A tremendous discussion and reference of the nuts and bolts for all kinds of teaming in the IT world. It's loaded with nuances related to teaming that you won't easily find in one place. It's also a good review, thinker, and is exceptionally well researched and written. I definitely reccomend this book to anyone who is serious about adding to their skills in this often overlooked but necessary specialty.

This book is a comprehensive analysis of the points throughout development life cycles where team collaboration is appropriate for creating deliverables. Formats and methods for conducting team workshops are set out in great detail, based on the organizational environment, project type, end result desired, and particular phase of the life cycle. Jones proposes a "framework" for development which he calls Team Design and which he contrasts with Joint Application Development (JAD) and other group methods. Jones defines five Formats (Business Process Design, Requirements Definition, Application Design, Team Planning, Decision Making) under which almost any development project or part thereof can be placed. He devotes separate chapters to each Format, defining for each Format the life-cycle steps within the Format, the workshop agenda activities that apply to each phase of the life-cycle, and recommended workshop methods (e.g., brainstorming, scoping diagrams, scenario analysis) that can develop the deliverables for the phase. Team Design comprises a generic set of life-cycle Phases (Initiating, Scoping, Visualizing, Usage, Packaging, Validating) that can be mapped to each of the five Formats. For each Phase, Jones then recommends certain workshop methods that can be used regardless of the Format. This allows flexibility in analyzing all the factors facing a Project Manager and Facilitator (organization type, project type, end result, life-cycle phase) and adapting a workshop plan that will apply best. It also allows for bridging of experience with workshop methods across different Formats. Jones also deals in depth with a wide variety of topics related to team-based development, including: · JAD and Participatory Design: A survey of the history of these two group-based methods, and an assessment of their strengths and weaknesses in various environments · Facilitation: The scope of Facilitation; the technical competencies required of a Facilitator in a development environment; in-depth description of facilitation tools (e.g., conflict resolution, problem solving) and workshop methods (e.g., brainstorming, diagramming, Pareto charts), and their applicability · Requirements: Analysis of the major problems faced by organizations in creating and managing requirements, and how Team Design can address those problems · Team Dynamics: The phases of team development; team-building techniques; special issues involving workgroups comprising members with different functional backgrounds · Organizational Culture: The impact of organizational dynamics on a company's receptiveness to structured methods and team-based approaches to development

A comprehensive career guide and a job locator for health care jobs

The new fourth edition of "Health Care Job Explosion!: High Growth Health Care Careers and Job Locator" is a brand new comprehensive career guide and a job locator for health care jobs. Health career data can be accessed at multiple internet sites, with one created especially for this book (http://healthcarejobs.org). The book is very user-friendly and is conveniently organized into 10 chapters. The first, "the Health Care Explosion," is an overview, while the second, "the Nexus - Making a Connection," is helpful to increase chances of obtaining the desired job. Chapter three, "Job Sources for Everyone," is an invaluable key to many resources, including job advertising services, job fairs, job hotlines, internet sites, associations and directories. It even includes pages on the Internet, Surfing lessons, LIST SERVERS, search engines, and education and career resources. A handy system of symbols connects the reader to the desired resource. Chapters four through ten cover general health care job areas, from health technologists and technicians to dietetics, pharmacy, therapy, nursing, health and social services, health diagnosing occupations and assistants, and home health care jobs. Each of these chapters begins with an interview with a practicing health care worker in the listed field. Job descriptions include significant points, a description of the nature of the work, working conditions, training, qualifications and advancement, job outlook, earnings, and related occupations. This is followed by an exhaustive listing of additional special resources pertaining to that occupation/area, again using the helpful icons established in chapter 3. Finally, Appendices A and B present information about health care corporations and sources for tuition and scholarships for specialized health care job training. "Health Care Job Explosion!" is an updated resource that will serve all who seek to build a career in one of the many areas related to health care in the United States. It would be a valued addition to the shelves of libraries and education institutions.

I knew I needed a change in life and a new career. But I new it needed to be something that paid decent and would give me job security. So I bought this book, read about the different fields and then handed it over to my teenage daughter to get her thinking about her future....This book guided me in the right direction and now I am in school and will graduate in early 2008. I will have job security and a decent salary until I retire. If you are interested in the medical field then this book is a great guide in helping you decide what you would like to do and how much education you need, where to go to school and what exams you must pass. Great book for those looking for a career change or just thinking of trying something else in life.

