in touch with old friends after you've read a few of them. There is no ficitional character like the curmudgeonly Old Bailey hack, and we get to see him in six more wonderful stories in this book. The stories are, of course, all excellent, but I always pick a favourite and in this one it's "Rumpole and the Female of the Species". Rumpole's dry wit and acerbic tongue is at its best in this story as he is defending one of his old Timson gang of criminals, as well as trying to get a young female barrister accepted into Chambers. These stories never get stale, and they are all little gems in their own right. I highly recomeend that those who love to read and to laugh read Mortimer's long selection of stories about Horace Rumpole.

I wish that these stories had been narrated by Leo McKern; after all, John Mortimer wrote his Rumpole stories with McKern in mind. But if he wasn't available to narrate them, then Patrick Tull is a more than adequate substitute (which brings up the question: who on earth is Bill Wallis? The Recorded Books version that I rented doesn't mention anyone by that name.).

Tull does a great job of imitating the gruff-but-lovable Horace Rumpole, the barrister who makes courtroom dramas fun. I had not visited the Temple in quite a while, and it was good to reacquaint myself with both Erskine-Browns, Uncle Tom, and Guthrie Featherstone, Q.C., among others. If Patrick Tull is the narrator for any other Rumpole books I'd listen to them anytime.

Mortimer is a genius at writing because he makes Rumpole so real and memorable. And, how could anyone forget his wife, She Who Must Be Obeyed? My father, a lawyer, introduced me to Rumpole when it was a series on tv. I loved the TV Rumpole, but the books are even better! If you want a humorous, entertaining, delightful book about the English barristers and courts, this book is the right one. I loved this book and want more just like it!

"Saving Saddam" is not only a pageturner that you can't put down but a novel that you think about well afterward. This is fiction at its best. The brilliant, skewering commentary on the U.S. invasion of Iraq and our long, schizophrenic relationship with Saddam does not interfere with an equally compelling narrative. Although it transcends the genre with the weight of its ideas and the quality of its prose, as a suspenseful legal thriller, "Saving Saddam" also does not disappoint.

From the first page the plot develops fast and the book is impossible to put down. It has it all: grand political intrigue and many agendas the powerful ones have for Saddam and his buddies; a cool guy Malcolm with secrets in his past who takes on the big adventure and gets himself in the middle of this big game. Side plots and characters bring in exciting twists. Fast smart writing style and realistic non-fiction-like description of events be it Washington or Baghdad make this book a great read. Unexpected turns in the plot will keep you awake through the night till you finish the book - - and the end is the most intriguing part which will leave you thinking... Get it and enjoy!!

If you think this is an ordinary law drama, think again!

It was the title of the book that got me, let alone the graphic book cover depicting Saddam Hussein, still alive and speaking with a noose around his neck. Malcolm, the protagonist in the story, is the modern day everyman called to duty because of his rare skill (fluency in Arabic). You soon see this character develop as he rises to the challenge of representing a co-defendant of Saddam Hussein during the 2005 show trials, while dealing with surmounting personal conflicts. When Malcolm finds the objective of making sure the Iraqis receive a fair trial is not so easy to achieve, the plot thickens as you realize there is more to him being chosen as co-counsel than simply his language abilities.

The development makes you not want to put the book down. This book is a great, refreshing read, as it is contemporarily written, and makes you wonder if it is truly a fiction. You begin to question if the government in the story really wants to uphold justice, or merely create the semblance of it. This book is so well written, I don't only consider it a must read for lovers of legal dramas and historical-fiction, but for any fan of a good story. I highly recommened it!!

International conspiracy through the eyes of a believable protagonist

Saving Saddam is a fast-paced and exciting read. The main character,
Malcolm, is someone you can imagine knowing and being friends with in
real life, yet he finds himself playing a role in an international
conspiracy involving the U.S. and Iraqi governments, Muammar Qaddafi's
daughter, and Saddam Hussein himself. Because he is such a believable
and likable character, you can almost imagine that you could end up in
his situation (if you were a criminal defense attorney who could speak
Arabic, that is). The other characters - including Malcolm's
co-counsel, client (a former body double for Saddam) and imprisoned
mother - are multi-dimensional and well-drawn. The book paints a
colorful picture of life immediately outside the Green Zone in Baghdad,
while spinning a tale of the legal and moral twists and turns facing a
guy who really just wants to defend his client and get out of Iraq
alive. I really enjoyed this book and recommend it highly.

