Once again I found your characters most delightful, Doc and Ray are charmers! Lew continues on the path of justice and I like the introduction of the lawyer (lady lawyer that is).

Please continue to keep us contacted to Loon Lake's adventures.

I HAVE READ ALL OF THE BOOKS IN THE LOON LAKE SERIES.EACH NEW INSTALLMENT GIVES MORE DEPTH TO THE CHARACTERS. THE PLOT ALSO HAS DEVELOPED IN EACH BOOK. WHILE NOT OVERLY COMPLICATED THERE IS PLENTY GOING ON TO RETAIN MY INTEREST.AS AN AVID FISHERMAN I LOOK FORWARD TO THESE BOOKS IN MUCH THE SAME WAY AS GOING OUT ONTO THE WATER.

Paul "Doc" Osborne should have remembered that no good deed goes unpunished. So when he agrees to help his friend Ray Pradt lead a "Fishing for Girls" fishing seminar Doc should have expected the worse. When one of the student's mother, a famous syndicated advice columnist, is found murdered, Doc is once again deputized and asked by the Loon Lake Chief of Police to help out with his forensic dental skills. Ray complicates matters as he begins to fall for one of his very married students who has a tragic past of her own, and soon Doc is up to his neck in murder and family secrets. Chief Ferris herself has her hands full with her run for Lake County Sheriff, a counterfeit money scam, and a cold case murder. Readers will be taken along as events roll along quickly to a very tidy and satisfying end.

This continues to be a strong series with no hint of letting up. Houston has created characters who continue to grow and readers will be thrilled with the evolution of Doc's romance with the lovely sheriff. Dead Jitterbug is an extremely entertaining mystery full of humor, fishing lore, wit, and suspense.

Great story, but more fishing!

Like all the rest of Victoria Houston's books in the "Dead" series, I really enjoyed Dead Jitterbug. But I missed the light-heartedness tone that preceded it in the others, and, there seemed to be a little less fishing. But all-in-all, it's great, and I'm still awaiting the next! Keep 'em coming!

Ray Pradt is a fishing guide in Loon Lake, Wisconsin. Ray's newest idea is a two-day seminar called "Fishing for Girls". He manages to rope Doc Osborne, his neighbor, into helping him with the excursion for the girls on a new pontoon Ray is trying to sell. Doc agrees to help out but is soon pulled away from this project to help Police Chief Lewellyn Ferris. Doc Osborne's many years as a dentist and resident of Loon Lake has been a big help to Chief Lewellyn in various investigations and Chief Ferris is not slow to call on Doc for help. They are also fishing buddies and sometimes lovers.

Hope McDonald, mother of one of Ray's "seminar girls", and the author of a syndicated advice column, is found dead in her home in Loon Lake. Then it is discovered by Doc and Lew that another of Ray's "seminar girls" Molly O'Brien formerly Molly McBride whose parents resided in Loon Lake and were brutally murdered. Molly was left alone in the home with the bodies of her parents when she was only two and a half. Now twenty-seven years later Molly is back in Loon Lake and married. Lillie Wright, local attorney, is now asking Chief Ferris to try to dig up the old files and renew the investigation for the murder since Lillie believes the person convicted was framed and the murderer is still in town and Molly is beginning to believe it too.

As if all of this isn't enough to keep Chief Ferris busy she is also asked to help locate a couple who have been robbing banks. The Chief is also in the midst of a campaign for Sheriff and Doc Osborne's daughter is her campaign manager.

Victoria Houston's vivid descriptions of the area and the residents love of fishing adds much to the story. This is the sixth Loon Lake mystery and each one gets better. Be sure and read them all.

Bonhoeffer: Man For His Times & Ours

Upon starting this book I knew very little about Bonhoeffer; I had read some of Ethics and I knew of his murder by the Gestapo. Thus, there was something new on every page for me, and despite the book's length it never seemed oppressive in detail. In fact if the author can be faulted for one thing it is his lack of information about Bonhoeffer's courtship and engagement; which is discussed almost as an aside. On every other point though, the author did a wonderful job. His explanations of Bonhoeffer's theology are clear and understandable. Considering that much of what Bonhoeffer took for granted, theologically speaking, is alien to the American intellectual tradition that is a great accomplishment. The book is also a welcome antidote to the conception of 1930's and 1940's Germany as synonymous with Hitler and National Socialism. For even under the totalitarian state there were still men like Bonhoeffer who stood up against the regime

A classic -- Bethge is indispensable

Eberhard Bethge was Dietrich Bonhoeffer's closest friend and the lifelong editor and interpreter of his life and writings. For the first time we now have the completely unabridged biography in a revised and updated English translation. This is not only a classic of twentieth century biography; it also addresses key issues not only of German and European history, World War II, and the Holocaust but also, through Bonhoeffer's theology, the church and modernity. It sharply poses the question of authentic Christian life. A big book and a challenging read!

