Levin seems to fall just slightly against the "market" ideas for education, but by exploring the evidence in a domestic and international context we learn the ways in which our ideas are uniquely American and driven by an American ideology that really is not based upon education per se, but an all-pervasive notion of economy.

This book reviews the evidence about so-called "choice" models of education or "free market" models and their impact on education. In the end the evidence shows nothing, but it doesn't refute anything either. What Levin shows us pretty convincingly is that, at the moment anyway, this is a debate driven by ideology rather than by evidence. No matter on which side one falls, one can interpret the evidence based upon their perspective, since the evidence is inconclusive. Like so many other debates in our society we have to move beyond the "classroom effects" and investigate what the proponents or opponents really have as their agenda. This is an excellent book simply because it is one of the first systemic reviews of the evidence as opposed to the ideological journalism with which we are most often confronted. No matter one's perspective, this book is worth reading, because it will alternately challenge and support one's views.

Unique approach to training

MS Project is a difficult application to learn (at least for me!)
The workbook format includes a CD that allows the user to "simulate" using the various main aspects of the application (user does not have to own the real MS Project application; the CD provides a simulation). If other trainings include this approach, I haven't seen it. User is asked to respond with the actions she/he would normally use while navigating through MS Project. The visual, auditory and interactive aspects of the simulation engaged me. "Lessons" are very short (couple of minutes). A one question quiz at the end of each lesson is reinforcing and encouraging.
This should NOT be the primary way a user learns MS Project, but it certainly helped me by "holding my hand" as the screen visually walked me through using parts of the program.
Don't let the comic book appearance of the cover scare you. The content of the book is well written. It is not written like a comic book.
This is for the new "newbie" MS Project user; not good for advanced topics.

Learning to use Microsoft Project is one of those things I know I *should* know but don't. Project 2003 Personal Trainer by CustomGuide has now become the latest "just in case" addition to my bookshelf at work...
Content: The Fundamentals; Entering the Task List; Entering and Assigning Resources; Viewing the Project; Working with Tasks; Working with Resources; Working with Costs; Balancing the Project; Updating Project Progress; Checking Project Progress; Working with Reports; Working with Multiple Projects; Index
As a software developer, I work on a number of projects. But fortunately, the type of development I do is normally not such that it requires the overhead of having to use Project to plan it out. And if it does, I've been lucky to have a project manager to handle all that. I know at some point my luck will run out, however. Project 2003 Personal Trainer is a practical, example-/exercise-driven approach to learning the basics of the software. The philosophy behind CustomGuide is "I listen, I forget; I see, I recall; I do, I understand". Therefore, the entire book is set up to have you actually *do* stuff with Project in order to understand how it works and to learn how to make it go where you want. There's a CD included that is a Project 2003 simulator, so you can still learn the software even if you haven't plunked down a check to Microsoft for Project. This is really nice, in that it gives you maximum flexibility on where you can set up your learning environment regardless of software licensing issues. I can't think of too many better ways to get up to speed more quickly than with this material.
Don't expect that this book will be a long-term reference volume, though. If you are a full-time project manager who is going to live in Project, this book will get you moving quickly. But if you want to learn the fine intricacies of a Gantt chart, you'll need to look elsewhere. That's not to say that this book falls down in that area. It's just not meant to be the end-all repository of all things Project. Get this book, get your feet wet, develop some basic competency, and then decide if you need to go deeper.
I'll be keeping this book on my work bookshelf and watching it closely to make sure it doesn't disappear...

Financial advisors and professional insurance agents routinely make recommendations to clients regarding risk management. Whether it be on the subjects of taxes, investments, disability, death, etc., we know that our clients cannot reasonably expect to reach their goals without balancing risk and return. We have spent years gaining the proper education and developing our skills in order to do this. Yet, all too often we don't apply the same analysis and principles of risk management in our own world.
"Protecting Your Practice" is a MUST read for anyone who is serious about maintaining high ethical standards and full compliance with the myriad of regulations that impact the financial planning profession. From examples to checklists to tips on proper E&O coverage, this book delivers!

As a Certified Financial Planner, I am always on the lookout for effective, easy-to-follow money management ideas for my clients. Stanley Kershman has written a book that is a "good read." It can be read chapter by chapter or all at once (it is hard to put down!) Well laid out, each chapter has helpful hints in bold boxes and ends with a concise, numbered summary. Kershman has touched on all the real-life financial circumstances that ordinary people find themselves in and he has suggested ways to navigate successfully through the occasional rough spots. Although he practises bankruptcy and insolvency law, Kershman has shown how people can avoid becoming his clients! After reading this book, everyone should sit down, make a list of things to do, and perhaps top that list with "Find a Financial Planner."

