The "I don't know what to write about" journal.Review Date: 1999-09-29
Flip is a very likeable character with a big problem...his teacher wants him to write in his journal EVERYDAY and he doesn't know what to write. The book's format of going from black and white when Flip could not write to a color format when his ideas begin to flow nicely illustrates how the light comes on once you get ideas.
As a teacher I found students nodding their heads in agreement as I read this story to them. Children really relate to Flip's frustrations. Flip's Fantastic Journal is a great book to use with all children, but especially with students who are reluctant writers.

The Long, Strange Journey to "Magonia"Review Date: 2003-07-18
This book takes us to his beginnings. Starting in the late 1950s, just before the ascendancy of De Gaulle and the establishment of the Fifth Republic, when he is an astronomy student and aspiring Science Fiction writer and ends in the immediate aftermath of the publication of PASSPORT TO MAGONIA. Along the way we have a first hand account of the "ufo controversy in america" and elsewhere. Additionally, there are reflections on a convention-bound France, where Vallee has to struggle against senior astronomers serene indifference to computers. Reflection on the US: like de Tocqueville, young Vallee looks upon this country with a mixture of admiration and horror. Here and there, there are insights into the looming computer revolution that would explode in the 1970's and 1980's. Vallee is in France in 1968 and records his take on the student uprising of May and June.
And then of course, there are the accounts of love. Like the entry where Vallee writes that he and his lover have just torn the bed and now he lies in the full flush of "jouissance" thinking "why do i need a vow, when I can still taste in on my lips" (DAMN! Those french know how to live!)
Yes there's a lot to get out of this book than just UFO's. But that is the main topic. We see the defining moment for Vallee when he tracks an anomalous object only to have the senior astronomer summarily tear up the print out. We see Vallee's burgeoning fascination with the subject and his passion that science find an explanation, first corresponding with Aime Michel, then making contact with J.Allen Hynek, Project Blue Book's consultant and at the time still a "skeptic."
The insight into Hynek is probably the most important part of the book. We see the role that Vallee plays in encouraging Hynek to admit that there are unexplained cases. Vallee is there when Hynek gets new of the "Soccoro landing" and sees Hynek in the aftermath of the "marsh gas" fiasco. Vallee's admiration for Hynek is obviousk, but there are also other detail. Hynek's love of the limelight and his pride at having little fringe benefits from the air force like his own jeep and driver. We find out that Hynek was an Anthroposophist (a disciple of Rudolf Steiner) and we see him at his most gullible when he brings back "film proof" of psychic surgery (Vallee & Co. are less than impressed).
Besides Hynek, there is correspondence with John Keel in the full grip of paranoia while dealing with strange happenings in the Ohio River Valley, a brief in encounter with Al Bielek (he of future "montauk project" fame) trying to pass himself off as a government spook, an account of origin, trouble history, and anticlimatic ending of the Condon Committee. But most importantly is the "paradigm shift" that Vallee undergoes as a result of studying the phenomenon from a cautious advocate of the Extraterrestrial Hypothesis (EHT) to a proponent of thinking in terms of Extra-Dimensional Entities and paying close attention to Psycho-Social factors and parallels with folklore and mythology and the backlash he suffers (and continues to suffer) from the "believers" who make up the rank and file of the UFO subculture.
As an added bonus the paperback edition includes the text of the "Pentacle Memorandum" written at the time of the Robertson Committee.
In sum, a first hand history of the UFO phenomenon in the 1960's. When read in conjunction with Jim Moseley's SHOCKINGLY CLOSE TO THE TRUTH and Patrick Huyghe's SWAMP GAS TIMES one can get a very full picture of "UFO history" of the last 50 years.
Really InterestingReview Date: 2002-11-05
Jacques Vallee is a legend in Ufology (study of unidentified flying objects). More than that, he's a true scientist, which is a rarity in "the field". This book takes you through some pivotal moments in UFO history.
You'll learn a lot in this book, not just UFOs, but the meaning of science itself.
Certainly an essential book for anyone studying UFOs... or the possibility of alien life. (Are we alone in the universe?)
On a side note, this books is pricless for all the little tidbits and reflections on Allen Hynek, "The Galileo of Ufology".

Serious stuffReview Date: 2002-12-10
If you are interested in whats "out there" read and learn. If you on the other hand scoff at all mentions of aliens and such, and consider man to be the center and grandest part of the universe, read this man's books with an open mind and you might begin to doubt some long held beliefs. Vallee is quick to dismiss frauds and charlatians, and focus on the real issues. Arresting stuff.

Teacher, Intellect, Poet and hero, Gary Snyder is for you!Review Date: 2001-07-27
The Gary Snyder Reader is a good compilation of his life's work, the variety inside includes essay, interview, and poetry. This book is a well rounded view of his feelings and belief's about nature, and that of the nature of the soul, the nature of man. I agree with other reviews written here about the power of Synder's writing. His is a strong voice which is able to make a terrific argument about everything from the history of the Christian church and some reasons for underlying social perils to making a call for more activism in one's own community. Make a difference, be responsible, see things for what they are, yes this is all there.
There is also the voice of pain, loss, suffering, anger, and very deep love. Above all else, one REALLY gets the feeling that Synder loves, passionately. Gary Snyder is an extremely talented writer and poet. The same voice that won the Pulitzer is still here. Do more than read and enjoy his works, read and be changed.

Nobody's perfect, but this book is. I know - I grew up with it every day, and now I carry this little piece of history with me everywhere. Everyone has something, if not a lot, to gain from any of his books (he's working on more and has been for the last few decades). We should be so lucky when they publish. Can't wait. He's written some darned impressive country music lyric's also! Where's Shania when you need her? As the gallant old man would put it...with silent breath whispering and eye's sparkling eerily, "Keep 'yer eyes peeled...they could be anywhere." But you can find it right here at amazon.com. Congratulations, DAD! I salute you.

