An excellent UNIX SA resource book

Review Date: 2008-02-03
The intended audience for this book is the seasoned and open minded UNIX SA who has a smattering of understanding the Microsoft way of doing network based file sharing. The book dives right into detailed real world configurations that can be deployed right away. This book proudly sits in my library as one of the most utilitarian pieces of technical literature I own.

A reference book

It is a very well organized book, usable as a reference. However, the lates version of Samba are not cover: a kind of "release notes" would be nice.

Great Configuration guide

A superb book that covers all aspects of samba Config. My only critisism is that it is somewhat out of date (latest Ver 2.05) but that is OK as the principles havent changed much. Combined with the info on the samba site this book is the bible of samba, a must have.

For Microsoft networking gurus only

I do UNIX system administration for my company and I bought this book hoping it would help me offer UNIX printing services to our Windows 95/98 PCs. It was a waste of money. While this book is not terrible, neither is it for everyone. If you do not have a good knowledge of Microsoft networking concepts such as Master Browsers, this book will be as useless to you as it was to me. The explanations of Microsoft networking concepts so ineegral to Samba are very poor in this book. The author basically assumes that you know as much about Windows networking as he does. Example configs are poor and good luck trying to debug any problems you might have. If you don't know what a Domain Master Browser is, you would better off to do what I did and get the new O'Reilly and Associates book _Using Samba_ which does a much better job of explaining everything you need to know to make Samba work.

Excellent! It's EASIER than you THINK!

Samba in a cinch. You pick up this book and within an hour you can have Samba running. There is really nothing to it. John Blair is a member of the Samba team, so he REALLY knows his stuff. He's also a remarkably good technical writer.

All the details are here, and the index is great. If you need something that this book doesn't cover, then you're way beyond me!

Have to setup Samba in a hurry? Overnight this book. The day you get it, flip through it for 10 minutes. Update the SMB.CONF file a bit. You're done - inside an hour - no question.

If you want to get fancy, this book covers that too. I haven't yet seen anything that wasn't in this book. In fact, I've found stuff that was in this book that I couldn't find ANYWHERE else.

Excellent book. Great to learn Samba. Great reference to keep handy afterward. Truly excellent book!

This is a fantasic well written book. I have been using Quickbooks for over 15 years and have gone back and forth with opening my own business. After reading this book from front to back, I am now convinced to start my own company. Very informative. Actually hope Michelle writes another book soon.

I heard others talk about how great this book was, so I had to check it out for myself. I was quite happy when I got my copy and had a chance to review it from cover to cover.

Each chapter stands for itself so you can read it on a 'what is important to you first' basis. Information is well laid out in an easy to read, concise format.

I've been in business for 5 years - I find that the information that Michelle shares is not just for businesses just starting out. I wish that I knew about her book earlier. I purchased a book for myself and one to share, and I'm glad I did.

I've just started my own Bookkeeping/Quickbooks business and was looking for a few good resource books to start my business library. I received this book a few days ago and can't put it down. The amount of information packed into this book is incredible. Michelle did a great job not only addressing the more experienced user but addressing us not so experienced users. It's soup to nuts on starting and building your own business. Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic!

I just started working with QuickBooks about a year ago and just love it. Prior to working with QuickBooks, I worked for a large corporation for 18 years. I finely figured out that I did not want to work with this large of a company any longer and wanted to learn something new and exciting.

That being said, I wish what I have learned in this passed year I could have known 20 years ago. Reading Michelle's book has inspired me to continue learning.

Her book is so friendly, making things easy to understand, without all the 'techie' politics. The one part I most liked was how a client will call and says they have a two second question for me... Boy she sure is right about the fact that there is no such thing as a two second question!

I'm hoping Michelle will write another book in the near future. I will be watching and will be one of the first to buy it.

Thanks Michelle for helping me understand how to be successful with a QuickBooks Consulting business!

