Research Delight

Review Date: 2003-08-04
One of America's most experienced prospect researchers has written the mother-lode on research in fundraising.

Cecelia Hogan's new book is 390 pages of pure value - for fundraisers, researchers, managers and suppliers. Although written primarily for an American audience, its value lies in its cool, concise, cautious approach to research, from day one to the end of your campaign.

Cecelia makes her mark early in the book with a 20-page treatise on the ethics of research. This moral (but not moralizing) tone pervades the book, reminding us to respect our donors and to focus on using "the first philanthropic dollar raised to efficiently identify the next."

The heart of the book is a series of chapters about research techniques. Covering "research math," building a pool of prospects, screening, tracking and managing research, these sections will be of value to researchers from Belfast to Bologna and from Alaska to Adelaide. The techniques that Cecelia describes are applicable in all of these places, even if the sources cited may be American. And experienced researchers will find plenty of value; I found new techniques, new sources, and, new ways of looking at research in this book.

Included in the book is a series of useful appendices including a glossary and models for the paperwork associated with research, as well as more US sources of information and help.

The book is well edited and produced, leaving me with just one gripe - Cecelia's over-use of the first person plural. We don't need to write like that all the time, Cecelia. Good writing can include a passive tense or two.

Whether you are a fundraiser, a researcher or a manager, buy this book and learn all about prospecting from an expert.

Prospect Research: A Primer for Growing Nonprofits is one of the best resources available for those who are new to prospect research, for those who need a refresher or for development officers looking for research guidance. It provides the basics (who, what, when, why, where & how)in easy-to-understand terms and format as well as sample forms. In addition, it takes the process one step further with explanations and ideas for prospect management and tracking. All the information you need to build and/or improve your organization's prospect research department operation.

After a 7 year absence, I reentered the field of prospect research in 2003 just when this book came out. I can't say enough how much it helped me reacquaint myself with traditional research methods as well as introducing me to the many new information research, management, and analysis processes that technology has inspired.

Not sure if I'll stay in prospect research, but will definitely keep the book!

This is an excellent book. Jim filled it with both Wit and Wisdom. I enjoyed the stories of learning by hard knocks and then the realization of what a planned presentation can do for you. Specifically I thought Jim's layout of the presentation and the explanations why to do it that way were especially valuable. I highly reccomend this book for both beginning and experienced agents. Especially those who like to "wing it" a lot. I would like to see Jim expand the book sometime to cover real estate websites, blogs, and online presentations.

Thanks!

I have known Jim for about 7 years and he has also impressed me as dynamic, young individual that knows exactly what he wants, and already has the plans mapped out how to get it. He proved that by listing and selling hundreds and hundreds of homes using systems, presentations and marketing methods that he created. Jim has mastered how to serve the customer efficiently and how to communicate with the customer effectively. Now you can learn those techniques from him.

This book is intellegent and very well written. I think that R.E. Manchester put a lot of time, effort, and passion into this book. When reading this book you don't only understand, but you feel as if you are having a beneficial conversation with this author. The words are wise and the power gained is worth while. I would like to thank R.E. Manchester for taking time out of, what seems to be a busy life, to educate others.

"Solving the Corporate Value Enigma" concisely outlines the importance of appropriate strategic planning in creating and capturing value in a corporation. I found the book easy to read and well organized, ultimately leading to a very practical and useful tool. Something that many business books fail to accomplish.

The author's methodogy for implementation provided a "real world" game plan that I will be able put into practice. Save the $40,000 business school fee, buy this book!

From Theory To Practice

As both a practitioner and an educator, I found that "Solving the Corporate Value Enigma" provided the right mix of theory and practice. The authors have road-tested their tools with scores of corporate clients over twenty years and then validated/refined their hypotheses through hundreds of senior-level corporate interviews in a two year period. They provide a series of tools and a methodology (The "Turbo" Launch Program) that managers can use by themselves, or with help, to start with a minimal application of resources to see immediate results. A learning organization will embrace the findings from these low risk pilot projects and apply resources surgically throughout the organization to see a directly-attributable increase in shareholder value. They boldly address the concept of corporate risk head-on - and provide a structure for the conversations that need to occur to address it systematically.

I love owning this book and I generally buy the new edition every year. My investment company offers the S&P reports on their website, but I like to own the book so I can easily browse it, mark it up, flag specific stocks with Post-It-Notes, and so on. I focus quite a big on Standard & Poor's proprietary "investability quotient percentile" [IQ]for my buy-and-hold stock decisions. (I also take a careful look at the ten-year dividend history.) You will also find five-star buy vs sell ratings, target price and when set, earnings/dividend rating, fair value, volatility, relative strength, key stock statistics, dividend data, and LOTS of other information. There is quite a bit of interesting and well-written prose about each company, too---it's not all charts and numbers.

Review Date: 2002-03-09
Very useful book, particularly in what concerns alternative L-Stable distributions. True, not too versed in financial theory but I'd rather see the author erring on the side of more physics than mathematical economics. As an author I don't ask much from books, just to deliver what they indend. This one does.

