This book gives voice to that connection to the earth that so many yearn for, or remember, or even know daily. It is wonderful when such hard won experiences can be shared and given the grace they deserve, accessible to all. Magic though, how Jorrin by subtle turns brings one to a sense of awe for sheep and goats!

I enjoyed this book very much. It's very easy to imagine meeting all the animals on the farm because the author describes their personalities in such detail. I went to school nearby and the descriptions of the weather and terrain brought back memories. The essays are more than just another new farmer tale. They are smoothly written and tightly constructed. Some describe the sad or profound moments of life. I'll be rereading Sylvia's Farm whenever I want to visit 'upstate'.

The perfect gift book...

I read my copy straight through. Simple, yet lyrically written vignettes of both the struggles and the great joys of a hardscrabble farm life, told with the Yankee sensibilities of this serendipitous shepherd.

Not only for those who love animals. A real eye-opener for anyone who has ever thought of sheep as not much more than sweet but somewhat simple-minded bits of fluff. Sylvia Jorrin's journal captures their characters and their quirks. I finished this book hoping that she continues their stories.

The only complaint I have about this book it its paper, which is "bible thin." The tales and sketches from all of Hawthorne's collections are included here, along with 16 previously uncollected stories. If you've read any of Hawthorne's more popularly anthologized tales, you will be amazed at the eloquence and quality of these lesser known jems.

My personal desert island book.

If Library of America had never published another book, this one alone would have justified their existence and earned them the gratitude of readers everywhere. Nearly 1,500 pages of what is arguably the best prose ever published by an Ameican writer.

I am sappy enough to enjoy Hawthorne the most in old editions, the older the better. But the stories are the same, no matter whether you're reading them in a dusty 19th century edition of _Mosses from an Old Manse_ or in this state-of-the-art omnibus edition, which includes all of Hawthorne's tales and sketches arranged chronologically, with brief bibliographic and biographic essays and a few explanatory notes. Take it on vacation with you some summer and experience it for yourself.

This is the best selection to buy of Hawthorne's short stories because it is NOT a selection, it is complete and, if you believe the editor, it's actually more accurate in its assessment of what is and is not a Hawthorne story than some complete collections because he did not include here some stories that his co-editors on the Hawthorne Centenary Edition did want to include. (Hawthorne spent much of his career as an underpaid and unsung magazine writer and some of his work went with no byline and without reprinting at his own choice, so what he wrote is no easy matter to decide.) The stories are, you probably know if you're looking up this book, stark and wonderful. But some of them are also twee and a little fanciful and not so wonderful. That too is instructive. One very useful thing about this volume is that it includes a listing of when each story first saw print in magazine form and when in book form. In that way the reader can chart Hawthorne's development as a magazine writer and a professional which in every possible sense of the word he determined to become and despite some difficult odds finally was. Some of the most beautiful and terrifying stories in the language and a beautiful object to hold in your hand. Expensive, but if you can get it - this is the one to buy.

This book tells how to confront the harasser. If the harassment continues, the legal steps are covered. For an employer, it provides information on policies, complaint procedures, training sessions and monitoring to prevent harassment.
NOLO Press is noted for making legal information accessible to ordinary people. This topic is something that every supervisor and employer needs to be briefed on.

I found the book to be pretty straightforward and easy to read. It gives all the pertinent information on the subject from the law to how to stop sexual harassment to your legal remedies. One of the best features is that provides an array of case studies that clear up a lot of the gray areas. I used the book to help me develop a training on the subject, I recommend it to anyone who needs more info on the subject.

I found a British paperback edition of this book used in 1984. Since then I have sporadically searched for the rest of "The Bandy Papers" (including several searches of Amazon.com) without success.

I have to agree with the other reviewers here that it was absolutely hilarious. Although I can't remember much of the book specifically, I recall that it was full of absurd situations of the "Jeeves and Wooster" sort.

(BTW if you've been under the impression that P.G. Wodehouse wrote some kind of ponderous British literature, you have two surprises in store.) I can't understand why Jack has not enjoyed a much wider audience, and he's going straight to the top of my Christmas wish list.

A hilarious read!

In 1980, I was travelling in Europe and saw "That's Me in the Middle" in a used book store in Copenhagen. I was attracted to it for two reasons--1) It had WWI aircraft on the cover and I like books on that period, and 2) It was in English...I picked it up without a second look.