I LOVE this book and you will, too! This is not one of those books full of only about 3 useful tidbits of information. Rather, this is jam-packed full of useful and important information for seasoned and new QuickBooks ProAdvisors or those just thinking about starting their own consulting business. I constantly refer back to this book and each time I do, I find something new.
I just became a QuickBooks ProAdvisor this year and this book has been a valuable reference in starting out and continuing along with my business!

Whoever appreciates Peter Drucker als author of 39 books focusing predominantly on the various subjects of management should also read his "Adventures of a Bystander". This book is a very important key to Peter Drucker's development and personality. Add his two novels "The Temptation to Do Good" AND "The Last of all Possible Worlds" and you
will discover Peter Drucker's qualities as excellent novelist. There you will find very important additions to his management thinking and practice in terms of profiles of psychological dynamics of people in action.

Drucker clearly explains how rampant inflation in post WW I Germany influenced the rise of the Nazi party and Hitler. This discussion should be required reading for every 14 year old child! I particularly liked his stories of Willem Paarboom, a sort of Dutch hedge-fund/investment manager who appeared to be a cross between a man and a raven. In his day, Herr Drucker was exposed to some truly elegant and unorthodox thinkers. He adds his own illuminating interpretations and is not afraid to engage in contrary thinking. (Especially when to do so is out of vogue) Read about Dr. Mordecai Johnson and his views on the "American Negro Problem" and you will never contemplate African slavery the same way again. I consider Drucker to be one of the brightest minds of the 20th century, and his genius is on full display here. Certainly, this is one of the most provocative and influential books that I have ever read!

(Drucker particularly liked the "sqwoosh, sqwoosh" sound when jumping in puddles.)

Not really an autobiography, not quite a memoir, part biography, of the people he has known in his life, some famous, some not. And Drucker is still alive, now 95 years old. It was a dense, fact-filled book, but always fascinating. He is an amazingly prolific, gifted, engaging writer. And what he has to say about America and The American Dream in the last pages of the book is no less true today than it was in the late 70's when it was written. He writes of Sigmund Freud (things you haven't read before), Henry Luce, Alfred Sloan, John L. Lewis, and Buckminster Fuller among a host of other characters. A very rewarding, thought-provoking read. Highly recommended. Especially for those of us who want to read history by the people who lived it.

....every page of this book reward rereading.

Drucker's most captivating book, Adventures of a Bystander, is a dynamic memoir of the singular Americans and Europeans of Drucker's life. They include Fritz Kraemer, the historian who "invented" Henry Kissinger; Reinhold Hensch, a newspaper editor so mediocre his only career path was to become the "monster" of the Third Reich; John L. Lewis, Marshall McLuhan, and the visionary early chiefs of General Motors. (Yes, General Motors.) Most importantly, you meet Peter Drucker, whose offhand insights into the world surrounding his characters make every page of this book reward rereading. ....

Meeting the people Drucker met

Instead of the usual self-focused auto-biography, Drucker introduces us to the people that have shaped him. Some are famous (Bucky Fuller, Marshal Mcluhan) some are not (his elementary school teacher). Some are good, some evil, but they are are worth meeting, especially through Drucker's eyes. A good read.

This is an excellent book! Stanek's Pocket Consultant books go far beyond the typical. He always uses his comprehensive knowledge to weave a fabric that balances the aim of a program with the fiddling details that drive admins crazy. As soon as I had skimmed the IIS book I set it aside and read one section a day. Nothing escapes his eye, every section clears up something that I had always wondered about. Great stuff!

This book is really worth every penny it costs. It is packed with useful information, well written, intelligent, and enjoyable to read. Just the chapters on IIS applications, side by side .NET configurations, and pooling are worth the whole book: it goes through every detail.

The in-depth coverage of every other subject is as accurate as it gets. I particularly appreciated the chapter about customization. But the book goes as far as covering in perfectly understandable terms the metabase, and more. Not to mention the incredibly accurate chapter about optimization.

Excellent beginner to mid-level book

Review Date: 2006-02-07
This is an easy to read book with the detail you would expect from a pocket consultant. The author doesn't waste time with the basic chit-chat and does a good job of laying out the useful material.