About 20 years ago, I read an older translation of this biography. Then, as now, a reader cannot help but be impressed by the thorough and meticulous scholarship that went into its preparation. Because of its size and scope (900+ pages), it may be somewhat daunting to new readers who may be just now encountering Bonhoeffer. However, given the nature of his literary output (Bonheoffer was still a young man when he died, and many of his ideas exist only in limited or underdeveloped forms), this in-depth look at the man and his motivations by the individual who probably knew him best is essential to an informed understanding of his work. For Bonhoeffer admirers, it doesn't get any better than this.

Bethge was Bonhoeffer's closest friend and colleague. He devoted his life to bringing Bonhoeffer to the world's attention. This expanded volume, in remarkable ways, weaves together Bonhoeffer's life and his theological insights. In this 100th anniversary of the birth of this 39 year old martyr, this long book deserves careful reading, even my those who have read Bethge's somewhat shorter version published a number of years ago.

An outstanding, detailed and gripping story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Christian fortitude. Eberhard Bethge's exquisitely detailed knowledge and references about Bonhoeffer's life, from beginning to end is a wonderful tribute to Bonhoeffer. The reader asks the question what possessed Bonhoeffer to pursue the dream of a restive German society with Christianity abounding. Unless one has lived under a dictatorship perhaps this makes one restless. This book provides clear and concise answers.

This is amazing- a really comprehensive history of western jewelry from the Victoria and Albert Museum collection. The photography is just primo, and any jeweler or gem mad type needs this book. The text is clear and super informative. As a part time jewelry maker I find this an amazingly inspirational reference work, the pictures are so good you can see tool marks and technique. Period portraits illustrate fashion and the use of jewelry in different forms at different times.
Highly reccomended- and just plain pretty to boot. Even you all who just like to look at beautiful things will thoroughly enjoy this book.

A colorful look at a diverse gallery of pieces

"Jewels and Jewelry," by Clare Phillips, is loaded with full-color photographs of a rich assortment of jewelry. The introduction notes that most of the pieces pictured are on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum. The book is divided into 3 main sections: "Materials," "Chronology of Style," and "Manufacturing and Distribution."

The book includes many informative and well-illustrated spreads on a number of topics: the pendants of the Renaissance, pieces celebrating Queen Elizabeth I, 18th century paste jewelry, the Art Nouveau style, etc. The book covers jewelry made from a rich variety of materials--gold, pearls, emeralds, cast glass, brass, coral, platinum, steel, etc. There are even pieces made from such startling material as a real fish head or recycled bus stop signs!

The book portrays the work of an international gallery of artists, together with interesting biographical facts about these creators. Among the many designers included are Gijs Bakker of Holland, Wendy Ramshaw of England, Fritz Maierhofer of Austria, Yasuki Hiramatsu of Japan, and more. Some really unforgettable creations are pictured, ranging from elegant pieces with a traditional flavor to futuristic or quirky pieces. Overall, a superb book that truly celebrates the tremendous imagination and skill of the world's jewelry makers.

This book goes into alloys. Mixing copper with gold turns it red, silver turns it green, arsenic turns it blue or grey. White gold the author says, is barely gold at all, it is simply silver with gold _added_ to keep it from looking too much like silver. Very helpful for jewelry buying as well as jewelry making, as I could use this to know how to extract silver or copper, assuming I manage to separate the two.

I must have a dozen books on jewelery and the history of jewelery. This is the best yet. First off the book very clearly organized. On any page that you might flip to there is a short chapter with a title, photos and supporting text. For instance, the section called "Jewelled Bouquets" shows five full color photos of flower themed broaches, descriptions of each an a well written history of the beautiful little things. Much of the jewelery is supported with photos of period portraits, to further illustrate how the pieces were worn. It's a wonderful, wonderful book and I'm not surprized to find it's from the fabulous Victoria and Albert Museum.

historical romance with focus on romance
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-09
Louisa Elliott was a good historical romance with more of a focus on romance than history. The story focus is on the romance of an illegitimate woman, Louisa Elliott with a Royal Dragoon captain, Robert Duncannon. Louisa's cousin (also illegitimate) is secretly in love with Louisa as well.

