Great book!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-17
This is a great book for anyone trying to learn how to use an office-type software program. What I especially liked about the book was the easy-to-read, hands on lessons that provided a lot of practical knowledge. Although I liked all of the lessons, the three I especially liked were how to create and format a resume, how to create a personal balance sheet and how to use the database application to create a bulk mailing list. When I recently bought my house, the lesson on personal balance sheets not only taught me how to create one for my loan application but also provided some practical advice regarding the need for a personal balance sheet and how to read the data contained within it. Also, whenever I need to look something up for reference purposes, I have found the quick guides in the back of the book to be very helpful.

Making Better Stock Mutual Fund Share Purchases
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-07-26
This book presents a value averaging purchase plan for stock mutual fund shares based on the S&P500 P/E ratio. After presenting background information on P/E ratios, the historical real returns of the S&P500 are presented versus its P/E ratio. The near linear relationship shows that when P/Es are high, ie prices are high, real returns are low. One feature of dollar cost averaging is to buy more shares when prices are low; however, investors can improve upon this by considering the P/E ratio to increase their periodic purchases when P/Es are low and decrease them when it is high. A thorough description of other asset classes and their roles in a portfolio is also provided, including inflation protected instruments.

This book should be required reading of any professional tax adviser. It is very thorough, a bit dry at times, but way better than reading the tax code directly! Mr. Crouch explains exactly what you need to do and why. In addition he provides examples.

A superbly practical and comprehensive guide - cogent and succinct but thorough. Having just gone through an office disaster similar to worked examples and real life situations presented in the book, incurring tens of thousands of dollars of damages and subsequent insurance claims, I can highly recommend this book as a must read for prevention purposes and a user-friendly guide for when it happens to you. I never thought I would need it, and was so grateful to have a copy on hand to reassure my decision-making in working through all the clean-up afterwards. It is an excellent resource not only for small businesses, but also for any office situation - non-profits, community groups, churches, synagogues etc.

Contracting With the Federal Governmernt - 4th Edition
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-29
The publication, while a bit dated (i.e., circa 1998), provides a particularly good mix of general overview of the overall government contracting process and on-point detail with respect to such issues as FAR/DFAR rules and regulations, cost accounting standards, disclosure statements, cost and pricing data and a plethora of other relevant topics. The book was a very good resource, particularly for anyone who is in need of a one-stop guide to a very broad topic.

CPA's opinion of Contractor's Guide to Peachtree Complete
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-19
I consider this book to be the best on the market for teaching contractors how to use Peachtree. It is very clear and includes many illustrations, and is understandable by bookkeepers for whom English is a second language.

This book is noticeably thinner than its sister book "Contractor's Guide to Quickbooks Pro". This makes the book quite a bit more difficult to follow. The book assumes more knowledge of construction accounting than its Quickbooks sister. The job cost and billing sections are difficult to follow if you are not already familiar with construction accounting. If you do have a background in construction accounting, then these sections should be just fine.

This is a great book, but it is not for novices.

Small Contractors Take Heed!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2002-05-24
If you are a small contractor using Quickbooks Pro 2001 or any other version, then this book is for you. In addition to teaching you how to set up your books correctly, it also includes a CD with National Estimator and Job Cost Wizard. These two programs let you create detailed estimates and export them to Quickbooks so that you do not have to retype them saving you hours of time. It's a bargain!