Great workbook to help personal bible study!Review Date: 2007-06-09
The book offers many reflective questions for a person or a bible study group to consider. It's great for offering a structure for a lesson, as well as for an individual to really examine what they've learned and reflect on the uses in their own lives for this wonderful study. The spaces to write MAKE you think about the questions and that was a big plus in my own personal study. I think as a study leader, it would also be a great resource to get class participation and to empower your students to do their own study before the class! As for me, I'm going to go back over the beginning and see what I missed the first time!
I believe the workbook could be used as a stand alone study, but I would recommend using the book companion. It offers so much in the lessons, and gives the reader lots to think about.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to find a closer walk with their Savior through prayer.
"Turns a fine little book into an exhaustive personal seminar on every aspect of reaching God through Prayer"Review Date: 2007-06-05
UPDATE: I still give a high rating to this exhaustive workbook (maybe I should say thorough??). However, upon reading closer, I have noticed that the emails to/from God do not read exactly the same in the workbook as in the book. Don't know if that is intentional, but it could be a tad confusing for side-by-side study. Oh, the message doesn't change, but it reads somewhat different. Not a big deal, but deserves a mention. Not sure why this was done. (Donna)
When you see how thorough this workbook is, you will understand why books and workbooks aren't written as one. This workbook is packed, and I do mean packed, with interesting, and sometimes very deep personal questions about God and praying. I cannot imagine the mind that would think up some of these inquiries!
I have only browsed the work book, but it is formated just like the book. There are emails to and from God with questions about prayer. I found that I might ask some of these questions, except that I couldn't think of most of them. Whew!
Here are what I like so far:
1. I dare you to think of a prayer question you'd ask God that's not in here.
2. There are many supplementary questions that weren't in the original book. (Really helpful.)
3. Workbook is PERFECT for group bible study. You will know prayer when you're done!
4. Author seems very bible-based, and delves into deeper theological truths.
5. Will provide very diverse discussion among those who take it seriously.
Here are some things I like less:
1. How come it's much more costly than the book it supplements?
2. NOT light material. This is directed toward serious prayer study.
3. Like the book, Pentecostals will disagree with chapter on tongues.
4. Might be a bit too exhaustive for personal study, unless you have the time. Much more so than Beth Moore, Knowing God, etc.
Hopefully there will be a combined discount with the original book. Good? You bet. But somewhat expensive.
"Not required for appreciating the original book, but leaves no questions on prayer unanswered"Review Date: 2008-06-19
This might be too much for individual study (at least for me), but would be wonderful for group study. This is workshop stuff! Now the question: is this workbook really necessary to get the best from the original book?
No. The book itself is the meat and potatoes. This workbook--though really thorough--is the dessert. One thing for sure, once you've read these two book, there won't be any questions you've ever had that remain unanswered.
"Be sure you use the book along side the workbook!"Review Date: 2007-08-03
Having read the book on which this workbook is founded, I must say that this author stands 110% behind the Bible teaching on prayer, to the degree that (as others have mentioned) some charismatics might get their feathers a bit ruffled.
This workbook is more inductive than explanatory. The book explained. The workbook applies. Knowledge of the Bible is helpful as there are some deep concepts included. But any serious interest in prayer will be met with reflection, insight, and spiritual truths which every child of God is responsible to learn.
Recommended especially for group study.
"If you're into the Kay Arthur type reading, this probably is too deep for you."Review Date: 2007-08-03
I spent nearly a month answering all the questions in this workbook. My, my--talk about thorough--this caused me to examine the subject of praying from every angle.
What I liked:
1. (See above.) I wouldn't have EVER thought of some of these concepts.
2. Follows the book which came out earlier. You can sort of examine prayer without the first book, but it's better if you have it. Amazon usually gives you a deal on both.
3. The theology is very solid. Traditional Baptist, I would say.
4. Doesn't delve into all that Pentecostal 'name it and claim it' stuff. The is strictly solid Bible material. (Thank God for meat and potatos!)
5. The Prayer Journal after each chapter. My workbook is marked up!
6. What it really means to pray in Jesus's name! This is very insightful.
What I didn't like:
1. As someone has said the email messages are worded a little differently (some of them) in the workbook. Same thought though. I really liked 'getting' and 'sending' emails from/to God.
2. That I didn't have (wasn't available) the workbook when I first read the book! Sure would have been helpful.
Good stuff. Deeper insight into prayer than 95% of the stuff available. This is not Kay Arthur stuff. Works great for group Bible study!
I also liked "Dragons, Grasshoppers & Frogs!" too. Best easy reading commentary on Revelation.

A Great help for us struggling Good Stewards.Review Date: 2003-12-02
My sister is now caring for my 88 year old mother, who loves to do her own bookkeeping. Never mind that she may take three days to write a check. Anyway, I told my sister about the journal and she wants one to give mom, as a simple, single source for all her monthly activities.
This book has made a real difference in my busy life and I recommend it highly.
Can't-Do-Without-It Money Management ToolReview Date: 2003-12-04
And then a friend recommended A Good Steward's Money Management Journal.
This journal is a deceptively simple tool that has helped me gain clarity about what's going where, when it has to go there, and what I owe to whom. It's easy to use (and it doesn't take forever to learn or "set up" like online money management things that used to set my head spinning...).
I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who thinks that managing money has to be hard. I did. And now I don't. A Good Steward's Money Management Journal has given me a system I can LIVE WITH. (and a little more sanity around bill paying time!) (and can't we all use a little more of that!?)