An excellent analysis of the 36 stratagems, particularly as they apply to business, that is highly readable. If you are a fan of Sun Tzu's "The Art of War", you will find this book invaluable. The author translates contemporary business strategies into the appropriate stratagems. He outlines approaches based on the 36 stratagems in a very accessible fashion. A must read for anyone who owns a company, or is responsible for growth.

An excellent and profound work! The author takes the interpretation of ancient Chinese wisdom on strategy to an unprecedented, in my opinion, level and makes it immediately relevant to western management. The abundance of cases studies with real companies sets the book apart from other works in this area. The author masterfully applies the abstract language of the 36 Stratagems in the context of modern business strategy and illustrates it with what it seems like hundreds of specific examples. As a business professional myself I can attest that this certainly adds tremendous credibility and real value. I think this book is a treasure for both the academic scholars and business executives, as it offers a body of sound research, as well as a specific guidance to action. I highly recommend this book!

A brilliant guide to strategic thinking!!

At first the title made me think this was another Sun Tzu kill-your-competition but, but it actually is a more profound and sophisticated explanation of ancient Taoist concepts and how they apply to business and creativity in the modern world of business. The book is a good read straight through, or if you prefer, read it more slowly and really contemplate the application of the stratagems as part of your daily life. I found the material to be profound enough to really make in impact in the way that I see the playing field in my business. This is a must read for people with a keen interest in developing their strategic thinking capacity. I'm ready for the next book by the author!!

I am very familiar with Homework Rules and Homework Tools. The book makes sense. It
can be the foundation for building homework policies in school and at home.
The unique thing about the Rules and Tools book is the author provides
ongoing support. Your staff is not left out in the cold after they read the
book. They can actually get their questions answered by Dr. Wendt on an as
needed basis. This book is a "must have" for teachers administrators and
parents. Our Middle School PTA representatives have taken a real interest in
the Rules and Tools approach.

I have a son who is intelligent, but who lacks the motivation to reach his potential. I've tried a number of things to get this kid to complete his assignments and begged him to pay attention in class. His teacher knew his potential but was unable to draw it out of him as well. I bought the book, studied it closely, implemented many of the ideas and my son's performance in school has been absolutely refreshing. The techniques for getting him to do his homework worked plus - now that he's spent some time on the schoolwork, he's actually found that some of it's actually interesting. Many thanks to the author for his work in this field. Our family thanks you.

As principal of a school for students with disabilities- learning and emotional, I am always looking for new information- research-based, that I can pass along to the teachers and parents of my students. The number one problem faced by these folks is the dilemna of getting these students to do their homework! The bottom line that if a child does his homework, he will pass. If he does not, he will most likely fail. There have been some books written about how to get children to complete this task, and I have read all of them. However, they all lack one key component: they see the lack of homework completion as an academic task...Mr. Wendt, in his book, sees it as as a disciplinary problem, which may be due in part to the lack of control the parent has over the child. Mr. Wendt, whom I have had the pleasure of listening to on one of his speaking engagements, helps the parent gain control of not just the homework problem, but of the home as well. His book could be called a "throw back" to the days when the children listened to and respected authority. Instead of taking away things from the child, when they do not complete their tasks, give them things...like more work to do. Keep them busy! When one thinks about this simple strategy, it may sound backwards, but how many times have you, as a parent, taken away something from your child, only to have them shrug and say, "I don't care"? The practical, common sense and easy to follow approaches outlined in this book are a marvel! As an educator, I wonder why I didn't of these strategies myself. I bought 10 books after I heard Mr. Wendt speak, and gave them to parents who I felt needed the support. Seven of those 10 have called to personally thank me for this fountain of wisdom, and have noted a dramatic imporvement in their homes- both academically and behaviorally. What I like the most about this book is that it puts the burden on the CHILD to do the work, not the parent. This is something that will help the child well after he graduates from school. These are called life skills, and as one who works with children on a daily basis, there are not many parents or children who could not benefit from the great ideas in this book!