I'm happy to recommend this book - it's quite useful. The first half of the book is tips, the second half is 80 full-length essay exam with model answers. The tips section is built on Gallagher's essay writing "system" which is basically the IRAC system which every law student uses, modified into CRAC. Her "model paragraph" system is quite useful, and something that I wish I had learned about earlier in my law school career. The only downside is that the book was written in '96, and while substantively the information isn't out-of-date, it would be nice if it wasn't so old.

I knew I had a firm grasp on the material but just couldn't get it together. With this book, the bar exam writing process finally made sense! I'm extremely happy I found Mary's system because it helped me to pass on my third try.

I highly recommend this book to those looking to improve their exam writing skills. The book also contains some general bar study tips that helped me enormously. In my opinion this book is the bar exam study bible.

Having spent 5 semesters at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, and being a native of Jefferson County, I recognized some of the people and trials Morley Swingle wrote about and found them hilarious, entertaining, informative, and sometimes disgusting. It is a book worth reading and shows just how low some people will go or how honorable they will be. While the book doesn't necessarily flow from one chapter to the next, it makes it easier to be able to pick up anywhere in the middle of the book and read about a specific case. I only wish Swingle had referenced case and law numbers more. His simple explanations of legal lingo made reading easier and educational. Morley, if you're reading this...I sure am glad I never met you. :-)

The honest truth, as far as it went.

Disclaimer: I am not objective on this topic. I bought this book, but I only read one chapter, "The Case of the Millionaire Murder", that related the murder trial of Bill Pagano. The CSI officer on the case, Jan Vessell, is my mother. As I was away at college at the time of the crime, investigation, and trial, I had never read a complete and objective telling of what happened. Now that I have, I must thank Mr. Swingle for his tenacity and talent at successfully prosecuting a case that nobody in Jefferson County expected him to win.

Sadly, I wish Mr. Swingle had stayed in town, because the story has a typical Jefferson County ending. Were the ones who investigated this crime rewarded for their efforts? No. Wally Gansmann, Jan Vessell, and three other Jefferson County detectives were demoted. In my mother's case, with 13 years service to the department as the first female law enforcement officer in Jefferson County (and all the harassment you can imagine came with that), in spite of 8 years as crime scene investigator, attendee of the same FBI Academy Mr. Swingle attended, she was demoted first to dispatcher, then to jailor. My sister and I finally talked her into resigning from the department in 1993 after she was diagnosed with a bleeding ulcer, no doubt brought on by her attempts to salvage her career from what was left of the machinery left behind by "Boss Hogg".

And this is why Jefferson County is still the laughingstock of the St. Louis Metro area. My hat is off to you, Morley Swingle, for exposing what you could. You did an indescribable service to us. I only wish you could have helped us with the aftermath.

To the writer I say hats off and what a lot of fun I had reading this treasure. Great stories that keep you glued and also make it humorous at the end of each short story to give it that neat zing of laughter. The wanting to finish the next unfortunate event for some----but the fulfillment of gratitude for others-----also to see at the end of each story what the outcome of the next Scoundrel will be and how they get themselves a room at the Hoosegow. Thank You

Tales of A top Prosecutor

Swingle hits a home run with these stories of the interesting cases he's handled in South East Missouri.

Ranging from the hilarious to the not-funny-at-all, Swingle proves with his intelligence and wit why he's been re-elected as Cape Girardeau Missouri's prosecutor for many years, and will continue to be so.

The stories would be appreciated by Mark Twain, and bear a Twain-like edge along with the humor.
Ranging from a hilarious account of how a rough looking felon tried to pass a check stolen from a State Senator and got a face full of pepper spray for his trouble, to a story about a total monster who killed with no remorse, the stories are intensely interesting.

It's one thing to read a dry news paper account of the check passers efforts to cash in and something quite else to read Swingle's humorous account of a jaded pawnshop worker and a policeman with a sarcastic humor versus versus a hood who's not the brightest bulb in the criminal world but who's very willing to "discuss it" with the police.

Then too, the story of an unstoppable killer takes on a different color when I remember my frightened wife telling me that she heard something under our porch, when we lived in sight of the county jail the killer had just escaped from.
To say the least, the neighbors were not to sure what was going on while I was peering under our porch with a flashlight in one hand and an assault rifle in the other.
There's nothing at all funny about this case, but Swingle gives a good account of how he stopped the "unstoppable" murderer.