Content includes initial setup, backup, performance monitoring/tuning and more advanced features such as registry and metabase settings. Advanced readers will eventually want to search for further information on some of these topics (scripting for example), but this is to be expected. The books leaves you feeling comfortable with what you've learned and with a good feel for where you might want to expand your learning in the future.

Most of my computer books end up getting re-sold or trashed, but I'll be keeping this one on the shelf for myself and others to use in the future.

Great, nitty-gritty book on how to get that next job
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-06-28
Keith Wheelock, Skillman, NJ

Mr. Nielsen has written a marvelous book on the nitty-gritty of how to devise a job search strategy, then, step-by-step, how to customize your search to maximize your opportunities. Though aimed principally at the seasoned professional who is seeking a new job, it is also valuable for the neophyte who can benefit from Mr. Nielsen's uncommonly practical advice.
Perhaps most helpful were over 40 sample cover letters and 50 resumes of diverse thrusts and flavors. Anyone would benefit from this Dutch uncle 'getting started' advice together with the detailed 'what to do' and 'how to customize it to your personal situation' that Mr. Nielsen shares from his decades of experience as a human resources manager and human resources consultant. Buy it, get your job offers, then turn to Chapter 7 to negotiate your best compensation package.

Job Search ideas

Review Date: 2003-01-28
Niels Nielson covers some job search ideas that are very good and not commonly understood or talked about. Anyone who is in job search mode would certainly gain more than one good practical tip from this book.

Niels hits the nail right on the head when he says there is no one right way to get that job. But some of his ideas will surely help everyone.

Samples: 1) your search is a marketing effort. This is little understood by many job seekers and a very useful concept. 2) I had breakfast the other day with a job seeker & I mentioned he might want to get to the local chamber of commerce and other fixed networking functions - a very good idea that Niels covers in this book too - I've never heard anyone else mention chambers of commerce 3) having your 30 second statement prepared in advance 4) approach your job search like a job and work at it. 5) saving job search receipts for taxes

Lots of good model resumes, cover letters, other snippits too. A definite good read - join this with the book "60 seconds & You're Hired" (Robin Ryan); you'll surely have a better handle on getting the right job.

A Unique Job-Searching Process
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-02-03
This is an excellent book on how to find the ideal job and career. It takes a unique view of the process, showing how a job search is like a start up business. The book is in fact a business plan for an "interim entrepreneur" that can be followed until that one ideal customer is landed, the employer. It even has a last chapter on "Customer Relations Management" about how to thrive in your new job.

It also has a full chapter on that most crucial part of the job hunt, compensation. It tell you how to "price" your services, and how to consider and negotiate salary plans, incentives, stock ownership programs, employee benefits, human resources policies, and perks. The book shows you how to wade through all the different compensation plans and to negotiate the best deal.

Besides that, there are 40 cover letters and 50 resumes that the author prepared for clients in a wide variety of occupations. They are so good, they are worth the price of the book alone.

Highly recommended!

Princeton Management Consultant's Guide to Your New Job is an important book to add to your library if you're out of work. The author provides concrete advice on how to find a job, using the effective analogy of the job hunting process as an entrepreneurial venture. He guides you through each step of the process, providing concrete details and practical advice. His many years of consulting experience are also apparent because of his obvious compassion for those who have lost their jobs. He is also able to use examples of real-life experiences to illustrate important points. Finally, the abundant examples of resumes and cover letters are very helpful.

Why Didn't I Think of This?

I have read a lot of job search, resume-writing and networking books in my time. I have given seminars on all these topics; and I think this approach gets to the heart of the matter! Why didn't anyone write this before? Well, most of us don't want to think about "selling" ourselves. The job search must be strategic as well as tactical. Considering the stress of looking for a job, thank goodness Niels Nielsen gives the reader a step-by-step plan. The approach is unique, focused, and immediately useful. There are many parts of "Guide to Your New Job" I thought were powerful. Niels includes a large variety of cover letters and resumes that model creativity and assertiveness. Well-written by jobseekers, these examples are excellent guideposts for the reader. I really like the way questions were used in the cover letters. And what a great idea, "the 15-second elevator speech". All I can say is, this book should be in the hands and heart of every jobseeker.

