Complete step by step instruction Review Date: 2008-02-15
First, I went on the internet and found one instruction to make a pine needle basket. It was OK, but not clear enough for a beginner like me. The site linked me to this book. I am so glad that I found this book! The instruction is very concise and easy to follow with well illustrated diagrams. Also, it has many beautiful pictures of gorgeous works by the author for your inspiration.
I definitely recommend this book to someone who wants to start a pine basket weaving. Also, for teachers, it is the MUST to have book in the classroom.

Nice thinking packageReview Date: 2007-06-06
So too, Eli Goldratt has taken critical thinking skills from various areas, put a graphical front end on them, and repackaged them with a binding theme he calls Thinking Processes. Not as powerful as De Bono, but certainly in the same ballpark.
Lisa Scheinkopf does quite a marvellous job in providing a didactic introduction to these Thinking Processes. At the end of the day, she unfolds a systematic way of problem solving - and this is, indeed, what the thinking tools are all about.
I understand that Scheinkopf's choice and ordering of chapters was meant to reflect her belief that the individual tools can be used independently of each other. It would have been nice if she had provided a bit more detail showing how the tools complement each other; but, her book, her prerogative. In regard to matters which require the the systematic and complementary use of each and every tool in the toolset, I think Bill Dettmer's provides better insight.
The book is generally clear, with one or two minor slips into obscurity.
I think Scheinkopf falls into the same trap that most authors who present these type of tools. They occasionally have a rush of too much Oxygen to the brain and push their product beyond its elastic limits and start to hand-wave a little too much. In this regard, I find the "So What Test" which forms part of her discussion of Current Reality Trees one of those hand-waving areas. Apart from being something to do with simplifying a current reality tree by means of a review of "entities" from a systems perspective (whatever that really means), I find the actual application of the test as described quite obscure. (As an aside, Bill Dettmer also hand-waves at this point too. I think that both authors attempt to transform craft into some sort of science in a manner which needs a rethink).
Anyway, overall, I think Scheinkopf's work is very good. I think it deserves to be read in support of an understanding of the TOC Thinking Processes, but, it simply isn't enough to read as the only source of understanding. I recommend reading some of Dettmer's work too. Between the two (and Goldratt himself of course), the whole system of TOC and Thinking Processes adds a useful set of tools to problem solving.
Theory of Constraints -- the practical book on the topicReview Date: 2006-10-24
If you've ever wanted to "brainstorm" or "think outside the box," or just want to plan your next big task in a more complete way, but didn't know where to start, this book is for you. It actually offers a lot more than a start: methods, a simple notation, and when to do what in great detail.
A lot of what you read may seem like "just common sense," but perhaps that's what makes it fun: a powerful, verifiable thinking tool that's also simple and makes sense.
You don't have to read the whole book at once. Try reading some, and then applying it. See how it goes.

Teaching Saving Toward a Goal...Review Date: 2007-11-30
I like that Abby is not always spending her money on herself, but sometimes spends it on friends. Toward the end, this idea is again repeated when she has extra money that she chooses to spend on friends, teachers, and family. Appreciating others is a nice subtle message in this book.
The book has a mixture of text and diary like entries which makes it fun for kids to read. Abby tries a few different ways to earn money which are nicely woven into the story. I am always on the look out for books using a fictional story to teach children about money (as they seem to be fairly rare). This was certainly a worthy find.

Before the garage sale, Abby did many things, but she only got a few dollars. So at the gargage sale, she earned $162.75! She could buy rollerblades, new pads and presents for her friends
and family who had help her while she earn money. At the end, she still have little money for herself.(PHOO!)