I enjoyed the characters, but I thought that Robert was the most richly drawn character. I thought that Louisa's cousin Edward wasn't very believable as a real person--seemed very flat. Louisa's choices through out the novel are not believable at times. Charlotte wasn't a very believable character, either. I also had a problem with the first cousins in love.

I would have enjoyed more background information on the Royal Dragoons, and some of the military conflicts going on in the background becoming more of a focus of the story.

I would recommend this to someone who enjoys historical romances, not historical fiction with a bit of romance.

This has got to be one of my favorite books of all time! A great deal is set in York, England (love that city!) and Ms. Roberts' excellent descriptions can make you see what it must have been like in the 19th century. Her characters come to life! By the time you've finished the book, you feel like you've made new friends!

I read both Louisa Elliott and Mornings Gate, the sequal and just loved them both! The dual time line in Mornings Gate was done in such a way, that you just wanted to cry when the time line shifted. Then, you get so engrossed in the other time line, you have to cry again when that ends. I loved Liam, and almost burned our Thanksgiving turkey in the oven: I was too upset and involved in the story! Both are fantastic reads, and MUST reading!

I have just finished reading Louisa Elliott and Mornings Gate for the second time (within a period of 3 years). Mornings Gate is the continuation of the story about the Elliott family, with the children growing up, maturing and going into war. Each time I did not want the story to end. I love the Elliott family and especially Liam. The love story of Liam and Georgina was beautiful, and Ms. Robert's description of the battlefields and fighting in "the war to end all wars," World War I, was so real, it could be happening now.

These books were very powerful and real to me. I am filled with sadness that there is no more to tell about this family -- unless the modern-day romance of Zoe and Stephen and their search of their Elliott family roots could develop into another book!

I highly recommend this book. I am an architecture student, and I have found this book to be interesting, useful, and full of great projects. The book does a nice job of talking about the history, uses, strengths, and weaknesses of building materials. The book is organized by material with building projects that utilize those particular materials in an innovating and interesting way. The photos are great and the detail drawings are very nice to see as well.

It is a great resource for material detailing AND design inspiration. Wa-hoo-wa, Victoria Bell, great job.

Materials Control Design

Review Date: 2006-08-19
Architecture is an interesting mix of enginnering and art. All too often one of these is emphasized too much at the expense of the other. If too much art is emphasized, it is easy to design structures that cannot be built with the materials being specified.

This book is an attempt to bring the two together. It is broken down into five sections: Glass, concrete, wood, metals, and Plastics. In each category there is some description of the material itself, its history, and some generalized design characteristics. Then there is a set of descriptions of buildings built using that material. Each building is deacribed in some detail, photographed from several views and in most cases contain some line drawings of particular points of construction being used.

Obviously this is an idea book that can be used in the early phase of design when the broad concepts are being discussed. The designs in the book stretche the normal thoughts in design with the particualr materials. It is far more interesting than most as it also stretches shat can be done with these materials.

I'm not normally clammoring to write a review, but I have to say, this book is awesome. Have you ever finished reading a book and you've got this goofy grin on your face 'cause the journey was that much fun? That's how I felt after reading No Daugher of the South. There were a couple times I laughed out loud so hard, my girlfriend looked at me like I'd lost my mind. So what goes through *your* mind when you get to thinking way too much? Laurie's got to deal with the South, identity, love, sex, an ex-husband, racism, homophobia, coming out, really dysfunctional families, AND the KKK - while solving a mystery, figuring out what the hell is going on in her life, and making me laugh all at the same time. Let's just say I can totally relate to her ability to get into way too much trouble, just by being herself. She's got a hot head, and I had a whole lot of fun going along for the ride. I recommend this book to anyone regardless of orientation, ethnicity, or whether you're a mystery fan. It's just a darn good read!

Nobody does it better.

