The Accountants Desk Reference provides pertinent information regarding accounting rules, best practices, and financial and managerial accounting issues commonly encountered by an accountant. This book is clearly written and concise. Especially notable is the chapter on taxation and financial management. Mr. Bragg has provided information that would otherwise be obtained only though much research. This reference is a must for all accounting professionals.

"The book has three likely uses. First, it can serve as a quick guide for those who can remember any of the author's names for a key article, but need more exact information for location or reference. Second, it can enable those interested in quantitative literature analysis to test and verify much of the work in this area by the authors of this book. Finally, and most likely, the book can help professors identify the seminal works in specific areas of interest. This can be particularly beneficial in designing reading lists for graduate courses.
"The new edition contains three significant additions. First, four additional years are included. Second, the four categories and citation indexes for each article are given in Part I as well as Part II. Third, all indexed articles are listed in the Part II sections, yet readers who scorn the uncited will not be inconvenienced, since unreferenced articles reside at the bottom of each list.
"In summary, this is a significantly improved edition. This unique book shows which works in various areas have most strongly influenced recent academic accounting research. The book should continue to be especially valuable in preparing reading lists for accounting doctoral programs and seminars."
----Accounting Review
"The authors have added citations for research published during the last 3 years to the 22 years of citations contained in the first edition. There is an alphabetical listing of all articles cited, followed by a breakdown according to mode of reasoning, research methodology, school of thought and topical content. Accounting faculty and graduate students will find this to be a useful aid in locating information for their research projects."

The Accounting Software Handbook provides an excellent overview of the state of accounting software today as we move into the Client/Server environment. The book can be read from cover to cover to obtain a basic understanding of the state of the accounting software industry. It also serves as an excellent reference, since the author breaks down the book by chapters such as " Internet Accounting" and " Graphical Accounting", which should be referred back to frequently. Finally, by doing such an excellent job of updating us on the current status of this changing industry, the author provides functional business managers with ideas of how they can use technology to improve their organizations.
The author is an excellent writer whose style is informative for managers, technical people who need a better understanding of business issues, as well as students, salespeople, and others who are trying to develop a basic understanding of the business. I would recommend this book not only to those involved in the software industry, but to anyone studying where business is headed in the future.

I have Ms. Cunningham as my accounting teacher, and this study guide is really helpful in studying for her tests. It isn't hard to work through, but it will really cement everything in your head. When it comes to tricky wording on tests, this study guide is your best defense.

"This book rejects the two most commonly held positions regarding the role of accounting in certain ongoing financial crises: the position of market theorists that accounting doesn't matter and the position of theorists that support the view of 'representational faithfulness.' The author takes a view she calls 'dialectic,' which assumes that accounting 'both reflects and affects' struggles and is 'neither an insignificant player nor a mere bearer of facts.' Under this view it is important to understand both the nature of social conflict in society and the role accounting plays in the social struggle. These ideas are the focus of the analysis in this book.
"It is ambitious, covering a wide range of material including economic theory, philosophy of science, structure of societies, feminist theory, critical theory, and semiotics. It is provocative in that it challenges the reader to recognize and question the most basic implicit and explicit assumptions of accounting professionalism and conventional accounting research."
---Accounting Review
"Using the discipline of semiotics, Lehman presents an extremely insightful and exhaustive analysis of accounting and business literature. The author clearly and expertly demonstrates that the professional literature has failed to acknowledge the profession's participation in social conflict, and as a result has left the profession ill-prepared to respond to current societal needs. Chapters 1 through 3 rigorously lay the theoretical and philosophical foundations for the research methodology. Chapters 4 and 5 are models of clarity, presenting an organized, clearly illustrated (with tables and graphs), and exhaustive analysis of the disturbing research findings. Chapter 6 provides a brief but well-founded conclusion followed by an excellent bibliography. This work is mandatory reading for all graduate students and faculty; it will enable them to understand how accounting can once again become a transforming discipline rather than an obstacle in a changing economy."

I had to use this book for my on-line accounting 101 course, and I found if great to use. It had so many life like case studies, that it made it easy to understand. I recommend this book for anyone who is looking for a great intro to Accounting class content. It covers the basics and also it has on-line aspects and case studies through the Prentice Hall web site.

Finance Primer for Small Business Owners

This book is an essential read for anyone starting or running a small business. A very high percentage of small businesses fail. In part, this high failure rate stems from not understanding the money side of business and taking full advantage of banks and investors. Hendrix provides an important foundation. He does not focus on preventing failure but rather on enabling success. The main point is that small business leaders need to see financial information as the scorecard of fiscal health and providing the insights to course correct. Seizing opportunities and dealing with problems often involves the support of bankers and investors. They want to know where you are and where you are going. To make this case in terms they will understand and find credible, you need to use conventional financial terminology. The book defines these items and explains where and when they are important.
This is not a dry finance or accounting book--it is a primer for aspiring business leaders. Don't be afraid that reading this book will be like some foul tasting medicine that is supposed to be good for you. Hendrix explains each concepts and why it is important in down to earth terms.
I wish I had this insight years ago when I started my first business. Even after learning through the school of hard knocks, I have gained key insights from reading Accounting, Finance and Presentation for Small Businesses. John I. Todor, Ph.D. is the author of Addicted Customers: How to Get Them Hooked on Your Company.

As a prior student who used this book in my principles class in undergrad (I now have a masters in the subject), I learned so much using this book. Now, as a professor using a different text, I dream of a book this helpful to my students!!! I use this book to prepare my examples to use during lectures.