Something for everyone in poetry!Review Date: 2005-09-27
Absolutely lovelyReview Date: 2004-09-06
I personally prefer poem anthologies where the poetry is from a mix of poets, not just a collection of one poet's work. Americans' Favorite Poems will give you some very famous favorites, and also might surprise you with the works of lesser known (but still wonderful) writers.
What I also loved about this treasure of a book was the comments. Robert Pinsky compiled the poems that people from around the US sent him and printed their comments as to why each poem was their favorite. Reading the comments of all these people - firefighters, students, forest rangers, doctors, homemakers, basically people from all walks of life - is often very moving, entertaining, or surprising (you'll see some of your best loved poems from new and delightful angles). You get a feel for why people love poems as they explain that love, that attachment to a particular poem, in their own words.
Illustrates What Poetry is Really AboutReview Date: 2001-07-31
I must say that my favorite selection in the book was "I May, I Might, I Must" by Marianne Moore mainly because of the reason behind its selection. The only complaint (it isn't much of one) I have about the book is that my favorite "I Thank You God for Most This Amazing" by ee cummings didn't make it, but hopefully, there will someday be a Americans' Favorite Poems Volume II, and it will.
Representative of Americans' taste in poetry?Review Date: 2002-07-13
[sigh]
I'm also suspicious of a "project" that doesn't seem to have been announced widely before it began -- it can't be representative of ALL Americans since all Americans obviously didn't know about it.
All that said, it's a great collection. Through it I met several new poets (new to me)and I certainly enjoyed the ones I was already familiar with. It made me curious, too, about just what the American taste in poetry truly would be. I suspect it would include Ogden Nash and Edgar Allen Poe.
No. I don't think it's representative of the poetic taste of the American public and I don't think it should claim to be so, but I do think it's a great overview of popular poets and a superb collection of poems.
"Americans' Favorite Poems" Is My Favorite Poetry Anthology!Review Date: 2003-07-17
I found so many of my own favorites in this extraordinary collection. I was also introduced to many wonderful new poems, I might never have read. And some of the comments from the folks who submitted the poems, are as moving as the poetry itself. The book emphasizes the pure joy of reading poetry. And poetry appreciation is alive and well in America!
There is Anna Akhmatova's "The Sentence," submitted by a woman from Georgia who remembers her brother "who returned from Vietnam, a broken man of 21," when reading this poem; and Margaret Atwood's "Variation On The Word Sleep," "the most beautiful love poem I have ever read," writes a woman from Queens, NY; Lewis Carroll's "Jaberwocky" is included, with the comment, "Where else can you find a tale of danger, adventure, triumph, and jubilation - all so utterly wrapped in nonsense?" There are wonders printed here, by Ranier Marie Rilke, Alexander Pope, Sir Walter Raleigh, Sylvia Plath, William Shakespeare, Wallace Stevens, Dylan Thomas and Allan Ginsberg...and so many more. It must have been a difficult task, indeed, to select 200 poems from so many worthy submissions.
I recommend this anthology to poetry lovers everywhere, and also to those who do not care for poetry. This collection may change your mind.

Having been peripherally involved as a software release project team member in the past, I knew enough to get my piece of the puzzle delivered. The information in this book allows me to broaden my perspective and actually comprehend the picture I see on the puzzle box cover. The book is written in a straight ahead manner. If you are one who like examples of what is being discussed, then this book is for you. The use of clear definitions makes each topic understandable and the analogies make them memorable. Tables and scripts are used throughout to exemplify each tool and technique. Most useful in practice are the sections that aid in the diagnosing of problems that can be encountered. This book definitely hits its goal of delivering a practical guide into the hands of a software project manager. The only improvement would be to have "handbook" or "guide" placed somewhere on the cover.

Stellman and Greene, begin by showing you the vision and scope document. Then, the authors cover the wideband delphi estimation process. They continue by covering project schedules. Next, the authors show you how to do an inspection. Then, the authors discuss use cases. Then, they show you how to do configuration management. The authors continue by showing you how to test plans. They also introduce you to practices, tools, and techniques to your organization's culture. Next, the authors show you why it is important to understand responsibility, authority and accountability. Then, they show you how to prevent the most common sources of failure in outsourced projects. Finally, the authors show you why it's important to understand when process improvement is useful and when it isn't.
A project manager can use this most excellent book to diagnose and fix the most serious problems that plague software projects. More importantly, this book contains essential project management tools, techniques and practices, which have been optimized to be as straightforward and easy to implement as possible.

