Take me by surprise...

"Grave Alice, and laughing Allegra,
And Edith with golden hair.

A whisper, and then a silence:
Yet I know by their merry eyes
They are plotting and planning together
To take me by surprise."

The above is from Longfellow's poem. The novel is about a Victorian piano teacher that comes to a spooky house to teach Edith, Alice and Allegra. This is a good mystery/suspense. You will be taken by suprise...

Suspenseful, Old School , Governess Gothic romance

This is a perfect "governess gothic".
There are all the necessary mystery elements. The tortured, misunderstood hero, who may have murdered his unwilling bride. The intrepid widowed music teacher with her own secrets and regrets. The three female pupils with their mysterious origins and loyalties.
And the dangerous quicksands and Roman ruins that border the Lovat Stacy Estate.
The plot: who/what is responsible for the missing young women. The heroine's challenge: determining innocence, guilt and deceit in a closeknit, self protective community. Can she stay alive, solve the disappearances and find true love?
I think that this is one of Holt's most entertaining novels. It works as a romance and a mystery.

An awesome story! Original, creative, entertaining, and deep. Not your typical fantasy, there is a great deal of depth, emotion, and spirituality present all the way through. If you enjoy Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and the like, try this book!

A feast for the eyes

This book is a very good resource for the study of 18th century fabric design, especially of English (Spitalfields) silks. The introduction outlines the change of tastes through the century, two chapters give backround information on the formation of the design collection at the V&A and the biographies of the designers, and the rest is just plates, plates, plates. Wonderful plates! Not just pictures of fabrics, mind you, but of the original watercolours - and their artistic quality, on top of the inventiveness they exhibit, make me go green with envy.

An indispensable guide to women who write mystery series.

I loved the first Silk Stalkings, and am thrilled with the new edition, which contains well-researched, cross-indexed information about my favorite kind of author--women who write series mysteries. The book is cross-referenced and chock full of information, not the least of which are lists of authors with all their psuedonyms for those who write under more than one name. I couldn't do without this book.

One of Holt's best

The Silk Vendetta is one of Victoria Holt's best books. Mixing intrigue, mystery, romance and suspense, she weaves a compelling tale round the heroine Lenore, who grows up at The Silk House. The background of the silk trade is engrossing, and Lenore's character is compelling as she deals with the two men in her life, Philip - likeable and kindhearted- and Charles, as cruel as he is handsome. But as always with Victoria Holt, all is not as it seems, and Lenore has to go through a succession of adventures before finding true love. If you like your romances sevred up with plenty of adventure, then read this book. If you've read other Victoria Holt books then you'll know what I mean, and if you haven't, you're in for a treat.

The Everyday Life of a Skunk

A very interesting book from the Smitsonian. It details an everyday life of a your average skunk. It really is quite interesting, more than you think. The skunk meets an opossum, and some other animals and sprays one. The audio tape includes real animals sounds. I'd never heard a skunk make a sound before nor an opossum. Really interesting.

Hats off to Victoria Valentine for pulling together some of the finest writers, artists, and poets of their craft. Front to back Skyline Reviews cover is impeccable and elegant, and the various genre of fiction shorts are titilating indeed. The only way I can describe how I felt while reading the poetry would be to say, it was like tasting a fine wine while enjoying an exquisite french entree. Skyline Review Anthology makes an excellent addition to any book lover's collection.
