An introduction to the struct and components of ATM

I work extensively with video equipment that uses ATM directly as the means to transport the video between multiple TV stations. A majority of my work is configuring the equipment to work correctly with the ATM network.

This book offered a very good explanation of the ATM Adaptation Layer (AAL). In particular, it described AAL1 in detail which my equipment relies on. This book was better that other texts that focus more on the layers beneath AAL.

If you want to have an overview rather than dig into the details about ATM network, this may be your best choice so far.

An excellent introduction book to ATM

Covers the topics in a straight forward explanation. The use of diagrams are very helpful. As questions came up in my mind while reading, the answers came up in the next pages. The only comment I have would have been to have a follow through for addition of new standards, such as AAL2.

Fabulous beginner book

The number of topics this book hits (although not in-depth or thorough) in 200 pages is quite amazing. I have plenty of reference books on the subject that don't even introduce some of the basic topics that are covered in this book.

TMN, ILMI, CAC, MPOA, LANE, RSVP, IPOA, IISP, PNNI, etc -- they're all introduced (and I do mean just introduced). Ibe is a good technical writer who uses concise, easy to understand language. There are several diagrams that illustrate points that are difficult to visualize and the topics are discussed immediately (you don't have to scan around several different pages to get the gist of something).

I am a programmer writing ATM DSL test automations, so I'm someone who often has to deal in-depth with the many different sectors of ATM technology. Since I have to jump topic to topic within the technology, I find myself having to "remind" myself how something fits in the whole picture. I do this with Ibe's book, so it's definately on my shelf -- but it doesn't gather dust b/c people are always borrowing it!

For someone new to ATM but not a technophile, this book should wet your appetite to get to the more robust (and dry) reference books.

Note: This book is for general introduction/understanding -- not as a reference tool.

This is definitely a book for systems administrators. You won't learn the basics about sendmail, or get an introduction. This book is for folks who generally know sendmail, but are having specific issues with it.

The first chapter has a lot of very specific fixes for a bunch of operating system specific issues. After that the solutions become a bit more general.

The two standout chapters are chapter four, on relaying, and chapter six on spam filtering. Both of these have great introductions and in-depth techincal descriptions, with effective graphics, covering the topics.

I recommend this book for systems administrators and for people actively using with sendmail.

A Much Easier Way to Handle Sendmail
Helpful Votes: 28 out of 34 total.
Review Date: 2003-12-31
The first killer application of the Internet was email. For over twenty years, the most common program used to handle this was sendmail, written by Eric Allman. Over this time, sendmail has become a fully fledged language, with a very inelegant syntax. To learn how this, you need the book "Sendmail" by Costales and Allman.

The basic problem is that twenty years of ever increasing complexity in mail handling has created concomitant complexity in sendmail. For system adminstrators, the sendmail configuration files are probably the most complicated things they have to understand and maintain.

The rub is that most sysadmins have many duties, and little time to thoroughly read the above book. What is needed is a crib sheet, that lets you quickly solve very common sendmail configuration issues. Wherein the need for this book. Hunt takes a pragmatic approach. He tells you enough to handle these common issues. Sometimes, this comes at a slight cost. For example, he never really fully explains the the sendmail class notation. For a rigorous explanation, you still need Allman's book. But as a practical matter, you probably not that curious about the notation anyway. Hunt's approach may solve your problems quicker!

An interesting aspect of this Cookbook is that it shows the recent evolution of sendmail, as seen in the subtitle at the top of the cover, "Spam-Fighting". Sysadmins who dealt with sendmail from 5 years ago or earlier will recall nothing pertaining to antispam techniques.

But just as email was the first killer application, the second killer application was the browser, starting in 1992-3. The third killer application was spam, often viewed via the second application. In the last 5 years, spam has grown amazingly. So much so that it has been debated on the floors of the US Parliament! It has gotten to the point that some alarmists are even claiming that this third killer app might be crippling the first app!

Well, this Cookbook has several sections, including an entire chapter, focussed on various antispam techniques, like procmail parsing, or hooking up to Real Time Block Lists like spamhaus.org. The efficacy of such methods may vary widely, but you do get a choice. Though none of these currently appear to offer a truly effective countermeasure. You are still getting tons of spam, aren't you?

Perhaps some genius in the not too distant future can help us!

Working with sendmail can be very challenging at times; while the documentation for it is very complete, finding real-life use-cases can be tough and messing up a configuration is very easy. Fortunately the sendmail authors and community adopted the m4 language to help make building and managing sendmail configurations less painful (I remember having bad dreams about sendmail configuration language when I started learning it). Even with m4, understanding what goes where when and why in a sendmail configuration file can be a real challenge.

O'Reilly helped we mere mortals out tremendously with the publication of "Sendmail: The Definitive Guide," a book that helped demystify and clarify many of sendmail's inner-workings and configuration options. Even with this book, it was still hard to answer real-life use case questions, like how to enable SMTP AUTH for sendmail, how do I use LDAP with sendmail, how do I use sendmail to accept email for multiple domains in a virtual hosting environment, how do I use blackhole list services?

