Essential item for Corporate Finance or Real Estate Classes
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-17
This book is an essential tool for corporate finance classes. While the textbook that I used, "Corporate Finance" by Stephen Ross, Westerfield and Jaffe was clear and concise, it did not give any instructions on solving the problems in any way except algebraically. Calculators are an essential tool and if you need any help in connecting those formulas to calculator inputs, this is your guide.

The book is short, but sweet. It includes instructions and line by line inputs for HP 10BII and two other basic models.

You learn how to calculate the basics of NPV, Bonds & Stocks, Mortgages, and Statistics using your particular brand of calculator.

The book is an excellent value for the money!

Great Time Saver. Worth Every Penny
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-03
I manage a mid-size Not-For-Profit organization. Because it is
relatively new, the number of Financial and Administrative Polices and
Procedures it operates under is limited. I was truly delighted when I came across
this manual. In particular, the section on "FINANCIAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES" was just what I was looking for!

When I made the purchase I didn't even know I was also entitled to a free download of the
product. This was a great time saver when modifying a Policy or
Procedure. Now all I do is load the relevant form, fill in the numbers and run it off!

This product is a must have for any small to mid size Not-For-Profit!

I only used the second half of this book (CH16-26) for a principles of accounting 2 class so that is all I am reviewing. It covers everything from corporation equity; long-term liabilities and investments; consolidations; international transactions; cash flows; managerial accounting concepts and principles; budgeting; manufacturing costing (job order, process and standard); annual reports; cost-volume-profit relationships; differential analysis and product pricing; capital investment analysis, and responsibility accounting. This book is well-planned and the internet extras are worth it. There are narrated Power Point presentations, as well as check figures for the problems in each chapter. I really like the Excel templates, you can fill in boxes (it will correct automatically and tell you if your answer is right or wrong) then print them from the internet so you don't have to buy the study guide for worksheets. You do not have to have a code to use any of these resources. I am going to hang on to this book to use as a reference as I continue coursework.

An invaluable resource

This is an invaluable book for business consultants, executive management, process analysts and IT professionals. Part I provides keen insights about the subtle and not-so-subtle differences between today's economic situation that has been changed dramatically by the Internet and e-commerce, and the "old" economy that is characterized by bricks and mortar and traditional distribution. The heart of this book is Part II, which provides metrics and indicators that need to be considered in today's competitive environment. In particular, the process metrics and transaction cycles that the author provides need to be carefully considered because they represent realities of competitively doing business in an e-commerce setting. This material will directly benefit process analysts and business process owners who are tasked with realigning their operations with systems that support e-commerce. Moreover, this information will also provide a solid foundation for IT analysts and architects who need to understand the business and functional requirements of systems they will be designing to support e-commerce. Another benefit that this book will provide is a method for performing an accurate cost/benefit analysis of any system or reengineering initiative that is undertaken to support business and IT alignment for e-commerce. I strongly recommend augmenting this excellent book with "Internet Commerce Metrics and Models in the New Era of Accountability" by Sri Jagannathan, which is a compendium of models and metrics that complement and validate the information in this book.

This book was a fairly decent introduction to financial econometrics. While some of the things in the book are dated, the intent behind the book was noble one. It is probably the most accessible book out there dealing with financial econometrics. (...)

Very good introductory text
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-23
This is definitely for upper undergraduates or introductory graduates. Although concise, this book covers key topics that are essential for financial economics. This book is not a typical book used in finance; it is based on economics perspectives and hence considers equilibrium allocations among agents. It starts with the basic probability theory and property of von Neumann utility function, and then considers the role of various financial institutions in exploring allocations under both symmetric and asymmetric information. Many refer to the LeRoy and Werner book, but for me this book appears a much better introductory text because it provides a holistic view of the discipline in an organized way.

Financial History of Western Europe

An essential reference guide
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2003-12-22
Kindleberger's work on financial history is designed as an undergraduate guide, but such is the wealth of detail and information that it serves as a useful reference tome long after the undergraduate work is completed. Kindleberger takes the reader step by step through the financial issues of the European economy as it developed from feudal to capitalist society. The explanations of the gold versus silver standard debate (bi-metalism) is particularly helpful and clear, given the complexity of the issue. The charting of the relative developments of the UK and Continental financial systems, and the advantages that they gave the British in the nineteenth century, are also well written.

A reader looking for a wealth of data is likely to be disappointed. Figures are provided, but there are other books that will give reams of numbers for the economic historian (several of which are cited by Kindleberger - the references of this book alone are worth buying it for).

Overall, this is widely and rightly regarded as a valuable contribution to the field of economic history.

Financial Independence The Smart Way shows you how to become your own investment manager. If you're looking for advice and an action plan to help you secure your financial freedom, look no further. I found this investment book to be the best I've seen. The author takes a disciplined, systematic approach to investing, guiding you from your personal objectives to suitable investments for your portfolio. It has helped me to sort through the maze of current offerings and develop a well-designed plan for investing. The book shows how to "invest the smart way" and what it takes to be a successful investor. The author explains why its risky to be out of the market. I liked the strategies he offered to become my own investment manager, to plan for a financially secure retirement, to invest online and to protect my capital.

The book is an interesting compilation of essays on financial innovation and the convergence of markets. It takes the reader through diverse structures and strategies to take advantage of capital and insurance markets, and shows the benefits of globalization and disintermediation. I found it very useful for practitioners in finance and risk management and for academics.