Swingle writes with skill and the ability to hold the readers interest, not the easiest job for many writers.
I've had the pleasure of both reading Swingle, reading about Swingle, and actually sitting on a jury in a trial he was prosecuting.

Swingle does the best job yet to date of describing just HOW a county prosecutor decides whether to prosecute, what to prosecute FOR, and how he prepares and presents his case.
Of particular interest is the information on why an honest prosecutor will not prosecute a case.

The man does it all with flair, and I heartily recommend reading his work.
I've been told that he hates to waste time, and when he has a few minutes on his hands, he writes.
Here's hoping there's more to come.

A Powerful Commentary on Patient Rights and Health Care Quality

"A Sea of Broken Hearts" is a valuable resource for the public, health care professionals and health policy makers. John James, Ph.D has suffered the greatest loss imaginable - the loss of a child - due to the limitations in our medical system. Instead of retreating and living in sorrow, John James has made a brave and conscious effort to carefully and methodically re-examine every aspect of his son's flawed diagnostic process to expose the actions that cost his son his life and that place all of us at risk.

This book details the practice of Cardiology and the many errors that plagued his son's interaction with the system, including misdiagnosis, miscommunication, the failure to utilize known medical guidelines and diagnostic tests not being performed properly. Mr. James also discusses the many actions that the reader should take to ensure that their cardiac care is appropriate, safe and thorough.

Mr. James goes one significant step further and offers solutions including a comprehensive outline of a national Patients' Bill of Rights. In doing so, John James tells us a tragic and compelling personal story and begins a vital public awareness campaign. "A Sea of Broken Hearts" is a moving tribute to his late son, Alex and one that will help save the lives of many people.

A must read Case Study for Positive Changes in Medicine

Review Date: 2008-01-18
A Sea of Broken Hearts by John T. James, who has a PhD in pathology, is a tragic story of a young athletic man who lost his life at age 19 after receiving care in several medical facilities and by several doctors who all failed to diagnose a serious, preventable heart condition. The book is a case study that methodically reviews his son's medical information with solid support from medical research literature. The story unfolds clearly showing malpractice, incompetence, and concealment, including revisions of his son's medical records. The evidence is an indictment of the medical system where doctors are not required to effectively continue their education, no effective oversight or recourse is available for patients for malpractice, and inadequate coordination among providers occurs. He documents that 300,000 deaths a year can be attributed to doctor or hospital errors. Also the USA placed next to last among 13 developed countries in a cited study of health care quality, which certainly supports a need for change in the country we assume has the best medical care in the world. James recommends positive actions that patients and legislatures need to pursue to improve medical care. The recommendations for change with a Patients' Bill of Rights have far reaching implications for our health care system. I encourage others to read the book, especially anyone who has experienced problems obtaining health care, and for legislators and special interest groups focusing on improving health care.

A must read if you have ever been treated by a physician!

Review Date: 2007-10-30
This book is a must read for anyone who has ever been under the care of a physician in America! This book is a heartbreaking story painfully pulled from the ashes of a father's grief. However, the story does not attempt to bash the American medical system; rather point out some major flaws that thousands of Americans have paid for with their life. The failures of the state medical board and other elements of the healthcare-accountability system are well demonstrated in the text. When I read this book, I felt compelled to share my thoughts with others. This book demonstrates that we can no longer afford to be afraid to question a physician's advice and qualifications! Your life (and your family's lives) depends upon you! While the book may appear to be unkind to those doctors who are unprepared to care for their patients; it recognizes that there are many excellent physicians in our current system.

"A Sea of Broken Hearts", tells the story of how death came to a college-age runner (Alex) because of uniformed, unethical, and profit-driven medical care. The story is told by his father, a medical scientist who expresses shock and dismay as he discovers the nature of his son's medical care. As a reader, you are empowered by being given the opportunity to decide how Alex's care should have differed from the care he actually received from doctors. The failure of Alex's cardiologists to gain his informed consent before invading his body was especially troubling; especially since many of us have signed these informed consent papers in a matter of seconds during a medical crisis. The documentation of technical points is organized and thorough, yet easily understandable to the non-scientist, leaving no doubt in the reader's mind that Alex's life could have been saved.