Enter "Sendmail Cookbook." This clear, easy to read, well-indexed book contains a wealth of useful recipies that make previously difficult to figure out tasks quite easy. The book is organized in typical Cookbook fashion; each chapter or section stands on it's own, and if it does require knowledge of other sendmail configuration topics, the section includes cross-references to other relevant recipies and references to appropriate sections in the "Sendmail: The Definitive Guide" book, which is a nice additional feature.

This cookbook starts with recipies that step the reader through building and installing sendmail, with sections on configuring the build so that sendmail compiles with SSL/STARTTLS support, LDAP support, and SASL support. Chapters that follow deal with everything from enabling and configuring SMTP AUTH, to securing sendmail itself, to controlling spam. Recipies use m4 whenever possible and only dip into the sendmail configuration language when necessary, another feature I found very impressive.

I own quite a few O'Reilly books; this is one of a small number that I enjoy just picking up and flipping to a random page and reading; I always find something that I either didn't know or had forgotten. I wish I had this book seven years ago when I was struggling to learn the basics of sendmail configuration and administration; I might have more hair left if I had! I highly recommend this book to anyone who works with sendmail, be that daily administration or occassional troubleshooting.

It goes into the basics of bandwidth calculation, leading up to the technologies used to support the different kind of services.

If one were to look for a good read, this book is a good start for a newbie.

This book could be used as a pre-cursor to an indepth research into new technologies.

ADSL, ATM, ISDN is mentioned in the book.

Lastly, this book is not drab and has some humour in it.

I am an Telco engineer implementing adsl and cable modem networks for broadband access service in China. The book came just in time for me because my company is in the stage of building an ATM network providing service like Internet surfing and experimental vod etc via adsl and cable modem. And this book has given us quite clear an infrastructure for the practice.

I am a teacher and consultant to the telecom industry. I bought the book to sharpen my skill set and increase literacy. I was most impressed with Mr. Kwok's ability to take a highly technical subject and break it down understandably. The end result is that both the "techno-literati" and the "average Joe" are well-served. Mr. Kwok apparently is one of us "techies" who also paid attention in writing class. Kudos for an excellent reference work.

The most complete reference on ATM QoS theory I've seen.

Reference notation is excellent - Giroux and Ganti do a great job of documenting their sources, which was extremely helpful in cross referencing. If this book doesn't answer your question, it'll point you in the right direction.

Pretty technical reading, but that's what I was looking for when I bought it.

Excellent book for reference in ATM traffic management

This is a must for technical reference in ATM. To understand ATM, I started by reading this book. Then, I read the ATM traffic management specification in ATM Forum and quite a number of ATM-related papers. However, I still find the book very useful from time to time. It gives summary of different techniques presented in different papers (eg. schedulling mechanism in Chapter 5), and also overview of different parts of traffic management (at the start of each chapter). For beginners, some sections will be quite difficult, because it did get into the details. You just skip it, I think the rest still able to help you understand the traffic management of ATM. I really love this book. :)

This is an excellent book for anyone who wants a straight forward explanation of what ATM is and how it functions. First of all, the book is not to long; so when you look back through the book, you can easily find the information you want. Secondly, it is laid out in a logical format; you don't have to read a ton of pages before getting the answers you are looking for. Other books spread information about a specific topic throughout the book. With this book, you can learn the concepts you are looking for on a single page. This books strongest attribute is how the information is presented. Related information is presented simultaneously, not hidden until the next chapter. When I was writing a research paper on ATM, I found this book to be my favorite by far.

This book is an excellent resource on understanding the key concepts of wireless LAN and wireless ATM. About 80% of the book focuses on wireless LAN. I am from a non-wireless field but this book brings out the salient features of wireless networks in a very succinct and insightful manner. Understanding these concepts allow one to grapple with emerging wireless LAN technologies, which is currently evolving very quickly. It was no surprise that an abridged version of the book was distributed with Cisco wireless LAN products. To me, the book is written with the right depth. If you enjoy reading magazines such as IEEE Spectrum and Technology Review, this is the book for you.

Establishing New Rules for Land Registration
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-18
Cadastre: an official register of the quantity, value, and ownership of real estate used in apportioning taxes -- alternative terms for cadastre included: land book, property register, land registry and so on. Basically the cadastre contains a description of the land and a record of all of the rights that are registered on the land.

In the past two dimensional drawings sufficed as the surface of the land was all that mattered. Now a parcel of land, especially in the heart of a city may have many rights associated with it in regard to: underground utilities: electricity, water, gas, sewage, telephone or even a subway. Above the surface there may be height restrictions, restrictions against blocking the view or sunlight from a neighbor, fixtures such as streetlights or multiple ownership as in multi story condos.

This book discusses the technical aspects of creating a 3D cadastre and storing the information in a database management system. It uses state of the art 3D GIS software to create a conceptual model for 3D cadastre that can be translated into logical models.

This book brings to the fore a series of considerations for the state of land registration that have not been needed in the past but which seem mandatory for the future.

This text filled in the missing pieces for me in my quest to understand the papers being published in network performance analysis. The book is slanted towards ATM as the the transport technology for broadband networks, but the results can be extended to other protocols as well. The section on traffic characterization and MMPP modelling was worth its weight in gold to me (and was my reason for buying this book), Schwartz gently guides the reader through this difficult (for me!) topic. A must have for anyone involved with network performance analysis.
