A new perspective for assessing firm performance

Competing for Customers and Capital is a must read for those in the finance and marketing areas, and especially for those who are, or aspire to be, upper-level managers. Whether you agree with his approach or not, the concepts Cook presents will encourage you to think about the marketing-finance interface in a new and collaborative way. As the first set of chapters is devoted to developing the theoretical constructs used in the book, I would suggest that you begin with chapter 5, read thought to the end and then come back and read chapter 1. Chapters 2 through 4 are not for the quantitatively challenged. For me the book's most evocative idea is illustrated in Chart 1-5, which suggests a much broader and longer term view of the customer as captured by the enterprise marketing concept. Enjoy!

The Complete Guide to Managing A Portfolio of Mutual Funds

Excellent Book For Beginners And Gurus
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2001-11-17
Managing a Portfolio of Mutual Funds is a well written, entertaining, book that will help anyone better understand money management using Mutual Funds. The book starts with an excellent section on goals and planning, in which Rutherford makes a compelling argument about why this is a critical step towards effective financial management and explains how to best complete and document the plan. He follows this with a discussion of Asset Class Portfolio Design, which is the foundation for the rest of the book. Once this introductory material is finished, Rutherford discusses various investment strategies and how to implement and monitor each of them, starting from the more basic ideas of Passive Investing and Index Funds and moving to the more complex areas of Active Investing and Manager Style Analysis. Although the amount of detail gets a bit thin once he begins the chapter on Passive Investing and the book never regains the tight, lucid arguments and explanations of the first sections, it's a first-rate book on investing with Mutual Funds and should be read by every serious investor AND portfolio manager.

Excellent overview of complicated law

Professor Stephen Bainbridge's "Complete Guide to Sarbanes-Oxley" is a well-written, well-organized overview of a very complicated, very intrusive piece of federal legislation. It's as light as possible on the legal-ese, but heavy on the analysis and practical information.

There are two audiences for this important guidebook. First, this is a useful overview for attorneys who need to be "familiar" with Sarbanes Oxley and how this law may affect anyone with a general commercial litigation law practice, or who may represent corporate officers in matters not directly related to corporate governance. This is not meant to be the definitive, comprehensive treatise for big-firm securities lawyers. The prose would need to be too dense to be meaningful for us "dabblers" in corporate law who may occasionally represent a corporate officer.

Second, this is a useful overview for corporate officers, corporate counsel, and accountants. It would serve the same purpose as a traveler's phrase book, allowing you to "speak the language" of securities lawyers and corporate auditors in the event that a "situation" arises. I would even recommend that corporate lawyers, as an act of preventive maintenance, stock a supply of this book to pass out to their clients who are officers of publicly-traded corporations or high-profile non-profits.

If either of these is you, you want this handly summary on your bookshelf.