When I left town on the train, I happened to be in the First Class car. As I settled down and began reading about Bart Bandy, I kept having to go out into the hallway to laugh out loud, so as not to irritate the various German businessmen and French society ladies with whom I shared the compartment. It was the funniest book I had ever read! After laughing for a while, wiping my eyes, and taking a deep breath or two, I would go back into the compartment, sit down, and start reading, only to have to burst out into the hall again in a few minutes.

Since that time, I have managed to find and read all of the Bandy Papers. They are all just as funny, and are true to the hilarious character of Bartholomew Bandy. Donald Jack writes a good historical novel, and creates such a group of idiosynchratic characters that we immediately recognize. Then, he weaves them all into situations that are just plain funny! I would recommend any of the Bandy Papers and, as this was the first I had read, it holds a special place for me.

Enjoy!

Thomas Jefferson's Monticello

Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, an essay in architecture, takes readers on a historical tour of the third U.S. president's cherished home near Charlottesville, Virginia, through well-written text and gorgeous, full-color photography. The book includes floor plans and photographs of Jefferson's original architectual elevations, as well as drawings of the finished building that we are most familiar with today. It describes Jefferson as art collector and plantation life on Monticello's farms, and it explores the four seasons in Monticello's gardens. Published in 2002 by the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, Inc.

Beautiful guide to America's most interesting house

Review Date: 2003-05-03
One of the clichés about Monticello is that few houses do so good a job revealing the personality of its builder. But clichés get to be such generally because there's truth to them, and that's definitely the case here. If Thomas Jefferson was one of the most interesting figures in American history (and I think that's unquestionably true), then Monticello may well be one of America's most interesting houses. And for this colorful book produced by the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, we are guided through the house and grounds by people who know their stuff.

Specifically, the chapters of this title are written by Monticello's director of restoration, the curator, the director of gardens and grounds, and other experts associated with the Foundation. Large, colorful photos are accompanied by informed commentary and all the requisite history, as well as documentation of the decades of restoration work it has taken to get the house and grounds to its current condition. A book doesn't make up for a visit in person -- if anything, I wished for more photos of the interior, especially of the book room and "cabinet." But for a general overview of the house, grounds, and collection, and an insight into the man himself, this book is hard to beat. I recommend it as a souvenir, as well as a nice companion to a Jefferson biography.

I received this as a gift when I was pregnant with my first child, and am buying another for my second baby. When I was asking my parents and my in-laws for stories, I learned so much about them! I'm so glad to have had the chance to learn things about all of us, and to be able to pass it on to my children.

The book includes space to write about the family, but also about the child's growing years -- all the way up to adulthood and marriage!

There were some spaces we couldn't fill in (because we didn't remember or they just didn't apply), but there weren't many.

If you have horses, you need this book. Even if you never plan to harness a horse in your life, you need this book. A greenhorn born in the big city, I found myself making a living in the country with a naughty pony and several untried young horses. I bought books, went to county fairs, talked to old hands. But what got me going in training my own was a combination of common sense, patience via a love of the animals, and this book. Plain and simple.

Lynn's drawings and photos are exactly perfect. He explains everything with just enough detail but never too much. He has a realistic, kind approach that guarantees to turn out a trusting, trustworthy working equine. For instance, using his methods for introducing a harness, I had an untried colt quietly accepting a harness within 20 minutes, with never a raised voice or tense moment, and by myself. Just the way it should be done.

No kidding. This is the book to get.

Shocking revelations of International political manipulation
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 26 total.
Review Date: 2002-12-23
I do not profess to be any sort of expert pertaining to the governmental in-fighting, intrigue and conspiracies within the Israeli, Western & International political spheres, but if only one percent of the revelations illustrated in this book by Barry Chamish are correct, then it is more than sufficient to give serious cause for concern in relation to the security of the Jewish State. Especially when so many of the revelations disclosed here relate to the `peace process'.

At the outset, the author declares that what one will read and access within this book will not be found in the news media. This book will indeed shock many readers. It certainly shocked me.

This is an incredible journal of the scheming, back-stabbing, betrayals, political manipulation & external International interference in matters regarding the present and future status of Israel.

Many International entities are referred to in some detail, including the US & its variety of Governmental Departments, the UK, France & other Western nations, plus numerous Middle Eastern nations including Egypt, Syria, Jordan. Not to mention certain notable elements within Israel's own political arena such as Rabin, Peres, Beilin plus Palestinian figures such as Arafat & his adjutants.