If you are looking for a "lazy" solution to debt problems (like winning the lottery!) you won't get much from this volume, but if you are really ready to tackle the debt issues, it will be very helpful. For those of us without a serious debt problem it is a reminder of the pitfals to avoid and offers some solid advice on child rearing to teach the correct attitudes. The only problem here is the people who could use/need the book the most might think that a trip to the casino or the "payday loan" place is a wiser 'investment' than this book. Too sad, indeed.

The book is excellent with a nice mix of theory and applications in DEA. I believe this is the best book on DEA. Of special interest is the CD that looks at many DEA models. The CD has no competitor and is by far the best around. I have used this CD in many of my academic papers on DEA. If you need DEA software this is the book.

In my classes and talks, I am often asked about the advantages of my book, QuickBooks 2005 QuickSteps. As I answer those business folks, the biggest advantages are the color screenshots, step by step approach and the huge variety of tips as found in all the QuickSteps books. The 10 chapters are laid out in the order that most people need them:
Chapter 1 - Stepping into QuickBooks 2005
Chapter 2 - Creating a Company File
Chapter 3 - Working with Lists
Chapter 4 - Set up and Use your Bank Accounts
Chapter 5 - Entering and Paying Bills
Chapter 6 - Selling Products and Services
Chapter 7 - Managing Inventory Items
Chapter 8 - Customizing and Maintaining QuickBooks
Chapter 9 - Paying Employees and Taxes and Tracking Time
Chapter 10 - Creating Reports
If you have any comments about my book or QuickBooks in general, I'd love to hear them!
Take care, c.

Raise your kids with more love and less cash...

Lisa Reid's "Raising Kids with Just a Little Cash" illustrates that is is not only possible to raise a family with a limited budget, but it is also the right thing to do.
Her book is about reducing unecessary spending while spending more time with your family. Its reminds us to focus on the more important issues of life - that kids and family need your love and attention, not your money.
Lisa's suggestions are not about doing without. There are hundreds of creative ways to have fun and to deal with everyday issues. My favorites are her ideas on free family entertainment and parties. She includes many references to money-saving resources. Lisa uses real life stories, hers as well as others, to show that you don't need two incomes to raise happy and healthy children. Her writing style is friendly, concise and easy to read.
You will enjoy reading "Raising Kids with Just a Little Cash" and use it as a reference for years while your children grow. I recommend this book to anyone who is serious about raising their children with less money and more love.
How to become your family's "money saver"

Review Date: 1996-12-26
In RAISING KIDS WITH JUST A LITTLE CASH, Lisa Reid quickly dispels the
myth that it takes two incomes and a hectic lifestyle to raise children. In fact, by making
the decision to live on one income so she could stay at home with the kids, the author
discovered a richer, more abundant life for herself and her family. The book is peppered
with inspirational, real-life testimonials of parents who have made a similar choice and
found their lives to be fuller as a result. In a friendly, conversational style, Reid tells you
how you can do it, too. All you need to do is make a commitment to live on one income
and then hire yourself as your family's "money-saver".
Reid gives detailed tips and instructions on ways to reduce the cost of just about
everything involved in raising children. She discusses the economics of diapers and baby
clothes in depth. Follow her strategies for obtaining second hand clothing and shoes and
save up to 90% on the cost of outfitting your children and yourself. Occupy your children
with activities instead of cartoons on Saturday mornings, and you will avoid unnecessary
toy purchases spurred by advertising. Purchase inexpensive, basic toys such as Legos that
make use of your child's imagination and creativity. Or make them yourself; plans and
instructions are included. Entertain your children with free trips to the bakery, the train
station, the airport, museums, the library, instead of the amusement park or arcade. Cut
your food budget dramatically and eat better by following the tips and strategies outlined
in the chapter on food. Throw memorable birthday parties by investing time and
imagination instead of money. The author shows you how. Enjoy good health and travel
for less by making use of the information in the chapters devoted to these subjects.
You don't have to be a parent or a spendthrift to benefit from this book. My wife
and I are frugal and our children are grown and out of the house. Yet, we found numerous
tips that we have put to immediate and good use.
One theme surfaces again and again throughout this book: thrift is not deprivation.
Quite the opposite. A frugal lifestyle is liberating. It presents new choices and
opportunities. These lead to a fuller, more satisfying life. Those who have followed the
advice in this book all claim to be richer by every measure as a result of their employment
of thrift. I heartily recommend this practical book to anyone who desires a simpler, more
abundant life, both for themselves and their children. It comes with a money-back
guarantee. What more could you ask for