I found the figures to be extremely helpful, but each must be studied to make the medical pieces fit together. The "indictment" of Alex's healthcare providers is expanded in later chapters of the book to include the community of cardiologists. The author points out many unrelated examples of lapses in cardiologists' care for their patients which are documented in leading medical publications. Some of the blame for the poorly prepared medical doctor can be found in the weak continuing education system that physicians use to maintain their professional competency. The side by side comparison of pilots', mechanics' and physicians' continuing education was especially disturbing. In the end, the reader is finally left with some hope that the healthcare system can be fixed, but serious legislation, including an enforceable, and truly protective, patient bill of rights will be necessary.

A NASA scientist's analysis of the shortcomings of modern medical standards. Highly recommended.

This is the story of a tragic loss of young life. But even more, it is the story behind that story. John T. James is a NASA physicist whose 19-year-old son Alex died mysteriously of cardiac arrest shortly after undergoing invasive cardiac tests. In his quest to find out what happened to his son, James turns a scientist's eye on the medical care Alex received -- and did not receive -- in the weeks before his death. In the process, he exposes the shocking inconsistencies of the practice of cardiology in particular and medicine in general. Among other shortcomings, James documents the lack of strong medical standards, the lack of effective credentialing of medical doctors and, most dismaying of all, the institutionalization of this sorry state of affairs in the medical regulatory establishment. The accumulation of evidence is thorough and incontrovertible, as are James's proposed solutions. If you want to know the nuts and bolts of why medicine so often falls short of its goals, and what we can do about it, you need to read this book.

Lynn Bartlett is a bright and beautiful immigration lawyer in her forties who embarked on her second marriage with great expectations. Her new husband, Jack Hughes, is a kind, loving, funny, and intelligent man. Unfortunately, when Lynn married Jack, she underestimated the problems that she would have with Jack's grasping ex-wife and his two spoiled adult children.

Catherine Todd, in her funny and entertaining new book, "Secret Lives of Second Wives," explores the well-worn territory of how excess baggage from a first marriage sometimes drags a second marriage down. Todd's novel is not a rehash of old material, however. It is a refreshingly original story of a woman who is self-confident and comfortable in her own skin. Lynn is not willing to settle for second best either in her professional or her personal life. Her husband, laden with guilt about how he may have shortchanged his first family, incurs financial and psychological burdens that threaten to sabotage his relationship with Lynn.

Todd imbues Lynn's and Jack's story with a light and satirical touch. She takes amusing potshots at the materialistic and shallow lifestyle of certain Californians. The dialogue in "Secret Lives" is sharp and clever and the writing is crisp and fast-paced. Yet, underneath all of the lighthearted banter, there are serious undertones in this novel about the complexity of family relationships and the importance of commitment and compromise in a marriage. Catherine Todd's breezy prose style and her intelligent treatment of the dynamics of second marriages make "Secret Lives of Second Wives" a first-rate and very appealing contemporary novel.

Catherine Todd's breezy prose style and her intelligent treatment of the dynamics of second marriages make "Secret Lives of Second Wives" a first-rate and very appealing contemporary novel.

Fun time, page-turner, hard to put down!

I think that I enjoyed this book so much because I identified with it greatly---it was about a "second wife", married to a man with grown children and a local ex-wife, and all of the problems that occur in such a situation. I stayed up until 2am reading it and finished it the next day!

The author has a dry wit and the book is hilarious---I laughed out loud repeatedly throughout it. The main character is a late-forties second wife on her second marriage who has to deal with all that ensues when her husband has difficult and dysfunctional grown children and can't set boundaries or say no to his ex-wife. So the second wife begins to attend a support group called "The Anne Boleyn Club" to get new coping strategies and ideas to deal with her difficult life situation. More experienced second wives give her useful advice as she attempts to cope with all of the surprises that come when your new spouse has baggage from a former marriage.

I would call this book amazing and wonderful chick-lit. I loved it. It made me feel less alone in my current (and similar) situation. I loved the intelligence and humor of the author. I would recommend it to all second-wives, especially those of middle-age, but anyone who is curious about what it's like to be married a second time. Issues brought up in this book are not often talked about or written about, and I really enjoyed how the author courageously brought such issues out into the open, and in such an entertaining way, too.

Highly recommended.