No Daughter of the South is a bright, funny, insightful, and unconventional mystery about a woman journalist investigating the murder of a black man in the small southern town where she grew up. As a woman who also grew up in the south, but never fit in, I could identify with Cynthia Webb's fiesty, free-spirited protagonist Laurie Coldwater. All Webb's characters are absolutely believable--I felt as though I knew them personally. And the environment she depicts--the south in the '90s, caught between its old prejudices and its new role as a haven for "snowbirds"--is rich and complex. I thoroughly enjoyed this provocative story and look forward to reading more of Webb's work in the future.

I agree - great book!

This book was such a joy. I'm an Anglophile and I have an old house that I use as a bed and breakfast so I enjoyed the circumstances but what moved me the most was the trials that women of an age feel. They are not usually the subject of novels and this one with it's warmth and heart touched me deeply.

I can't say enough good things about this book - I sat up until 3 am today to finish it. I guess the traditional elements of a romance are here, but the book seems just so much more than that. It starts with the death of Miranda's chronically unfaithful husband - and proceeds to show how the life and death of this selfish, ugly man(soul-wise, not physically) is like a pebble in a pool - the ripples of effect go on forever. There's pain and humor, and not all of the ends are neatly tied up - just the ones that matter the most to you at the end. The subplots and supporting characters are superb - wonderful book!..

A great summer read.

Miranda Stowe's life is turned upside down by the apparent suicide of her constantly unfaithful husband, Jack. With little in the bank, and a growing number of mouths to feed, she decides to take paying guests into her somewhat dilapidated manor house, meeting a cast of colourful, and sometimes eccentric, guests in the process. Liberated from her marriage, Miranda finds that she and her new business bloom and that, unfortunately, all the wrong types of men seem to be attracted to widows...

Past Mischief is a delicious social comedy, with an endearing selection of characters. But there is nothing overtly sugary about Clayton's blend of love, sex, friendship and the trials and tribulations of life. The novel is a pleasure to read and will have readers returning to thumb through its pages time and again, eager to reacquaint themselves with the characters and plot contained within. I really enjoyed this book, it's a great summer's read with an unusual amount of charm, dash and verve.

I like the book better than many of my artist model books as many of them fuzz out the private regions! this book is about yoga, pure and simple, in the buff and captures graceful women and thier art.

My only problem was that the woman are all athletic and strong and make yoga look like it is only for the well built when yoga is for everyBODY.

I am very much a believer in the power and beauty of the female form, which this book portrays flawlessly. The poses these women can get into are amazing, and you can see their joy and energy in every image. Yes, the figures are nude, but even if you're squirrely about nudity, the photographs are so beautiful and the representations so tastefully done that you'd almost have to be crazy to be offended by them. Besides, yoga pants and track suits don't exactly portray the awesome beauty of the female body.:) Definitely check this book out.

I really enjoy looking at this book and seeing the amazing positions these women can achieve with their own bodies. For me, it is a reaffirmation of the strength all women carry inside them. Highly recommended for photogs, yoga lovers, and art lovers everywhere!

As autumn is quickly turning to winter, a leaf reflects on his life as a vibrant green leaf. To his surprise, he discovers that he has worth in his "later days," too. This is an allegory about living life to its fullest ... and accepting the surprises along the way. This is a fun read, but will be particularly great come fall, when it will be easy to bring the book to life. It is a nice reminder that we are only limited by the perceptions we create for ourselves. The book offers several layers of learning, depending on the child's age: what happens in the fall, how life changes, and self-esteem. It wouldn't take much to draw lessons about aging parents/grandparents from the story, too.

A moving story about discovery and finding meaning

What could well become a classic children's picturebook for young readers ages 4 to 8, A Simple Brown Leaf is the collaborative effort of author L. J. Davis and illustrator Lisa Victoria. This is the story of an old autumn leaf caught by a squirrel preparing for winter's onslaught. The leaf's journey reveals that its life has more than one purpose. When it was young and green, it was part of the tree; when it turned brown and fell, the squirrel needed it to survive the bitter cold of winter. A moving story about discovery and finding meaning. "You are meant to do something wonderful! Someone loves you! Someone needs you... just like the squirrel needed the simple brown leaf."

A Simple Brown Leaf is a fantastic piece of work that promotes character development in an artistic and poignant way. Ms. Davis clearly understands the need of today's youth for self-confidence and a sense of self-purpose. As a school teacher I see children each day struggle with insecurities and apathy as they fight to find their place in society. I highly recommend this book to parents and school teachers as a platform for encouraging and strengthening our young people.

