Medieval Shenanigans

Review Date: 2006-11-07
Brother Godfrey's Journal of the year 1269 C. 1971

Here is the prologue to this little book, now out of print;

During the Medieval period, when the Established Church reigned supreme, and weilded such power as to cause the upheavals
of the Crusades and the Inquisition, great Monasteries were set up, and Pardoners roamed the land with Papal Indulgences for
the Nobility to buy their way into Heaven.

Many of the entries included in this manuscript are actual entries in Day-journals of the period; as an example, it was
actually forbidden to accept fees for the performance of a marriage, and the penalty was censure from the local Archbishop.

These entries were not made in fun; I do not mean to excuse this work on the standpoint of humor for its own sake. If the
entries are funny, it is simply that Man is a very peculiar animal, and does some strange things with the rare and precious
tools and gifts which he is given to work with for his own developement and the developement of all sentient life.

This book was written in two days; I was in what could be called a full trance at the time; nothing similar has happened to
me since; THIS BOOK WAS WRITTEN FROM MEMORY. It is not important whether everyone understand or believe this, but for those
who have eyes to see and ears to hear, heed well that warning: THE TEACHINGS OF CHRIST DID NOT SURVIVE HIS DEATH.

Father, it is finished.

And this entry from the fly cover;

In the heart of the dark ages, while the plague and the Crusades ravage Europe, in a remote country sector well suited to
cultivating wine grapes, is a small but thriving monastery. Here Brother Godfrey begins his journal with the New Year's Day,
1269 A.D. entry, " Enough bread and wine to last until Spring. "

In his rollicking little book, which packs a big punch, you will travell through a monastic year with Godfrey. Let him
educate you in the seven deadly sins. Join Brother Gregory in the vinyard at the discovery of Blessed Virgin Weed. Through
Godfrey's bleary eyes, see the resulting boom in the Holy Vision trade, which brings a humble, if sometimes scandalous,
monastery out of obscurity right into the big-time of mass-appeal and the heights of medieval economic success.

Read this Journal as a fable of human folly, as of a tale of the inevitable descending octave of greed and ambition - in any
case, enjoy the author's intentional use of humor to shock and awaken something in you that might be called Conscience.

And from the back cover, here is a comment from John C. Lilly, M.D. author of " The Dyadic Cyclone ";

" E. J. Gold, Sufi, transit guide and explorer of inner domains...Joy/humor/personal energy combined with discipline,
facilitate transformation of Self/others. "

Indeed, this is a great little book to be kept around and read occasionally whenever the fancy takes you.

I was a child in Rev. Jordan's curch in Colorado Springs, when he wrote and compiled the sermons in the book. We could hardly wait to see what he would take out of his brown bag each Sunday. I was in juionr high, I think when he was convinced to put them all into a book. This is a wonderful resource for anyone doing childrens sermons. Mary Lou Anderson's ilistations are wonderfull as well, she was a lovely lady.

I actually phoned Richard Moses and he was gracious enough to speak with me. I told him how much I enjoyed reading his delightful book and felt as though I too went on a "'Round the World cruise!"

He is the consummate gentleman and it shows in his book. His writing is descriptive, humorous, and even educational.

Trust me, if you have a stressful job like me (stockbroker) it was such a joy to curl up in bed each night and "escape" to the high seas.

All I can say is, "Richard, please take ANOTHER trip and write again...SOON!!!!"

This author wasn't content with daydreaming. He actually signed on as a passenger to a freighter with a round-the-world itinerary, bringing socks, books, and his trusty popcorn popper. Mr. Moses records his trials and triumphs, his delight and disappointment, and his great joy throughout the long voyage. Traveling on a tramp freighter would be a grand adventure if you are gifted with Mr. Moses' flexibility and humor - if not, then with luck, someone like him will be on board to show you how it is done.
This is a gripping must-read. Don't miss the very last words of the book.

A powerful book that challenges status quo Christianity. Having visited Church of the Savior many times, I find this book expresses the core value that makes CoS one of the most cutting edge Chriostian communities in the world. Powerful for all generations.

I stumbled across this handy planner for writers 2 years ago and what a treasure I found! From inspiration to organization, the Bylines 2007 Writer's Desk Calendar is a gift that will keep on giving all year long - and then some! I still refer back to my 2005 edition when I want to check on what pieces I submitted and where. In my 2006 edition, I can track the goals I set at the beginning of the year and see how far I've come in achieving them. With such a wealth of information at your fingertips, the Bylines Writer's Desk Calendar is a "must-have" for every writer!

Get yourself a copy of Sylvia Forbes' "Bylines: 2007 Writer's Desk Calendar" - you'll be glad you did!

