I bought this book in 1998, the year that I decided to leave corporate America and start consulting as an Optical Engineer/Scientist. I took the leap and never looked back. In my field, this seems to be the decade of the Consultant. This book is not difficult to understand, is an easy read, and gets right to the heart of how much work it is to be self-employed. Scientists and Engineers that want to be consultants for a living get caught up in how smart they are and believe that everyone would come "beating down their door" as soon as they put up the "Services for Hire" sign. This book helps you evaluate what is necessary to make that step into consulting, how you find clients, how you maintain your contracts, how you determine how much you are worth in terms of salary, how to evaluate how your business is working, and exit strategies in case you figure out that it is not a career choice that is working for you. The authors' points relate to the gamut of different Scientific fields.

Now that this book celebrates its 10th anniversary, I would suggest the authors come out with a new edition that can address topics like using the internet, webpages, Google (and other search engines), to help find new clients (or to help them find you). There are many new options for consultants in terms of technology online that can help one hold conference calls and seminars without leaving your home office.

Even without a new edition, the points covered in this book are timeless. If you are even considering leaving academia or corporate America, let this book help you prioritize your options.

I found this book to be invaluable in terms of basic skills and information for backcountry SAR. My team uses the book as its training guide and all members use it throughout their training (even continuing education). Although a bit light on technical rescue, everyone will find this book useful if they are interested in learning how wilderness SAR should be done. I also found its companion text extremely valuable: Fundamentals of Mantracking.

What a well written, user friendly book!

Easy and fun to read. Seems to be right on target, and gives a lot of excellent examples to illustrate "secrets".

This will be a "handbook" for me as I start a new company, Encouragement Resources, LLC.

This book is excellent and can be ordered brand new from the author for $20. Whoever the person is selling it for $75 should be banned from Amazon.

In the past two decades the federal budget has tripled. However, popular wisdom to the contrary, the number of full-time civil servants has remained relatively constant. How does the government manage? In keeping with the American ethos that private is better than public, a large part of the business of government has been contracted out to accounting firms, think tanks, management consultants, and industrial corporations like McKinsey and Co., Peat, Marwick, Mitchell, and Co., the Stanford Research Institute, the RAND Corporation, Booz, Allen, and Hamilton, Westinghouse, and the Brookings Institution, among many others. The contractors do not merely build hardware and carry out a myriad of mundane tasks. They increasingly perform the functions of government itself, albeit in the guise of prvate efficiency and disinterested expertise, without accountability to the public. They make and implement policy recommendations, staff and restructure government agencies, reorganize railroads and hospitals, and produce the findings that allocate the spending of the federal budget dollar.

What is their track record? How well is the public interest served by the burgeoning and costly private breaucracy which government contracting has spawned? Is it proper to delegate public affairs to a shadow government of private, corporate, and governmental constituents? This book provided very good information and priorities for novice consultants, as well as experienced one. The book is very easy to read and provides many good and usable samples.

Very informative. One of the resources I reached for in researching this business opportunity.

A good friend gave this tape series to me as a gift at a time when I was considering relocating from Cleveland to Chicago for a new job. I didn't listen to it at first as I was "too busy" with my move. It turns out that my new employer had sugar coated the position, and that it was nothing like it had been represented. Days into the job, I was depressed. I started listening to Schoeniger's tapes. And I loved it! Gary Schoeniger has a calm confidence that helped me to open my mind to a different approach, a new attitude and a better feeling about myself. I realized that it was my talent this new employer sought and that others would want it too. I decided that despite a lot of fear and anxiety, I would quit (after only 4 weeks) and market myself as a litigation consultant. Using Schoeniger's techniques, I started cold calling, and now I have a successful business working with companies on their business conflicts. I would never have taken such a risk had I not listened to "Starting From Scratch". It is by far the most useful and practical of the "self help" works I have ever experienced, mostly because Schoeniger helps you with an actual plan for action.