To the naysayers and the non-believers, this book is the convincing testament that it is unquestionably possible to BEAT THE STOCK MARKET without a single shred of doubt. Moreover, not only is it possible but also quite feasible for ANY TRADERS who are supremely discipline in their trading operations to achieve their wildest trading euphoria. If you identify yourselves as strong opponents of Efficient Market Hypothesis Theorists and Random Walkers and truly desire to knock out the stock market BIG in its own ring, you owe to yourselves to carefully read and study this book several times(at least three times).

Having read every book I could find on all aspects of trading and investing, I have retained only seven books as lasting inspirations on my 'trading bookshelf'. This book is one of them, and it has also been one of the major inspirations behind the writing of my own stock trading book. If you ignore the 'old world' aspects -- i.e. his trading by 'telegram' -- you will find that the underlying trading lessons are timeless.

How did a professional dancer start out with a few thousand dollars and a few years later end up with $2,000,000($13,000,000 adjusted for inflation), getting out of the market right before a bear market crushed the prices? Nick Darvas started out with no knowledge and learned from scratch going through the normal phases most go through. First gambling on stocks through tips, and random choice. After that not working he tried the value approach investing in companies with great balance sheets and P/E ratios versus other stocks. After all his frustration he just started buying companies that advanced in price and reached all time highs after forming solid price bases. This worked, he would place buy-stops on stocks for when they broke out of there boxes and would use trailing stops to allow them to run. He stayed away from rumors and the market while it was open and only bet on the winning stocks. I have made $1,000s when I have traded like Darvas. He is one of the models that William O'Neal used to build the IBD system which has been successful for numerous investors. Buy this book and use the mehtods, I have a a trading account that proves it works.

Here are the main points of his system:
1). ALWAYS have a stop loss order in place when you buy stocks, about $1.50 to $2.00 under your purchase price, this safeguards you against the huge losses people experience in a bear market.
2). Watch unexpected volume surges in stocks that push the price up, this is a sign that other investors know something that you do not.You can partner with insiders and people in the know with out knowing what is really driving the price.
3). Never sell a stock that is rising in price.Only sell on declines.
4). Watch price boxes that develop in stocks, if a stock is trading at $66 to $70 for 6 months then suddenly goes to $72 it is likely the sign of a new price range box, buy at break outs.
5). Take emotion out of tading set your rules and follow them.
6). Stay away from the rumors and mob mentality of Wall Street, get your information from IBD weekly on Monday (darvas used Barron's)and daily quotes, everything else just leads to confusion.
7). Watch stock prices and go with the patterns you watch develop.
8). Look for the break away stocks that will make you rich, trade the stocks that are at their 52 week high if they are growth stocks and if they appear to be breaking new highs.

Darvas has an entertaining writing style and gets to the point. 5 strong stars.

The editors do a great job taking writings from diverse journals and magazines and putting them into a great anthology.

One subject area flows well into the next, and we are brought further and further down the road of a very terrifying trend in modern capitalism.

Even if your goal is to become a CEO, read this to understand just how corrupt and twisted is modern business. Read it to understand what kind of pact you are making with Satan.

As a former corporate CEO and advocate for getting special interest money out of our political system, I found this supporting my goals and was naturally drawn to it. It contains many essays adding weight to the subject.

Campaign funding allows corporations to get away with murder (sometimes literally) and it's just a matter of time before the public rebels strongly enough by throwing the current breed of politicians out. This book gives them reason to make that sooner rather than later.

This is a collection of articles brilliantly composed. Factual quality and research depth reflected by these well-written articles are impressive and respectable. A light touch humor made the reading even more enjoyable - at least for those who are not offended by the truth about corporate America.

From global warming issue to deceptive schemes in marketing strategies, the over-the-law and Enron-flavored attitudes of corporate Ameica were finally addressed and brought to the attention of the public. This book deserves to be a part of all students' education and thus, should be introduced to all highschool and college students. My 16-year-old really enjoyed the book and has lent it out to many friends.

