Superb organization and presentation style
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1998-09-15
Contemporary Systems Analysis is a comprehensive introduction into the full life cycle of software and systems development. The cycle, abbreviated SDLC, goes from study through design and implementation to changeover and normal operation. Throughout the book an On-Line Accounts Receivable system is the example. The authors stress the importance of meeting the needs of the principal user and of very complete documentation.

The 19 chapters are divided into 6 Units that seem quite suitable for a two-semester, college level course. All the chapters begin with a preview, a list of learning objectives, and a list of key terms. The chapters end with a summary, discussion topics, and exercises.

The book gives full treatment to Data Flow diagrams, HIPO, OOD, Gantt, PERT, forms design, user interface issues, schedule/cost issues, presentations, reviews, database file normalization, and the list goes on.

Because of the organization and style, it is relatively easy to learn the subject material.

Highly recommended for software/systems project managers.

A superbly practical and comprehensive guide - cogent and succinct but thorough. Having just gone through an office disaster similar to worked examples and real life situations presented in the book, incurring tens of thousands of dollars of damages and subsequent insurance claims, I can highly recommend this book as a must read for prevention purposes and a user-friendly guide for when it happens to you. I never thought I would need it, and was so grateful to have a copy on hand to reassure my decision-making in working through all the clean-up afterwards. It is an excellent resource not only for small businesses, but also for any office situation - non-profits, community groups, churches, synagogues etc.

Critical approach to contract law

Review Date: 2000-05-24
The choice of books on contract law for students and practitioners is divided in the main between straightforward text/case books and secondary commentaries. John takes us in a new direction, lifting the skirts on the subject in the tradition of critical legal scholarship. As entertaining as it is stimulating and informative.

Using collaboration to meet the challenge of conflicts.
Helpful Votes: 22 out of 23 total.
Review Date: 1999-03-02
This work offers an approach to controlling costs through building collaborative strength for prevention and early intervention. The authors show that there are four basic approaches, each appropriate in given circumstances, but only one-collaboration-that holds the potential of win-win outcomes. However, most organizations over-use approaches that employ avoidance, authority and power, which tend to prove costly, rather than develop and employ systems that promote collaborative resolution and end conflicts from escalating into expensive disputes. The authors take a highly realistic approach to their subject. The book is rich in substantive ideas and method. It provides detailed guidelines for building a system and applying the principles the authors champion. An excellent contribution, worthy of your attention.

A good reference to the bundle method
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-27
Lemarechal and Kiwiel introduced the bundle method in the 80's as a means to optimise nonsmooth convex functions. Recently Christoph Helmberg developed a spectral bundle approach to solving semidefinite programs, by rewriting SDP's with a constant trace as eigenvalue optimisation problems. The Spectral bundle methods outperforms the traditional interior point approaches to SDP's as these methods are typically unable to handle large SDP's with a large number of constraints.

This book provides a detailed description of the bundle method for nondifferentiable optimisation. I am going to purchase a copy of this book (I already have volume one with me) and can only strongly recommend the book to anyone interested in nondifferentiable optimisation and semidefinite programming.