Clear historical description of Einstein/Bachelier. Hopefully one day we will call derivatives pricing the Bachelier valuation.

The book in short provides an excellent perspective on the statistical approach to asset price dynamics. Very clear and to the point.

Excelllent introduction and very stimulating

Review Date: 2006-02-01
This book was my first thorough introduction to this field and I have found it thoroughly enjoyable. The comparisions between the tools of Physics and Finance along with the presentation of empirical data was highly stimulating. The economic terms were presented with lucidity and conciseness and the use of relevant examples in both Physics and Finance made it an easy read. Also of great value was it comparisons of standard economic theory with various tools within Physics.

This book also provides a very complete Bibliography where one can find classical and neoclassical economic texts and further references and directions in this relatively new field. I highly reccomend it to any Physicist looking to go into Finance or just as a good read and also to (neo) classical econonomists and financial engineers alike.

I also deeply appreciated the respect it showed to economists and its straightforward, non preachy manner that many Physicists are often guilty of!

Thanks

Review Date: 2003-10-28
This is a book that will make you think about who pays when executive compensation, principally in the form of stock options, is not in synch with with the law of supply and demand. The answer is that we all do: stockholders, employees, customers, suppliers and the general public. The author makes a compelling case that pay and incentives should be based on critical measures of company performance. It is not in our interest to create doubt about our corporate governance. Executive compensation planning needs to incorporate higher standards and we can no longer ignore whether stock options are an expense on the income statement. This book does a masterful job of laying out the most important considerations for the guardians of the corporate pocketbook.

I've read lots of real estate books over the years, but "Stop Foreclosure Now" is one of the best. Plus, you don't have to be in foreclosure to appreciate its contents. For example, I'm a real estate investor, but still found it valuable. The book is divided into five sections. The first section covers promissory notes, mortgages, and deeds of trust. The second section differentiates between judicial and non-judicial foreclosure and describes the procedures for each. The third section describes various strategies homeowners can utilize to stop the foreclosure and save their homes. The fourth section, which was particularly helpful to me. Describes the specific foreclosure procedures in each of the 50 states. It includes a nifty map of each states and that state's website (which you can access for updates on foreclosure laws). The final section contains a glossary of commonly used real estate terms. This book is a valuable new addition to my real estate library, and I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to learn more about foreclosure.

Reducing the stress of dealing with foreclosure...

"With STOP FORECLOSURE NOW, author Lloyd Segal has done a HUGE favor for many of us homeowners who have to face the very real intimidating and frightening process of coping with such financial difficulties. By simplifying and demystifying many of the steps involved, Mr. Segal has given us access to the knowledge and the ways and means necessary to better protect our families and our properties.
It's a very important intermediate step before having to seek and pay for professional help!

Thank-you,

A pure gem of wisdom, knowledge and power

As a principle, I stay far away from self help and you-can-do-it-yourself books, because more often than not, their authors seem to have the secret ambition of turning clueless reader/user into experts on their subject matters. Mr. Segal's book does not supply the reader with needless information on foreclosure, short sales and related matters: it simply provides very straightforward answers to all the fundamental questions the distressed homeowner actually has and to which he/she is seeking concrete answers to get out of a difficult situation. Plain and simple.
.
What more, the book is remarkably clearly written, and structured in such a way that the user/reader does not spend a minute agonizing over where to start, what chapters to read, or what information could be relevant given his or her particular circumstances. This book is in fact very results-oriented, and explores right from the start different viable solutions; from there, the reader/user is then guided through his or her solution, or best alternative option very steadfastly by the author. In that regard, I have to admire Mr. Segal's great ability to navigate the reader/user through a complex situation with surprisingly simple solutions, and his ability to put himself in the shoes of a distressed homeowner. Truly amazing!

Now. I came across, and bought this book when was entangled in a seemingly dead end situation: I had tried - rather very unsuccessfully-- to sell my house on which I owed more than the current market value, from 2 different lenders; my real estate agent, and real estate lawyer had both given up on my case; I felt trapped, and I was angered by the situation. When they let me down, I freezed, and was basically waiting for doom to loom on me. " Stop Foreclosure Now. Save your house if you can; save your credit if you can't" did not merely give me hope to find a way out. It actually empowered me overnight to take charge of my situation, by equipping me with the knowledge, tools, and information needed to engage with lenders and people in the real estate community in an intelligible and articulated manner about my case. Indeed, as a read the book, I could see myself evolving from a state of desperation and disempowerment to a state of mind where I could see new opportunities emerging from my obviously desparate situation. In that respect, one of the key lessons of the book, from a homeowner's perspective is Mr' Segal's take that foreclosure is not the end of it all; as a matter of fact, it could actually be the best thing happening to a homeowner seeking a fresh beginning in homeownership.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone, -- distressed homeowner or not -- who wants to engage intelligibly with lenders, or real estate folks on a foreclosure case, and work out a viable solution for herself or himself. Given the current real estate market, this book is simply a gem of wisdom, knowledge and power.
