An excellent book for actuarial researchers

Review Date: 2008-10-08
First a warning, if you are a student studying to become an actuary, then this book is not for you. I am a lecturer in actuarial studies at an Australian university who teaches students from first year up to Masters level, and most of the content of this book would be way over the heads of my students. Furthermore, I don't even think this book was designed to be used for teaching, as there are no exercises at the end of each chapter, as you would expect in such a book. However, for anyone interested in conducting research into any areas of actuarial science (particularly in general or non-life insurance), then this book is a must.

"Actuarial Modelling of Claim Counts" provides a detailed, yet easy to follow, summary of three major areas in insurance: the modelling of claim counts (including over-dispersion models); experience rating using credibility models; and bonus-malus systems. All concepts are described both using statistical theory and using practical numerical examples, and numerous references are given throughout to allow readers to pursue any of these ideas further if they so desire. If you were conducting research into one of these areas, then it probably would be necessary to look up many of the references given, since there is a limit to the amount of information that can be included in a 356 page book. Nevertheless, the information given is thorough enough so that, if you do need to do further research, then you won't be going into it blind, but armed with a high level understanding of the main points involved. I have just finished a PhD on a topic which included the modelling of claim counts and I wish that I had discovered this book sooner, since this book would have made my research a whole lot easier. I cannot recommend this book enough.

Advanced Fixed Income Analytics (Frank J. Fabozzi Series)

Advanced enough to be controversial.

Dr. Phoa tackles a variety of advanced (occasionally esoteric) topics in Fixed Income. The author manages to describe some fairly complicated math in an intuitive and understandable way, while maintaining some degree of rigor. The field is huge, and in order to cover so much in so few pages, a background in the bond markets is assumed. Excellent discussions on empirical analysis of yield curve movements, valuation of bond options using one- and two-factor interest rate models, and mortgage prepayment modeling are highlights.

As opposed to nearly all other books on Fixed Income Analytics, Phoa presents interpretations of the analysis. The result is much less textbook-like, and much more intellectually engaging. While I do not agree with all of his conclusions, his arguments are well crafted and substantiated.

This books includes alot of great, sound information, and is detailed enough to allow a person to discuss the options with their attorney/CPA. It does not provide enough info to allow the nonprofessional to draft any documents. A little disappointed that nearly all of the wealth transfer techniques deal with CRTs. However, they are described in the context of their application in different scenarios, which provides a clear illustration of their benefits (which are significant). In summary, this book provided a number (about a dozen) great ideas for using ones assets to generate income while alive and transferring the assets to children with reduced estate taxes.

i was using this book for my introduction to information system class at college.

i think this book was very good. i was able to pick up microsoft office (word, excel, project, access, etc) fairly quickly. I think the book does a good job with its exercise and questions.

the only problem i have was with microsoft access. I think the program itself is hard to use though, not necessarily about the style of this book.

A Quick and Dirty Introduction to Accounting Methods
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-07-06
This is one really great book in an impressive series of publications. Everything you need to know to have a passing familiarity with accounting statements is presented in easy read and understand fashion. After reading this book, you can use and understand some of the more basic jargon of business, investment and finance.

As is the tradition with every great business book, the text ends with Chapter 7 (you know, of bankruptcy fame!). Each chapter presents a different aspect of financial statements, beginning with the income statement, the balance sheet, and the statement of cash flows, and integrates the three to demonstrate how they can be used for financial analysis, inventory tracking and allocating for depreciation. Each chapter starts by explaining the topic fully, and offers several examples of its use in actual business practice. Although the book is a slim volume, it packs a lot of information, being brief, to the point and insightful all at the same time. Additionally, its small size also means that it will not take up too much space on one's shelf of must-have and must-keep books.

I highly recommend this book to anyone having the need to understand financial statements at a glance. Interested readers should also check out some of the other titles in the Agile Manager Series which may be helpful.

I haven't really gotten into the book yet, but it is what I was looking for - investing explained on a beginners level.

My children are interested in investing and don't know anything about the market. There are a few areas I need to learn about as well.

I recommend Thomas Sowell's Basic Economics for someone new to economics. I am amazed at how he can explain economics so simply and understandably. There is a woeful ignorance of how the economy works.

Enlightining source for alliance management

Review Date: 2008-05-16
I am currently writing my PhD dissertation on alliance management and success. For the literature review part of my project, I have read many sources related to inter-organizational issues. I have found many of them relevant to my dissertation. However, since it is very challenging to find a source which relates academic studies to business practice, I have had hard time to justify my points. Mark Darby's "Alliance Brand" is such a source that you can find many recent alliance practice examples; besides, the book provides many well-established and well-recognized academic publications. I was very fascinated when I found well-cited academic journal papers in the "Alliance Brand." I made more sense of the current alliance practice in today's chaotic business world. Writing a PhD dissertation in business is very challenging, because, as my research philosophy, you have to show that there is something "outside" regarding your hypotheses. You need rigid empirical results for your proposed hypotheses. "Alliance Brand" has assisted me in this process. I was very joyful when I saw my thoughts in this book. I highly recommend this book to all researchers interested in alliance management and practice. It is a great guidance to researchers and, it is very well-written and structured.