An amusing often-melancholy character study

Immigration attorney Lynn Bartlett's first marriage was a disaster. For approximately a decade, she avoided serious alliances though that made the nights lonely. Tech business executive Jackson Hughes is divorced also, but unlike Lynn he has two children, supposedly adults. Lynn and Jackson are perfect for each other and marry. They settle in Silicon Valley, which is ideal, as his company is near and she has a strong client base in the green card professionals who lost employment due to the downturn in dot.com

One year after they tie the knot, Lynn throws a fiftieth birthday party for her spouse. Though contented, she is not totally into the gala as she finds a Russian scientist more interesting than her husband. She also detests having his children around as they treat her like a fungus; even worse his son plans to move in with them. His first wife has made a martyred appearance that deserves an Oscar. Only her peers at the Anne Boleyn Society provide any relief for the beleaguered second wife.

THE SECRET LIVES OF SECOND WIVES is an amusing often-melancholy character study. Lynn and Jackson work on (or ignore) family issues that make them seem real. Her clients also add depth to Lynn's character. However, his children behave so blatantly and appallingly nasty towards Lynn, readers will wonder why Jackson fails to divorce the duo. His first wife is subtler in her tactics so that she comes across as a sneaky, nasty, but clever schemer. Catherine Todd provides a solid tale that could have been a great novel if she had created realistic antagonists.

This is a great book...grips your mind, fast-paced, fun to read...right from the opening scene. Would make a great screenplay.

And, you can tell that George did his homework in researching facts, places, situations that are woven into the story. As someone who has worked on the inside of law firms and in international business, [without giving away the story...] I can tell you that all of the "wild & crazy" situations in The Senior Partner (ethical, financial and business-wise) are totally believable and representative of what sometimes goes on behind-the-scenes in "the real world."

Read it. You won't regret it.

I've become a huge and immediate fan of George Hammond. His writing holds that rare blend of tautly logical exactitude and out-there, what-if extrapolation that makes the best thrillers not only believable, but disconcertingly suspenseful. Take Grisham's The Firm or Turow's Presumed Innocent, add a little ethical Tabasco, and you've got The Senior Partner.

The lawyer-protagonist's first problem in this beautifully written legal thriller is that he loses his place in the spy novel he is reading. Then he hears the second scream. If, like me, you start down this road in the early evening, be prepared for a rewarding but sleepless night.

Thrillers, perhaps by their nature, are disappointing. The antagonist, so dangerous in the beginning of most books, turns out to be a clumsy sod whom the protagonist easily puts away. The good guy, meanwhile, always seems to run a little faster and shoot a little straighter than mobs of bigger and better-trained people. The result is that even the best thrillers take place in a sort of never never land.

George Hammond manages to avoid the flaws in the genre, creating believable characters in a realistic setting. To say that Hammond is better than Grisham is true, but not enough. That is like saying that caviar is better than popcorn. Hammond is in the same league as Geoffrey Household, which means that he is at the top of the form.

Hammond manages to pull off a double play, because, not only does he create a thriller in a whole different league, he also manages to invent a lawfirm which is both realistic and fascinating. Most lawfirms in literature have no connection to the real world. Writers tend to tart up the image of the practice of law, making cases and events far more melodramatic than is really the case. But while Hammond captures the staid nature of law firm practice, his writing is never dull. He fills his law firm with cases which seem real (with interesting details) and draws a culture which is more accurate, even, than Louis Auchincloss. As a practicing attorney, I can attest to the accuracy of the world Hammond has manufactured. Pay particular attention to the advice and aphorisms spouted by the partners; they happen to be true.

This is a perfect gift for someone contemplating a legal career. It is well written and exciting, so it will hold anyone's interest. But it also draws an accurate picture of what practicing law is all about. Hammond is one of those rare people these days who seeks the truth. He knows what the meaning of is is.

This book tells how to confront the harasser. If the harassment continues, the legal steps are covered. For an employer, it provides information on policies, complaint procedures, training sessions and monitoring to prevent harassment.
NOLO Press is noted for making legal information accessible to ordinary people. This topic is something that every supervisor and employer needs to be briefed on.

I found the book to be pretty straightforward and easy to read. It gives all the pertinent information on the subject from the law to how to stop sexual harassment to your legal remedies. One of the best features is that provides an array of case studies that clear up a lot of the gray areas. I used the book to help me develop a training on the subject, I recommend it to anyone who needs more info on the subject.

Every business with employees that does not have a sexual harassment policy in place needs to buy this book now.

Actions the authors say employers need to implement regarding sexual harassment include: Do whatever it takes to understand the law, the issues, and keep current; put in place a zero tolerance sexual harassment prevention policy that prohibits specific behaviors of verbal harassment, non-verbal tactics, and physical harassment; take action to stop sexual harassment that does occur and prevent reoccurrence and reprisals.