I see most of wall calendars, desk calendars, engagement calendars, diaries and journals intended for aspiring or practicing authors. Simply stated, one of the very best of them for 2007 is Sylvia Forbes' "Bylines: 2007 Writer's Desk Calendar", a superbly designed and presented weekly planner for writers that is enhanced with 53 stories specifically appropriate to encourage and inspire people to write something every day of every week of every month throughout the year. Spiral bound so as to lay flat upon a desktop or table, every week finds an author's personal anecdote (along with a photo) of a particular author on the left, with the seven day week laid out on the right. Each day also comes with a little notation of authors past and present born on that particular day. "Bylines" is an ideal gift to give any novice author because it is a perfect writing motivator. It not only makes for a great writing, things-to-do and appointment log, it's a great way to discover such writing-related holidays as Biographer's Day, National Columnist's Day, Young People's Poetry Week, and even Be Kind to Editors and Writers Month! (Shouldn't somebody also come up with a `Be Kind to Reviewers' month?) Every dedicated author needs to keep track of deadlines, keep focused on their writing goals, keep up their morale, jog their memory by recording contact names, addresses, and websites with a highly portable and user-friendly take-along calendar like "Bylines'. When you have a daily written log book you also have an indispensably valuable document when responding to any IRS challenges to your expenses or validity as a writer. My particular advice to editors and literary agents is to give out a copy of "Bylines" to your authors and clients as way of motivating them to keep turning out their best work in a timely manner! Whether you are a beginning writer or a seasoned author, get yourself a copy of Sylvia Forbes' "Bylines: 2007 Writer's Desk Calendar" - you'll be glad you did!

This is a great calendar that you can re-use every year--I hang it right next to my current year calendar so I won't have to re-write all those birthdays, anniversaries, etc. each time I get a new calendar. I even used my electronic labelmaker for the entries so they look nice and neat. A must have if you are an organization freak like me!

Totally Sweet!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-12
This text was very well written. To this reader who was also reared on Lamming and Naipaul and the rest, there is nothing more gratifying than a beautiful sentence, and Neptune gives us lots of those. Lovely. The spicy tale of the Yanks in the Windies is, as Neptune insists, sometimes glossed over as a Williams-inspired legacy floats on in our various discussions. But indeed, none of what happened during or after the Americans populated Chaguaramas en masse is as cut-and-dry as your average old-time calypso would have you believe. Neptune pieces together a refreshing new narrative that thrusts agency back into women's fingers, exposes the clandestine operations of white hegemony's champions and re-weaves the threads of Trinidadian nationalism. All the while, he delights us with clever, modern usage of the contemporary language rapport during the occupational shenanigans subtly and tastefully. It is a lovely read for anyone, and West Indians in particular will probably be quite tickled throughout. The "Coda" was quite a teaser, particularly the last couple of paragraphs. Neptune opens a world of conversational possibilities for his future books, which you'll be eagerly anticipating after putting this one down.

Peace!

Caliban breaks the mold
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-21
I confess I've never been one to pick up an 'academic' history book in hopes of getting a pleasurable read, however this book breaks the scholarly mold. Though I find Neptune to be heady and thoroughly introspective, his writing lacks, and thankfully so, the jargon and esotericism that can keep me from connecting with a book. 'Caliban and the Yankees' brings up some great and interesting points about revolution and forced me to revisit my image of the revolutionist--here, the disenfranchised people finally get recognition for an often overlooked branch of intelligence that can not be studied in the universities or acquired through a privileged upbringing.
The US occupation in Trinidad, as told by Neptune, becomes a salacious tale of race and class relations, the construction of a national identity and the people who took it upon themselves to reshape and define the culture of its land for the history of its future.
Not only a solid read, but a good one.

Review Date: 2000-04-14
This journal is taking me to a deeper level of relationship with God. This 30-day journal has Bible quotes and lots of prompting with the prayer process. My prayer style before this book was lots and lots of requests. This book is teaching me not just to talk, but to listen, and to commit to Jesus with all my heart. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to go deeper in their faith.

An excellent description of a life of scientific adventure.
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 1999-06-09
As an ecologist, I knew little of Prof. Schmidt- Nielsen's research. However, I was impressed by three aspects of his autobiography:

1. He showed that research in the field or the lab can be a real adventure.

2. His approach to research was a strong combination of observation and humane experiment- ation.

3. He is a scientist who can write clearly, with no reliance on jargon used only by scientists in his profession.

This is a book I recommend to scientists, budding scientists, and anyone curious about the way scientists live and love!

Exceptionally gripping to the curious scientist in all of us
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 1998-09-18
Schmidt-Nielsen's book, "The Camel's Nose..." is a history of science in the 20th C., a textbook on physiology, and a personal journal. From the first page I was as fascinated with his research subjects as he was! It was refreshing to learn of a time when personal curiosity and professional work were not at odds with each other, but worked to create the best possible research and a happy life. Schmidt-Nielsen believes that scientific literature should not be convoluted, and his memoirs follow this rule. I highly recommend this book to anyone who still has their childhood curiosity about how non-human animals work! A science degree is not necessary to be totally enthralled by his work and life.