Review Date: 2001-04-21
This is one of several excellent volumes in the University of Michigan Business School Management Series in which the authors provide a cohesive, comprehensive, cost-effective customer measurement and management system which consists of five separate but related stages. Specifically, they explain:

? How to identify the system?s purpose and goals, deciding which customers to include and how to group them into natural segments that reflect their interests and purchasing patterns

? How to use qualitative research to build the ?lens of the customer?, a model of customer views of the products and services that you provide, customer satisfaction, and the loyalty and retention that result

? How to use the lens of the customer to build a customer survey to measure quality, satisfaction, and loyalty

? How to use the lens again in analyzing data from the customer survey, both to determine what could be done to improve customer satisfaction and to assess the probable effect of each potential improvement on bottom-line financial performance

? How to set priorities for quality improvement, using the information developed from the survey as background for business decisions, and then implement the decisions according to the priorities set by management

Whew! That?s a lot! Fortunately, Johnson and Gustafsson devote a separate chapter to each of the five stages of the process.. They also provide three valuable appendices: A mini-case study of the Ratorp Tire Company, the NACS Customer Satisfaction Survey, and a Data Analysis in Practice. If your organization needs to improve customer satisfaction, loyalty, and profit, here is an excellent source.

This is a great book for people who have always wanted to be actionable in analyzing customer satisfaction and loyalty data to make strategic decisions. The book provides concrete examples with real data to step you through in building satisfaction models that lead to bottom line performance. It is extremely well written for a broad range of audience from the novist to the experts. This book not only provides you with the necessary tools to run models but also explains in an easy to understand manner the underlying reasons and background as to how customer satisfaction and loyalty models should be approached. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who desires to have the ability to actually run customer satisfaction models and make intelligent interpretation and executive decisions.

This book focuses on linking customers' needs with a company's processes to create the best customer experience possible. The book outlines a five-stage process to create this link and thereby improves customer satisfaction, loyalty and profit.

Stage 1: Identify the system's purpose and goals. Create a customer measurement and management system to analyze and understand the company's entire system for generating profit.
Stage 2: Utilizing qualitative research, a model of customer views of products and services offered customer satisfaction, and loyalty and retention. This stage shifts the focus from the company's perspective to the customer's perspective.
Stage 3: Design a customer survey using the lens of the customer created in Stage 2 to measure loyalty, quality, and satisfaction. Various survey formats are presented.
Stage 4: The survey results are analyzed utilizing advanced statistical methods to figure out what can be done to improve customer satisfaction and to assess the impact actions will have on revenue.
Stage 5: Based on the impact actions will have on the bottom line, priorities will be set to improve quality. This system will make a direct link between quality, loyalty, satisfaction, and profit. The system allows for the user to continually review and assess quality.

The world continues to converge day by day, and this "revolutionary" perspective, as Koelsch rightly worded the emerging convergence in one word, amazes everyone, everywhere, everytime.

A glance at the contents gives a feel of what is this all about:

This is definitely an excellent reference book on the security systems subject. I especially liked to see sections on TCP/IP and wireless communications, which are typically not areas of expertise of a security systems specialist (even some younger ones).
Maximum value for money, I must say.

The one objection I have is the misaligned print in the first 100 pages or so. But this definitely has nothing to do with the contents. The book is entirely readable, that's important.

In his first book "Internal Quality System Audits" (no longer in print) Mr. Lewis identified the basic fundamental auditing skills and techniques needed to ensure effective and efficient development, implementation and maintenance of "value added" internal auditing capabilities. Our internal auditing operations have been in place for over four years now and I still find myself referring to this book for guidance on regular bases. It is the most dog-eared of all my books on quality and quality operating systems.

His second book "Internal Quality Systems Auditing" includes and builds on these proven methodologies and has now replaced its dog-eared predecessor as my desk reference. The updated sections on development of audit programs and checklists, documenting audit observations and findings, and audit reporting techniques provide the latest guidance for addressing evolving quality system requirements.

The latest edition makes a great reference and helps keep my audit reporting on track.

An excellent teaching tool for internal auditor training.

The "Internal Quality System Audits" book has proven to be a valuable tool for our internal audit team. The guidelines and the checklists have been used by our company from the beginning of our ISO program, and all seven of our internal auditors have accomplished top quality audits with skill and confidence.

"Internal Quality System Audits" is an excellent teaching tool for internal auditor training.

A true "how-to" desk level document.

As a certified quality system auditor and contracted ISO 9000/QS 9000 quality systems consultant I use the auditing methodoligies, tools and techniques presented in this book when establishing internal auditing operations for my clients. I also use the book as a desk referencs when functioning as their lead internal auditor.

If your goal is to develop, implement and maintain an effective and efficient internal audit operation this book is a must have. Internal Quality Systems Auditing is truly a "how-to" presentation.
