this is a good book for small business startup. It goes from defining a server to managing the server and includes everythign between that period. From trends to comparisons of operating systems. It also talks about scalability and has 2 troubleshooting chapters which are pretty helpful. Again it is best for small start up business rather than an individual.

This is an average book. But I liked the Distributed Algorithms by Nancy Lynch better. It is a much better presented book that this one though most of the material covered is the same give or take a few. Over all a good book worth the money but there are better books.

A good book, but too much formal method

I am a Ph.D Candidate, majored in Multimedia Communication. This book provides the reader with some very important principles and fundamental knowledge about the design of distribuited multimedia systems. It is a good book for the researchers and graduate students majored in multimedia communication architecture. You must have enough knowledge about CORBA, DCE, ODP and multimedia communication. If you just want to get some general knowledge about ODP, do not read it.

Reasonable survey, little original content
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-08
I found this collection to be a reasonable overview of developments in P2P networking over the last 6 years.

However this is little original content in any of the papers. In some cases there is *no* original content. As a survey (which to be completely fair, this is what the back cover of the book claims it is) this is a fairly comprehensive work.

However, it would be nice if the authors had taken the time to study their topics in more depth and provided some value added beyond collating existing work.

Detailed Brochure

Review Date: 2002-06-01
This book does not give much information on implementing PeopleSoft technically. Rather, it's a book that advertises the capabilities of PeopleSoft and its different Modules. This book teaches consultants how to do project management rather than how to use peopletools. I would not recommend this book for technical people. It's a book for consultants, who wants to know things to consider in implementing peoplesoft, what resources are needed and how to go about with a project. But it won't teach you how to really use peoplesoft.

Good reference book for SAP Implementation
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2002-08-31
This book's orientation is different from many other SAP books. The target segment for this book appears to be prospective SAP Consultants aspiring to be involved in implementation of projects, personnel in the Implementing organisation whose services will be used in implementation and end user. These days many people get trained/ acquire knowledge in SAP modules such as FI-CO, Logistics, SD, HRMS, etc by attending training courses in various Computer Training Institutes. Some even work as Trainee Consultants in some organisations. The real-life Implementation experience is all together different from what these people learn in Institutes. I feel that this book will be certainly helpful to fill such gap between real-life Implementation exp and learnings. At least, the book will enable the reader what to do when he is put in the project for the first time. Good points abt this book: 1. It gives good view of R/3 architecture 2. Giving ideas about possible Implementation issues that can arise 3. Inputs for preparing a good SAPper CV 4. Employment opportunities in SAP. Negative points: Jack of all, master of none! Inadequate coverage of various modules, which is understandable!

Conclusion: The user level is mentioned as Intermediate to Advanced in the back cover, but I feel that this book is only suitable to Beginners to Intermediate level.

Jack of all master of none..

This was my first book on SAP, it did help to get an overview nothing more. If you're planning to ge t specialized in ABAP or any Module then better forget this one.

Thousands of pages of bulletted lists. Useless.

Someone mentioned that it is a thousand page brochure. Right on the (wasted) money sir! I bought this book to gain some insight into SAP. But this book was a great disappointment. Words don't come to me to describe my disgust after wasting 75 dollars on this book. Just because SAP knowledge isn't easily available, people like me keep wasting our money on whatever is available in the market. I have learned my lesson, now I spend a couple of hours sitting in Barnes and Noble before making a decision to buy.

The only reason I give it one star is ... there is no option to give a zero star.

Worthless in regards to Basis module...

Lame result of an ambitious and wordy project. The book targets a too broad audience and in the process it misses much of its value. Nevertheless, this book has a virtue as a good source of reference for SAP project management and business process overviews.

Plenty of non-working code
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-08
I lost a lot of time reading this poor book and trying to run incomplete code. The line followed by the author is very confusing. He is always trying to approach a lot of things at the same time. I think a better help with working examples would be Java Distributed Objects by Richard Soley. I would give a zero-star review for this.

Not worth the money at all

Given the explanations included in that book, I can't imagine anybody would learn anything but vague concepts about networking you would find much better documented in many other (much better) books. The mere 12 pages dedicated to CORBA for instance won't teach you anything, unless you have never heard about it before. Not worth even opening it.

This book is a waste of time & money, no quality control

Do not buy this book. The code is full of bugs and does not appear to be tested by the author. You will spend ... and waste many hours trying to get the code to complie. The code is not very well explained in the text. Overall, the book is very disappointing, and really a huge waste of time.

O'Reilly have a big turkey here. Save your money - buy something else.

Very good, read it

The people below slamming this book should have taken the time to finish reading it. After reading the first two or three chapters, I thought it was pretty weak (and there are a few bizarre tangents the author takes in there, too). But the book as a whole is very good, especially the later chapters and the downloadable source code (how nice to have code that actually works!).

Good Overview of Distributed Programming in Java
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-30
In general, this book will give you quite a good overview of distributed Programming in Java. It covers many subjects from sockets to security. Some of the subjects like sockets and RMI are explained fairly well, but others that are complex like CORBA and Security are not explained in detail. The nice part about this book is that it gives a good overview of most API's and subjects related to Distributed Computing in Java. For people, looking for a clear book with lots of examples and details on this subject, this book is NOT for you. This book is not excatly EASY to read and its definately NOT full of examples, BUT if you are patient enough while reading, you will learn quite a lot from this book. I also warn you that you may need to read other books on some subjects in this book like CORBA to be able to understand them well. In conclusion, if you are a newbie that wants to learn distributed programming in Java I suggest that you buy this book ALONG with another one that is clear and easy.

Old guide with outrageous price

Review Date: 2006-11-29
Several years ago I got some help from this book to understand the basic principles of BW. This book is currently very outdated. The outrageous part is that the publisher reprinted the book recently with a 50% increase in the price, without updating the content at all.
If the authors publish a new edition, I'll be the first one to buy it.

Seriously outdated

Man, you can't keep selling the same book forever and keep everyone satisfied. I liked the way they presented the idea of BW, but it was seriously outdated. They should make enhancements and upgrades atleast one in two years

Step by Step guide to where?

Anybody buying this book to learn some BW will be very much disappointed. Like the way the book is organised but older stuff. I can't beleive the greedy publiser is still selling this book. Not only they should stop selling, also should recall the book.

Navigation in 2.0 and nothing more...

Disappointing in both structure and content; surprising thing, cosidering that the authors come with substantial credentials.

It is more of an end-user self-training package targeting the individuals that want to memorize and troubleshoot their way through the setup rather that providing a step-by-step business case driven scenario.

Unfortunately the release that make the subject of the book is already obsolete (well, this is not authors' fault).

The CD-ROM attached to it is of little if any use;