Shortly before writing this review I read in the Jerusalem Post about Shimon Peres' alleged intentions of `redefining' what constitutes a Jew. Elaborating somewhat, the report assigned to the alleged comments of Peres, further outlined that if the `definition' was left to Rabbis, then perhaps moves should be taken to actually `redefine' what constitutes a Rabbi. I was astonished at how someone could even make such a statement. Yet when faced with other revelations such as those so well depicted in this book, surprise should perhaps have been the last sensation to be experienced.

Reading the disclosures here leaves one with a different perception of so many senior Israeli political figures as well as a vast plethora of International figures including US Presidents, Secretaries Of State, UK Prime Ministers & Foreign Secretaries and similar personages from many other senior figures in both the West and Mid-East. I cannot help but ponder on how `paper-thin' the Mid-East peace agreements between Israel and Egypt/Jordan seem to appear.

I have no previous experience in relation to the actual veracity of these disclosures by the writer. However, I also possess two of his other works entitled "The Last Days Of Israel" and "Who Murdered Yitzhak Rabin". Having browsed through these other two books, they too appear to possess `mind-blowing' material.

Whilst the disturbing implications of what one reads here can only attract concern about the manipulation of Israel's affairs, as a Christian who has a deep love for the People & Land of Israel, I personally hold to the words included in the Old Testament Psalm 33; 10-11..."The Lord foils the plans of the nations; He thwarts the purposes of the peoples. But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of His heart through all generations."

In other words, no matter what the politicians/nations conspire or contrive, the Divine Purpose for Israel, it's People & Land, will eventually be fulfilled.

We need more investigative reporters from Israel like Mr. Chamish! It's refreshing to read what's really going on in Israel behind the scenes of the "peace process." Few are courageous enough to expose the self-serving Establishment, but thankfully every generation has flickers of the "eternal flame" of truth. May "Traitors and Carpetbaggers in the Promised Land" serve to stir people up to truly think and question, and come to an independent conclusion, based upon all the facts and not just what we're spoon-fed!

I have been student of the Middle East for the past 40 years and have read hundreds of books on the Arab-Israeli conflict. All of them combined don't add up to what Mr. Chamish done: he has given us the real story, not the propaganda we read in the so-called "free press".

One can only wonder what this man can write for an encore.

I loved the first volume that Mark and Matt put together, and the second was even better. Being a post-GDW-collapse convert to Space: 1889, I didn't even realize that there had been a "Transactions" fanzine. I think that the new format does more justice to the efforts of Mark and the varied authors to improve upon the basic game materials than the fanzine. I think that the second volume would be more useful to those who are looking for more general information on Victorian Era Gaming and not just for Space: 1889. Loved it! Eagerly awaiting the 3rd Volume.

This volume collects the first four issues of the Transactions of the Royal Martian Geographical Society, a formerly-defunct magazine for GDW's late, lamented Space:1889. I regretted not acquiring these issues when they came out, but now I'm glad I waited. This combined edition is greatly superior to the originals: layout is improved, there are more graphics, and it is nice to have everything combined under one set of covers. The articles themselves are good-to-excellent in quality, and are frequently better than the material released for the original game. Many of the authors are professional historians or graduate students of history, and their depth of knowledge shows. The only thing preventing me from giving this product five stars were the facts that a: my copy (and mine alone, it seems, since I spoke with others who purchased this) was a little defective, and b: this product only covers Space: 1889--which was entirely fine by me, but might limit its appeal to other Victorian-era gamers who aren't great fans of the Space: 1889 universe. Future issues will broaden the coverage, I am told.

I am also told that the editors believe that this product was not 100% perfect, and that there is room for improvement. Personally, I don't see how. I found the product to be excellent, and welcome its release. And if volume 2 is going to be better than this, as the editors promise, it will be _extremely_ impressive indeed.

Space 1889 was not the greatest game ever produced. The marketing of the game seemed weak. And, to be perfectly frank (pun intended), many of the illustrations were terrible! But, inspite of that and the demise of GDW (a tragedy in my not-so-humble opinion), the game lives on in the small enclaves here and there, joined by the internet.

I think that really says the ideas behind the game mechanics were brilliant. And I'm grateful to those who produced the game.
