As an attorney-at-law, I found that "Advising Mature Clients" by Dr. Neal E. Cutler has given me a new perspective on analyzing, and on advising older clients about, the increasingly complex series of decisions we all seem to face as we age.

On a personal level, I found the book to be filled with information that is easy to understand and is well-indexed for use by the advisor as well as by those whom he/she advises. Its multi-disciplinary focus gives one an easy depth of understanding of the breadth of Gernontology, and financial & social issues that need to be considered, in just a few hours of study of the clear, concise tables, facts, and figures, which are presented in logical fashion.

The chapter on costs and financial benefits of Long Term Care Insurance alone is worth the price of the book. Strategies and alternatives to pay for Long Term Care Insurance are set forth, along with the sobering financial burden long term care imposes, and the alarming rate of increase in long term care costs, compared to the more affordable insurance premiums.

This book should be kept as a desk reference and ready authoritative source of information, to share with clients who have questions or concerns on any aspect of the topics of Wealth Span Planning and Financial Gerontology.

I found this little book an incredible resource. I always get the Lasser tax guide when I file, but with all the changes in the tax laws I also wanted a simple, short, easy to understand explanation of everything and this is it--It tells you the new law, explains it in language you can understand, then gives examples of how it is applied, with tips on using it. I am not an accountant, and have always dreaded the thought of wading through tax books to find extra deductions but this was easy to do, and maybe because it was written by the same people, but I found this and the Lasser Your Income Tax complemented each other well--it made for easy reference back and forth.

A must read before you file.

This book is great. Before I filed my taxes, I wanted to make sure that I understood all the changes of the new tax law. Not only did this book help me understand the changes in clear, easy to understand language, but, it also gave me valuable money saving tax tips. I was shocked by how many new ways there are for me to save money. It opened my eyes to how I can plan for my daughter's college in ways that ensure I receive the maximum tax saving benefits.

This guide is excellent. Very easy to find what you are looking for and written in layman's terms. The comments on past IRS law cases is especially clarifying. At the price, this is a bargain.

Bottom Line for Small Business
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-01
Barbara Weltman's "Small Business Taxes 2007," is the best guide for charting your way through the record keeping, profit and loss statements, tax credits, deductions, depreciation & amortization, and cost of goods sold around for the person who files a Schedule C form with their 1040 IRS tax form.
The examples are clear, even though some have more 0's than a real small business person can imagine. She doesn't offer any gimmicks, make any promises or come-ons. Her work is straight forward, this is the Code, if it applies to your business you may use it. Readers appreciate the lack of hype which millions of Americans have learned to mistrust.
With any small business not everything applies to each individual -- this book is excellent for locating answers to the tough questions.
We did have some fun with the subtitle (JK Lasser's New Rules for Small Business Taxes) that taken at face value would read Lasser is making the rules not the IRS. But then with taxes a little humor is appreciated.
We used this volume extensively for our book and found the index very helpful in locating the material we needed and desired, when there really isn't much out there for so small a segment of the tax paying population.

Janusz's Essential Resource for Mortgage Buyers

Ted Janusz has written a great resource for those who rent or buy. It helped me understand the difference between Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, why there's a separate closing agent at a sale, how to use the good faith estimate to compare to actual mortgage costs, and how to reduce costs with mortgages. I wish I had owned this book when I bought my home. I am buying multiple copies to give to friends and family.

An eye-opening look at why closing costs are so high

In the mortgage application process, we're disoriented by mountains of paper we're compelled to read and sign. Somewhere in the back of our minds, we probably know that most of it is meant to protect someone else--not us. Ted Janusz's book "Kickback" makes it easy to understand traps in the mortgage and home buying process, and shows us how industry insiders use hard-to-penetrate terminology to disguise extra compensation paid for by the borrower. Don't wait until you're asked to sign mortgage papers. This is an easy and quick read that you must put on your list as soon as you start house hunting. Knowledge is power--be informed!

This was my first book that I have read by Mr. Hammond and I enjoyed it emenously! This is one of those books that you will reference over and over again.....a good one to keep close on the book shelf. Specifically, I enjoyed the case files that Mr. Hammond used in the book and found that even though it relatd to me personally, there is still hope at the end of the tunnel.

An excellent financial tool that pays for itself!

I knew that I had to take care of my debt now or carry it with me forever. This book provided an enormous amount of useful information. It forced me to take a serious look at my spending habits and rethink the role of credit in my life. Hammond's writing is down to earth and easy to relate to. I highly recommend Life Without Debt to anyone concerned about their financial well-being.

Maskell takes a baseball bat to the Accounting Bee Hive with a call to ACTION for Accounting to become an integral part of the transformation of their business.

Concise, with clear steps to creating an improvement plan, the book is meant to start a dialogue among the Accounting community that will inevitably lead to a fundamental shift in how Accountants see their role in the organization. "Traditional Management Accounting is irrelevant at best," is enough to wake up even the stauchest dyed-in-the-Wool Cost Accountants and start them on a path to looking forward in the organization instead of focusing on past results.

This is a modern and fresh look at accounting the way it should be. When the universities start teaching this to our future accountants we may once again lead the world at our own game.

This is the best book that money can buy. I am a Chartered Management Accountant (CIMA) student. I bought number of books of this subject and they didn't help me in any way. Finally after much thoughts I bought this book and I am glad that I did. I was able to clear my professional exams without any tutor support and above all I was placed in the 70%+ category. All thanks are due to the author who wrote such a book that takes care to explain every bit of management accounting. This book is best for the following chapters:
1. Process Costing - Can be tricky during first read, however the best read!!!
2. Income effects of alternative cost accumulation systems
3. CVP Analysis - Simple and Effective, the problems are great!!!
4. Measuring Relevant Costs
5. ABC
6. Pricing Decision - The final problems are really advanced
7. Decision making under uncertainity - Doesn't cover much material though
8. Capital Decision 1 and 2
9. Standard Costing 1 and 2 - This is my favorite chapter and the author does a great job here.
10. Inventory accounting
11. Linear Programming - The problems are challenging to anyone who didn't take a course in LP.

Overall a great book for those who are really interested in learing this subject.

With all the CPA review materials out there, I haven't found ANY that do a very good job explaining the research part of the exam. This book is excellent. I know the research part isn't a large percentage of your exam grade....but a few points here and there can make a huge difference...believe me. I just received a 74 on one exam part recently. I think this book will add at least a few points to my score. And for only about 20 bucks.

A must-have for every CPA exam candidate

This book is unique and awesome! Professor Feller did such a wonderful job to illustrate all research strategies and provide all most updated "quick study lists" for FAR, AUD, and REG that every CPA exam candidate need desperately to survive the simulation sections. For example, the book discusses about pros and cons of using FARS Online vs. FARS CD-ROM, and other free resources of authoritative literature. I feel so lucky to have found and read this book before I sit for the CPA exams, and highly recommend it with my full heart!