I agree that this book could become a classic. Its simple storyline will attract the young and its eternal truth--that every age has a purpose--will appeal to people of all ages. It is exquisitely crafted and the illustrations reflect the mood superbly. I read it to my two grandchildren ages 7 and 9 and they asked me to read it again. Than they took it off to their room to read again on their own. Highly Recommended!

When I first started reading lesbian fiction this was one of the first books I read. It was sweet and had an "innocent" view of how some people find out who they are. The harsh realities of the time period were initially shocking to me, helped me understand alot about history that isn't in books. Suicide attempts are often part of anybody who isn't "normal" and parents need to realize that especially. The fear of rejection is very real especially when you decide to date or try to find somebody to date.

Excellent for older dykes who remember HOW it was.

Bravo, Sarah Dreher. In these post-Sonewall, post-feminist movement days, it's been easy to forget just HOW it was. Yes, we were committed to mental hospitals or somebody in the family tried to have us committed; yes, we were fired from jobs and evicted from apartments; yes, our friends, once told, were no longer friends and, YES, good old Mom and Dad not only had the proverbial cow; they killed it too. (Figuratively, of course, by banning us from the bosom of the family so others wouldn't catch "it".) Yes, we blamed ourselves for our lesbianism and KNEW everything would be okay if we could just get rid of this blasted disease. Unfortunately, for most of us - despite the marriages and children and shock therapy, etc., recommended by the shrinks and/or family to get us over this stage - nothing worked. We stayed gay and learned to live with it for better or for worse. I've got a hunch your wonderful charcters in "Solitaire and Brahms", Shelby and Fran, learned to live with it for the better. What a great ending! And now, as I look back to then from the pages of your excellent book and remember how it was, I'm glad nothing worked, glad I'm a dyke and VERY glad I survived those years. A must-read for those who lived how it was, or those up-coming youngsters who would like to know how it was.

Honest, insightful, and not loaded with lesbian stereotypes.

I really loved this book. I read it twice and I NEVER read fiction twice. I actually want to read it again, just to relive and feel the geniune love (without all the hangups or gender identity issues) growing between Fran and Shelby. The thing I enjoyed most about this book was that it, unlike the majority of books in this genre, was free of the common lesbian sterotypes. It was a genuine love story. It wasn't a story about girl meets girl at bar, girl sleeps with girl afterwards, girls thinks she's in love with bar girl. (rolleyes) It also wasn't a story about promiscuity and superficial relationships between women. Nor was it a story of a relationship based on possessiveness, dependency, or insecurity.

Shelby Camden is an educated, unmarried young women, who is trying to make it as an editor. She behaves how she thinks she is supposed to behave and does a lot of people pleasing and yet is so unhappy. She meets her new neighbor, Fran Jarvis, and a ray of sunshine suddenly enters her life. She loves spending time with her new friend, and feels as though she can just BE HERSELF around Fran. This is freedom for Shelby. She's light, happy, and carefree. When she is in the company of people and situations where she doesn't feel free to simply be who she is, and feels she has to present a certain image, her health suddenly is compromised. As the book progresses Shelby is able to take a good look at herself and her life and realize what/who she wants in it, and what/who she no longer wants in it. She toughens her backbone and stands up for herself and courageously goes after want will make her happy and lets go of all that will not. Cheers Shelby!

This novel gives and insightful look on how it was to be a lesbian or show any romantic attraction for another women at that time. The novel describes how social attitudes affected those with 'lesbian tendencies' psycholigcally, socially, and otherwise.

Fran was a woman who knew that she preferred other women romantically. She knew who she was and did her best to be happy and deal with the world around her who didn't approve of who she was. Shelby did was she thought she was supposed to do. She didn't categorize her sexual orientation. Real Love came to her and she welcomed it. Even after, she didn't feel the need to define who she was. In the end, this is a story about two people who fell in love with each other. No classifications needed.

I highly recommend this book.

Having only read Deher's Stoner McTavish Series, which I enjyoyed immensely, I thoroughly enjoyed the poignant story of Shelby and Fran. Not having experienced lesbian life before Stonewall, I found it a valuable slice of history as well as a really good story. I look forward to more of Deher's work.

Oh, yes, for those of us old enough to remember, this is a searing book! If you can't remember, you might want to be real glad. It captures exactly the feelings and ambiance of the late 50s and early 60s. This was NOT a time to be a lesbian, even for those of us who could be nothing else, and who went ahead and got married anyway.
