Patricia McConnell, Linda Tellington-Jones, and Stanley Coren praise this small, powerful book on the jacket.

McAuliffe is a teacher as well as an animal behaviorist and Tellington TTouch practitoner, and she distinguishes between training and teaching in her work with dogs. Teaching requires relationship, she says. Affection and respect are the foundation for learning. Because dogs are intelligent, resilient, highly social beings, a healthy relationship is the foundation for effective training---training that is fun for the dog, long-lasting, and reinforced positively throughout the dog's life.

Structured around the ideas of engagement, relationship, order, and stability, her book is a guide to creating a foundation of respect, trust, and understanding between dogs and their people. It is not a book of quick fixes. Anyone who doubts that dogs have intelligence, or even that they may have a sense of humor; anyone who has been told that force-based or "dominance" methods are necessary in dog training; anyone who is facing end-of-life decisions about their dog; or anyone who wants the best possible relationship with their dog could learn from it.

I enjoyed the format of this book because it breaks down all of the major diagnosis found in critical care into the most important parts. Things like assessments, treatments, diagnosis, lab tests and results, and important information. It is extremely easy to read, and you can find it quickly. A great book for all!

The most complete Behavior Modification Plan
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-09
This title is actually an old title. Dr. Johnson has re-named his book "F.A.M.I.L.Y. Rules: Positive Parenting with a Plan". Dr. Johnson presents the most complete behavior modification plan I have ever seen. He covers all the bases, and leaves no guesswork for the parent to stumble around for answeres. Yet, there is plenty of flexibility for families to apply theri own values, and their own lifestyles. Authoritative Parenting is presented in a very positive plan which includes the essential aspect of building healthy relationships between parent and child. Bad habits are replaced with good habits by the very nature of the program. Probably most unique is the fact that parents are held accountalbe for their own behavior in this program. It is completely fair, completely logical, and is just good, common sense.

A black boy is not allowed to sit down and drink a coke. Having to undress in customs when leaving South Africa. These were two events that galvanised Reverend Leon Sullivan into action. And what action! The book reads like a novel. Rev Leon made a real difference in breaking down racial barriers in the US and in ending Apartheid in South Africa. I attended a lecture of Rev Leon in London in October 2000. Being well over seventy Rev. Leon is still a very inspiring speaker. That is why I bought the book. I was also curious to meet the man behind the Sullivan principles, part of the global compact between the UN and more than thirty global companies. The book describes very clearly how Rev. Leon succeeded in being such a strong and effective force for the good. Faith, effective use of non-violent power, and education are his tools. Education focuses on giving the downtrodden self-confidence and skills that are in demand. It is one of the few books that breathes optimism about the future of sub- Saharan Africa. It contains an excellent description of the problems and more importantly what can and should be done about them as well about the progress being made. Perhaps the Rev Leon is too optimistic but he has backed what look like hopeless cases before and succeeded. That is what moving mountains is all about. A very inspiring book.

American Indians, an impoverished and long overlooked minority group which could benefit from grants made by churches, foundations, and corporate giving programs, finally have a source book which can identify funding sources for their programs. While somewhat dated, this reasonably priced Directory gives ample information and advice on how to apply for grants in each grantmaker profile. This reference should be included in every academic library of a University which is attended by minority students.

Insights on Society by a Visionary Author

Being a Political Scientist I was first skeptical about the content of this tome because of it's title. However, giving an aspiring author a read hass always been a favorite past-time of mine.

If you love the classsic political theory beginning with the Bible down through the Founding Fathers you should really read John Redfern. This book provides new insight into the American if not the human condition that only a visionary like redfern could provide. His concise view of politcal thought is as if it were pulled out of Cliff's Notes and have almost a basic elementry view of the political world.

There has not been such a political view since Pentagon Papers or All the President's Men. This book should be a must read for all political science students if only to show them the right and wrong ways to approach political thought.

Redfern also has a unique way of combining political thought and religious values which are unequaled by any writer today.

There are many who will read this book who might thinks that Redfern's ideas are off base because they are unable to understand this man's views. My advise is to read the book twice to at least understand the full value of this author's views.

This is a book for all ages and I strongly encourage anyone interested in the current state of affairs in the United States to read this book and then make your own decisions.

By getting a copy of this book the nonprofit executive can get a good handle on her organization's financial planning req'ts.

[This review is actually for the Second Edition of this book which I read at B&N on Saturday, February 09, 2008. See ISBN 0471715271.]

This is a gem of a book. I have a financial background, so it was a pretty easy read for me. Like the author I too hold the CPA designation. But unlike the author I don't use that designation professionally any longer. The book has the following 8 chapters:

1. Introductory concepts
2. Structuring the organization for fiscal strength
3. Financing the dream
4. Budgeting
5. Asset management
6. Nonprofit accounting
7. Special financial tools
8. Obtaining and maintaining tax-exempt status

For two years not too long ago I worked as a consultant to nonprofits that needed help with multi-million-dollar capital campaigns. The nonprofit world was new to me then, except for the time I spent in Washington DC a number of years ago as a staff auditor auditing trade associations for E&Y. As a result of my fundraising experiences I found it necessary to read lots of books about aspects of nonprofits. I read books on nonprofit management, nonprofit fundraising, nonprofit capital campaigns, nonprofit endowment campaigns, major gifts, grant proposals and writing, and nonprofit strategic planning.

I didn't read nonprofit books on nonprofit accounting, bookkeeping, or financial planning since I basically knew that stuff. But some people who are not well versed in such subject matter would do themselves a favor to get a copy of Ms. Blazek's book on nonprofit financial planning if they want a well written and well outlined book on the subject. CEOs and CFOs of nonprofits should be adept at their organization's (1) operations, (2) financial planning, and (3) fundraising efforts and abilities. By getting a copy of this book the nonprofit executive can get a good handle on the second leg of the three-legged stool. 5 stars!

This book is about the advice that local public officials receive -- when and why is is good and useful, when and why it is more often not useful and not used. The book is an absolute model of its kind. The author, Peter Szanton, knows his subject very well, has organized his conclusions well, and writes with grace. Superb.
