This is the best introductory accounting book I've ever seen. I've been fortunate to attend the university where the authors teach, and have studied accounting under both Stice and Swain. The book is very clear, without the instructor's explanation (and the instructors are funny as heck and absolutely know the material) and I recommend it to anyone.

A Seasoned Engineers' Journal
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-25
This book serves as an awesome guide to the engineer seeking to become a key player in their team and business. The author brings a lot of experience to the book and equips the reader with the tools needed to build and maintain a successful business. John (the author) covers some of the popular frameworks, containers, API's and patterns used in Java today. Aside from the technical topics, John touches on the culture of engineering and business politics you may face.

I've been in engineering for almost 10 years now and have worn many hats; nothing beats experience and this book is a window into that experience. If you're like me, the engineer that stands the front line when the business is challenged with the technical issues of today, Affinity is the sword I'd carry into battle.

If you are responsible for any Java container at any level - You should read this book. Discusses many common pitfalls of Java server administration and for the first time in a long time, I felt that somone can relate. The author does a great job of providing examples of bad practice - almost like a Weblogic anti-pattern guide - and then advice on a better way to go about your business. Where this book really excels is in how it's written. Technical yet friendly to those who are not - think managers who aren't involved in the day to day operations, can use this book to give them strong insight into their staff's work and help to preempt many of the problems faced by organizations and personnel.

As a deep investigative reporter for USA Today, Greg shares the untold stories behind Enron, Tyco and Worldcom, as well as the truth behind the Martha Stewart scandal. Were you aware that the head of the Securities and Exchange Commission tried desperately to warn Congress of what was coming 13 months before the Enron debacle? Greg Farell's America Robbed Blind is an eye-opener that could easily be made into a movie. Hardcover.

A must read for everyone.

Mr. Farrell provides a captivating succinct recap of the recent high profile white color crimes that shook the American investment community and more importantly our economy over the last five years. Every case details the shortfalls in the system that fostered these very costly criminal and immoral acts and concludes with solutions and standards to prevent history from repeating itself. It is a "must read" because it interprets these so called sophisticated accounting fraud cases into basic terminology for any level of investor to understand. The author has a great understanding for the true victims of these costly crimes, every citizen and our economy, not just a small enclave of very rich corporate barons.

A real eye-opener

I couldn't put this book down. Bonner has identified the major players in US-El Salvador relations in that time period and done an excellent job of contrasting the "party line" (the propoganda from the State Department and much of the press) from what he saw on the "front line" while living in El Salvador as a reporter for the NY Times. This book is not for the week of stomach, as it very graphically describes the fates of many people who died in the struggle. He has done an incredible job of organizing declassified documents and press clippings to show how the American public was deceived.

A memorable book

US foreign policy was neatly summed up by a commentator on 'Newsnight' recently. A country is like a game of poker in which you play a hand and then cut your losses and get out if things don't work out while the European stance is arguably more socialistic. Little seems to have changed then, judging by this horrifying book, burning with indignation by Raymond Bonner.
The Reagan administration has been deemed culpable by some over Central American injustice, but the 'weakness' of the title applies as much to the decisions made by the Carter administration, despite avowedly making human rights the 'soul of our foreign policy.' America could not conceive of any popular revolution as not instigated by the Soviet Union. Ironic then, that this book should show the importance of religion, not as a take it or leave it life style choice of the privileged west, but as a vital cohesive force against the forces of Nazi tyranny, which this undoubtably was. It is still inexplicable to me that a nation could make such an enormous sacrifice in fighting Facism during the war, only to come to this deplorable conclusion. Do the ends justify the means? Mr Bonner leaves us in no doubt.

Annual Reports 101: What the Numbers and the Fine Print Can Reveal About the True Health of a Company

A wonderful primer for people wanting to better understand what an Annual Report is really all about!
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-21

This book was a pleasure to read. I kind of read it as one of three books regarding securities analysis or financial analysis. First I read Security Analysis (ISBN: 0071448209) followed by Fire Your Stock Analyst (ISBN: 0132260387) followed by this book. I highly recommend anyone interested in securities analysis or financial analysis to read all three.

Annual Reports 101 introduces the reader to SEC filings (most notably the Annual Report) that securities analysts use to do their securities or financial analysis. Interestingly, the author points out that analysts should use more of what is included in the annual reports than they in fact use to make their recommendations.

For the past year and a half I have been using my accounting and law background to work on securities fraud class action lawsuits. Much of what is discussed in this book is what such plaintiffs' lawyers need to understand to successfully win their litigation matters. Financial statements are only as good as the underlying data is accurate and the drafters are credible. The public accounting firms don't really audit their clients' books like we think they do. And annual reports rarely paint an accurate picture of how a company is really doing financially. Such reports are generally little more than expensive press releases. But by reading this book you will be able to dig deeper into the facts presented in Annual Reports and hopefully be able to make better decisions that require you reading them.

If you are not particularly adept at accounting, bookkeeping, and financial reporting, then I think this book would be a good introductory primer for you to read. And there is some good material on financial ratios for you to digest. All in all, this was a wonderful book if its topic interests you.

