This book is perfectly focused on the intention of setting Public Wi-Fi Hotspots. By this I mean that the book doesn't load you down with all the technical details of how wireless networks work, but instead dives right into the business/organizational benefits of running such a network as a hotspot. There is a very brief chapter at the end that gives an overview of RF or wireless signals (literally 14 pages) and this is perfect. Great job staying on focus.

The book presents the implementation of Wi-Fi Hotspots from start-to-finish covering these topics:

-Why Implement a Hotspot
-Simple Quick-Install Hotspots
-Adcvanced Hotspot technologies
-Marketing your hotspot
-Avoiding freeloaders who consume your bandwidth
-Common problems and resolutions
-Hotspot safety and security

...among others. If you are considering implementing a hotspot for pay or for marketing purposes, this book is a great place to start. -Tom Carpenter, Author: Wireless# Certification Official Study Guide, CWNA Certification Official Study Guide 4th Edition, CWSP Certification Official Study Guide 2nd Edition

Perhaps outdated but offering ample food for thought is Sean Melvin's Y2K Business & Legal Survival Guide, which deals with handling the legal aspects of Y2K-related claims. The explanations of liability and computer law still apply.

A necessary evil for every medical practice
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1999-06-16
I knew going into this book that we had to do something to prepare our practice for Y2K but thought that the majority of problems were isolated to our internal systems. After reading through this manual, my eyes were opened to the real problems that we face. Sure, our own computers and systems still need to be tested but it is our ability to respond to issues that develop with outside dependecies that will make the difference between success and failure next year. I never considered many of the ideas or solutions that are offered in this book. I am grateful for reading it and feel much more confident in our ability to move ahead. This is not a technical manual but rather a common sense business approach to an unavoidable problem.

The only book to address the real problem in the practice

My initial thought when I bought the book was this was going to be another `big picture' view of the whole crisis. I was wrong, and glad I was. This is not a book, but rather a complete operational manual for getting to the heart of the solution, not the problem. It addresses areas that I never considered, such as the infra-structural and operational component of the practice. I really thought that since we had our computers Y2K ready, our practice was ready, too. This was far from the truth and I am grateful I found out the facts and the solutions before I put the whole issue to bed. I highly recommend this `manual' for every medical practice. I learned two very important points that every practice should realize. First, no medical practice will be free of the possible problems and second, lack of proper preparation is the only disaster waiting to happen.

In teaching a university seminar on the technical and management aspects of the Year 2000 problem, I found the 1997 book THE YEAR 2000 PROBLEM SOLVER, by Bryce Ragland to be invaluable! Not only is the necessary information complete, the writing is so clear and the organization so lucid that the most distracted and harried student can easily follow and keep up. I am glad to hear that this book is being translated into languages other than English -- Y2K is a global problem, and Mr. Ragland's book will surely help to control it.

Dr. Jone's Year 2000 Software Crisis - Solutions for IBM Legacy Systems is a must have tool for anyone arming themselves for Y2K work for the next few years. The tools on the CD-ROM and cited examples will make your life much easier in dealing with the current crisis.

This book is one of the most comprehensive on the market covering most topics you will need in your Y2K endeavor. Thanks Kieth for opening my eyes on a few of the topics you covered..

This book arms one with both the methodology and the tools needed for completing a Y2K project successfully. The comprehensive reviews of the leading tools is a big plus. Also, the features you should look for in a particular tool category are documented, making tool selection easy. I found the cost estimation models particularly useful. In short a must-buy for Y2Kers !

Valuable if you have done this before, not for beginner

This is a difficult book to review because you can look at it as a strategic planning project package or an engagement manual for strategic planning consulting practices. Let's start with what it is not: it is not a "how to" guide for someone who has never done strategic planning. The instructions are too sparse for that. In the hands of someone who has done strategic planning and has a few such projects under their belt this book and accompanying diskette of files is a valuable roadmap to performing a thorough strategic planning project. The files, in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access formats, comprise a ready-made set of tools with which to go about the task.

The main part of the book is a set of guidelines and worksheets for an 11-step strategic planning process. The steps are: (1) performing internal and industry assessments, (2) technology assessment, (3) defining the system and technology architecture, (4) developing the plan, (5) developing individual strategic plans for business process areas, (6) presenting the plan, (7) marketing the plan internally, (8) setting the project slate, (9)implementing the plan's recommendations, (10) measuring the results, and (11) updating the plan.

As someone who has done this kind of work, most recently for a large Middle Eastern oil company, I can attest that the approach laid out in the book is straightforward and thorough. Unfortunately I did not have this book when I embarked on the project. The identified tasks and deliverables outlined in the book and the accompanying forms and templates would have significantly reduced the time it took to complete the project. One of the most valuable files is the Access database, which comes with pre-defined tables and reports with which to track issues, tasks and deliverables.

Although this is not a "how to" book for inexperienced consultants, the authors did include a large number of small case studies to illustrate certain points. I learned a lot from them and think that they added a touch of wisdom that comes from the authors' collective experience.

If you have one or more strategic planning projects under your belt this book will be one of the most valuable assets on your book shelf. If you are starting out you might find the book frustrating because it assumes that you can fill in the blanks between the sparsely worded (but highly insightful) instructions. I highly recommend this book to the former group and give it 5 stars for the amazing amount of value packed in its 397 pages and floppy diskette.
