This is a great book to have to help fill out the Latin American section of your children's library. This is a more advanced read (4th-6th graders), but is worth having. Very up to date info and photos are clear and interesting to look at. This book is honest about the problems of Honduras as well as showing what a beautiful country it truly is!

The most comprehensive, accurate and thoughtful guide to the Bay Islands available to the cruising sailor. Well researched and well written. The charts, while accurate and plentiful, need work. I hope to see more areas covered by Capt. Rhodes in the future.

THis book is another triumph for Dr. Dent. It is a sweeping survey of problem areas in Latin America for U.S. foreign policy(as well as a trenchant critique of same). EVERY College library should have a copy. Might not the publisher also issue a paperback edition for students and college courses? Both the specialist and the general reader shall find a wealth of valuable information. Most highly recommended!

THE THREE BALORDI

Absolutely, the most interesting book ever written about three Florentines who have given big contribution to the discovery and development of the New World. I have met both authors, I have asked to the young Iacopo Gori, more than once, which of the three characters described in the book have captured the most his interest, while writing. Well, the answer I got was always some how different and interesting. The reason is in the book, which is well written and it is easy and pleasant to read also for non historians. You do not get annoyed, but fascinated with all the events, travelling on the boat with Amerigo Vespucci and Giovanni da Verrazzano or in the mind of Filippo Mazzei and most of all in the mind of Iacopo Gori. Recommended for all, left or right oriented.

A very revealing comparative look at 18th century Latin American economic history and specifically Brazil's and Mexico's. The authors reject the traditional dependency explanation and instead explore the issue with a methodology grounded firmly in empiricism and neo-classical economic theory. Thoroughly researched (primary research predominates), the authors' conclusions, in total, are quite compelling.

Latin America comes alive through individual lives.

This book is an outstanding teaching tool for the undergraduate classroom, and a fine introduction to Latin American history for educated laypersons. The individual biographies cover a wide range of historical experiences, but share the unity of revealing the lives of ordinary Latin Americans from c.1800 to the 1980s. Castro, Pele, Evita & Juan Peron, etc. are not here, but the subjects are just as interesting & perhaps more representative. It is well-balanced according to gender, though coverage of individual countries is less so, with Mexico & Brazil well-represented, others less & many not at all. The level of scholarship is consistently high, and just as important, the contributors all write in an engaging & accessible style. Minor criticisms include the lack of any maps & portraits of the subjects, & much less full treatment of Latin American Indians. Further, since this work was boiled down from two larger works (19th & 20th centuries), there are fascinating lives which had to be excluded; personally I would have retained 3-5 more chapters & still kept it under c.350 pages. But one can always quibble.... Also regrettably, co-editors Judith Ewell & William Beezley--who treats his students to "Hawaiian Shirt Day" for extra credit!--justly point out the importance of humor in their intro., but have deleted many of the more exemplary chapters of that kind. Nevertheless, for many kinds of readers, "Human Tradition" is both a pleasure & a treasure.