The best book for beginner crochet!Review Date: 2007-12-26
I got this kit for Christmas, and started working on the projects right away. To my great delight, the instructions were so simple and very easy to follow. I love the diagrams with the highlighted stitches, so you know exactly where to put your hook for the next stitch. Each step of each project is written out and/or illustrated clearly. When I've followed other patterns, I usually have to rip out a whole round or row of stitches because the unclear instructions made me guess at where to put my hook. While doing these projects, I didn't have to rip anything out!
By the evening, I'd already learned how to do a granny square, crochet a cute little flower... and I'd even completed the whole hat! Granted, I have some experience with crochet so I'm probably a little faster than a true beginner. But I was thrilled with how the patterns turned out and that I didn't have to undo a whole bunch of stitches because the pattern wasn't clear enough.
The kit itself is pretty cute, and makes a great gift. There is quite a bit of yarn (three skeins of the teal stuff and one skein of the lighter-weight periwinkle). I wouldn't mind finding out where to get more of it, because it looks quite nice when it's all crocheted into a project.
Now, if only I could find a book with similar clear instructions to take my skills to the next level...
it couldn't be any clearerReview Date: 2007-11-02
i've only been crocheting now for about six months, but with the basics taught in the book, i'm able to crochet at about an advanced beginner/intermediate level. and i find myself referring back to the book for reference or a simple refresher. i've crocheted scarves, hats, small bags, and a large afghan. i now have three afghans in the works using different sized hooks for each one, as well as different types of yarn.
beware: it's addicting!

To my surprise, the quilts were not lovely. They were exquisite! I went mad about them! and on reading the instructions I found them clear, and the bits and snips of information about the characters and extracts from the novels only added to the charm of the quilt, for they reminded me about the circumstances in the novel around that particular quilt.
I highly reccomend this book, and since I am already starting one of the projects, soon I will add a review about how it was to actually follow the instructions to a neophite. I expect more experienced quilters will have no trouble at all

a courageous havenReview Date: 2005-11-20
A JOURNEY OF HOPE contains the thoughts, poems & stories of the young people whose lives have been taken hostage by HIV; what their dreams & hopes are, & how they cope. It is also a photo album, beautifully recorded by Katja Heinemann, of lost friends, found feelings & the intense high of being alive, being cared for, being among fellow travelers along a dark & demanding path, & the unfettered exuberance of youth that not even a killing disease can quench, if they are in a place that supports them, & Camp Heartland is such a haven.
Become involved, join up & go to their site: campheartland.org, & for those affected by HIV who have been displaced by the hurricane season, make contact -- Camp Heartland is waiting for you.
A Journey of Hope: Inspiring Stories of Courage and Unconditional LoveReview Date: 2007-07-16
A Journey of Hope is filled with stories, poems, and thought from the councillors, volunteers, parents, and children who have attended Camp Heartland. Many of the children also share their stories of living with HIV. Some of the pieces also represent eulogies to friends who lost their battle.
This book seeks to educate the public about HIV and AIDS. It would seem that ignorance, fear, and judgment continue to be major part of the myth of HIV. To break down these myths, HIV is given a face, a name, and a story. Profits from the sale of this book support the projects of Camp Heartland.

As a person living with chronic illness, I have been deeply touched by this book. I expect it will be a source of strength to families grappling with any chronic illness, especially those affected by HIV/AIDS.

Meet Stacey, a 14 year-old living with HIV that was passed on to her at birth. She's grateful that she's lived as long as she has. And then there's 13 year-old Peaches, who struggles valiantly every day to take the medicine she needs to keep her alive. Read the stories of 14 year-old twins, Sheridan and Shane, whose mother contracted the disease after they were born. Could you survive the pressure and ridicule that they must endure on a day to day basis? And what of the kids who contracted the disease from blood transfusions, and who are now dealing with multiple diseases - AIDS, Hemophilia, Hepatitis, or others.
A JOURNEY OF HOPE is a book like no other, with beautiful and poignant photographs interspersed with stories, poems, and art from the pens of the campers themselves. Neil's commentary throughout takes the reader on a rollercoaster of love and grief, leaving them with the certainty that more must be done to help these children ignored (sometimes purposely) in our society.
The story of these children is heartbreakingly poignant. Many of them are grateful for the lives they've been given. Most of them stoically accept the fact that they may never graduate high school or marry or drive a car. They struggle with rigorous medication schedules that make them feel ill. And, almost without exception, they long for love and acceptance. "We want to stop lying to our friends and families," they say. Or, "I wish people weren't afraid to touch me."
Neil Willenson and his courageous volunteers aren't afraid to touch, love, and give meaningful life experiences to these children. There aren't many people like Willenson in this world and his story needs to be told. Loudly. Clearly. And to as many people as who are willing to hear it.
A JOURNEY OF HOPE is a touching and informative book that will change any reader's views of the world around him. It will make the reader want to be a better person. Not only do I highly recommend this book, I challenge you to find the strength to open yourself up to it.