This was my first wine book, and it is still the best beginner's reference. It covers everything you need to get started. The real benefit, however, is the audio format. You actually get to hear the narrator (who is fantastic!) pronounce the names of the various grape varieties, wines and terms. This is a huge benefit and something that cannot be replicated in the written word.

A good etiquette book should sit on every professional's bookshelf alongside "how to win friends" and "7 habits." I purchased this book along with Essential Etiquette Fundamentals, Vol. 1: Dining Etiquette and The Etiquette Edge: The Unspoken Rules for Business Success to cover all the bases. These books do an excellent job covering the important etiquette skills often overlooked in today's environment. Although often underappreciated, exhibiting proper etiquette signals to others (especially your boss and clients) that you are well educated, care about detail, and have respect for others. I highly recommend these books for anyone new to the business world or for those of us who may need to brush up on the basics.

Excellent Resource For Novice Wine Drinkers

Review Date: 2008-02-17
Although drinking good wine isn't difficult, learning about wine can be. Once on a winery tour a vintner explained that there are 15,000 different choices that can be made from grape to bottle. Sometimes picking out a wine can seem daunting. Food Scholar's Wine Selection & Etiquette does a superior job of teaching those of us who would like to learn more without the information being overkill.

While there are more comprehensive books out there on Wine, I really like this book because it excels at being written for the average person. The book is divided into logical sections. I also like that the effect of climates in a region on the grape are covered. This is an easy way to tell what kind of wine you are getting just by looking at where the grape was grown.

This book will enhance your knowledge as well as your ability to pick out wines that you and your guests may enjoy. I would highly recommend this book to those who want to learn about wine, as this book does an excellent job of giving a basic education about many of the wines of the world.

This book is a fun read, as well as a concise, comprehensive resource for the aspiring LNC.
I was amused, educated, and inspired, to continue my pursuit in this area of nursing.
After the discussion regarding the need for writing well to capture and satisfy a client, however, I was a little disappointed that, in editing, many "typos" were overlooked.
Ah, but in this new computer assisted age, that is certainly possible.
For potential buyers, though- do not let that stop you from using this book. Many thanks to the "Team Joos"!

I have given several of these as gifts to friends of a more scientific mindset, and they love it. They can pick it up and identify that odd thing over the mountain, and the haze around the moon. I have also used it many times for work. I can show a Director this book and he/she can say "I want that kind of sky!". Sure beats trying to create a sky from some vague mis-informed description of clouds they say years ago! I am about to give a copy to a director I'm working with right now, and that's why I'm here: to order it!. He loved the book today when I pushed it across the tabe to him, and it helped flag the clouds we'll use in his commercial. I recemmend it to anyone of a curious mindset, or for professional art direction. High quality binding too!

I believe this book was previously known as the Field Guide to Clouds, not sure exactly when the change took place but I'm glad to have finally re-found this book. What first allured me to this series when I was a child were the amazing photographs in the middle. Some very rare species of clouds all beautifully captured. The information contained within this book is very well organised, and as said in the title it fully lives up to its field guide reputation. By identifying the clouds you see in the sky via the photographs you can then follow the page number to the description of the formation and what weather you can expect from it. Alternatively, there are essays in the beginning describing several weather phenomenon and their life cycles, where they can be expected in North America and much much more.

This is a fantastic book for anyone interested in weather and particularly clouds. While made with North America in mind, anyone could enjoy this book especially the brilliant photography included with it.

What I find very valuable about this book is the fact that it is loaded with illustrations of different kinds of meteorological phenomena. For a pilot, it is important to understand what sort of weather you are going to be flying into. If you don't spend a lot of time studying meteorology, it can be difficult to conceptualize what kind of cloud formation is ahead of you. Some of the pilots' literature have rather weak illustrations.

This book is an excellent supplement to any pilot's training manual in providing visual aids for learning about spotting weather phenomnena.

Also, in general, it is very enjoyable to page through the book, as the quality of photography is very good.