My favorite chapters were 9 and 10. In fact, I read them first when I started the book. And it was nice to see a Glossary included at the end. 5 stars!

Exposes Annual Reports and Need for Accounting Reform
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-04-24
Michael Thomsett's Annual Reports 101 is a powerful and practical book that demystifies annual reports. He persuasively makes the case that these reports intend to obscure and obfuscate as much as to enlighten, and that wary investors may get burned if they think reading the reports constitutes due diligence.

Especially for non-financial professionals, Annual Reports 101 is an effective primer to walk you through the structure of these documents, step by step. Thomsett moves from the micro to the macro is arguing that Sarbanes Oxley and other corporate reforms have failed to bring the needed level of transparency to the practice of accounting and reporting financial results.

A STRONG "read" recommendation!

Probably the single best introduction to financial markets' mechanics. The complex workings of the financial world are decomposed into simple building blocks, that have their foundation upon the principle of risk-sharing. Maybe of all books about hedge fund strategies, this is one of the clearest and most useful expositions of the principles upon which absolute return strategies are based - even though it has no magic 'hedge fund' words in its title to capture the reader's attention. Amid a flood of useless marketing stuff about hedge funds (including some of the works of Dr. Nicholas) and extremely boring expositions of minute details about the institutional and regulatory details of various markets this is a very good achievement indeed. Although truly sophisticated readers would probably want to look elsewhere, this book gives you something essential, which painfully misses from many fields of modern knowledge - a broad picture, without which we risk not to see the wood for the trees.

I've been a line positions most of my life and thought about risk in my area, but generally thought it was someone else's problem. Lynch's book smashed through my denial. With an easy to read style with great examples, Lynch demonstrates that "Risk Awareness" needs to be part of a company's culture. I am handing this book out and asking associates to begin asking a lot more "What if..." questions.

Fresh, innovative and spot on

Lynch gets it right in this book. He takes a broad set of perspectives, experiences and best practices and pieces them together to create a one-of-a-kind mosaic that finally illuminates the real issues we are facing in the business world. He seems to have done his homework, but this is far from an academic-only exercise...it is reality based, practical and useful. Translates an enormous and challenging issue into digestible and actionable guidance. While no one can completely tackle this issue in 300 pages, this book will certainly help you understand where to start.

I found this dictionary very helpful in elucidating auditing terminology, and explaining the background to audit concepts. Complex ideas are often distilled into a few, clear paragraphs. Perhaps an additional diskette would have been useful to aid key word searches?
But overall this is a very good guide to the language of audit. Recommend.

Valuable tool.

As an auditor, I found this dictionary to be a valuable tool: at last, in one volume, there is a comprehensive guide to auditing terminology. It is a relief to no longer have to plod through accounting dictionaries to find auditing terms. Guidance for further reading within the auditing literature is another plus.

Jim Kaplan's The Auditor's Guide to Internet Resources, 2nd Edition

By: Ron Keister Date: 6-15-00

The Auditor's Guide to Internet Resources, 2nd Edition has a lot of very useful information for auditors interested in using the Internet as an audit tool. In fact, there is good information for anyone interested in using the Internet. While the whole book is useful, for auditors the most interesting and immediately useful areas include:

A. The Internet Literacy Checklist B. The Digital Literacy Self-Assessment Tool C. Information on how auditors can use the Internet D Internet Search strategies and evaluating search results E. Guidelines and techniques for auditors to evaluate Internet information and data

The Internet Literacy Checklist and Digital Literacy Self-Assessment Tool will help auditors understand their Internet strengths and areas that could use improvement. Audit Directors and Managers can use these to help identify audit staff training needs, as well as help them assess their reliance on auditors' use of Internet information. The effective use of these can help improve the quality and quantity of audit work.

The Internet audit use areas presented in this book are some things that all audit organizations should seriously consider. I fear too many are not making high-quality use of the Internet, resulting in less economical and valuable audits. With the usual limited resources, audit organizations must focus their efforts on key organizational issues in an efficient and effective manner.

Knowing how to identify and find the "right" audit information via the Internet in a well-organized and successful way is essential. This book provides excellent techniques and ideas for how to achieve this. First, it provides a good method for identifying what information should be searched for. Then it provides excellent Internet search techniques and ideas. Last, it provides a first-rate way to assess the adequacy and validity of the Internet information obtained.

If the above were the only things in this book, it is worth the price. But no, there are other interesting areas including:

A. The list of available Internet features and how to understand and use them B. Good information on audit discussion groups, tips on use, and a thorough list C. Excellent "real-life" examples of how auditors have used the Internet D. A great list of technical data that can help reduce the dreaded call to "support" and the wait on them to "fix it" E. Last, but not least, is the details or inside Internet information that help you understand the Internet, how it works, and it's good and not so good features.

Reviewer Background: Mr. Keister has a bachelor and master degrees in Accounting; is a CIA and CPA; and has more than 25 years auditing experience, the last 20 in internal auditing in both large and small organizations, private industry and higher education. He has been using computers since about 1982 and the Internet since 1995, but is not an IT auditor.
