I love medical mysteries and am always looking for new authors-and this one is great!! Very suspenseful with unexpected turns-it certainly kept my interest. I found it accurate from a medical viewpoint, particularly looking at the fields of anesthesia and addiction. I can't wait for her next book!!

A true story of murder and love that knew no bounds
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 1998-08-29
Most people are familiar with the 1994 movie by New Zealand director Peter Jackson, 'Heavenly Creatures' which stared Kate Winslet (of 'Titanic' fame) and Melanie Lynskey. 'Daughters of Heaven' is the play that the film was based on. On June 22 1954, on a secluded track in Christchurch's Victoria Park, Juliet Marion Hulme and Pauline Yvonne Parker bludgeoned Pauline's mother to death with a brick in a stocking. They were 15 and 16 years old. The play takes place, mostly, in the courtroom, with flashbacks of the events leading up to the murder of Honora Parker, to outline the evidence of the 'Killing of Mrs. Parker' to the audience (the court). It is both a story of a severly English-influenced New Zealand city being turned upside down by a cold blooded murder at the hands of two schoolgirls, and a story about love - the sweeping away of reason and morality in a crazy devotion. Juliet Hulme says, "We had the right to do what we needed to do in the interests of our own happiness". The play, in my opinion, is far more superior to the movie. The script is moving and repelling all at once, because as it seems like fiction, it is not. Most of the things said in the play are exactly as they were said in 1954. All of Pauline's diary entries are factual, as are the things said in court, in prision, even down to the way the girls, the families and the court acted. If you liked the movie version, then get your hands on this play. It is not to be missed.

Every now and then you luck into a beautifully produced book which changes your frame of reference. "De Leon" is as close to telling us about who we are and what made our nation as any I've read.
You don't have to be an historian or a scholar or someone with a particular interest in Mexican American history to realize that the De Leon story, in Crimm's telling, is as engaging, exciting, and moving as any part of our American story. "De Leon" offers an understanding not just of a piece of family history but of a whole landscape, storied but unfamiliar to many of us. Highly recommended!

Excellent historical mystery/suspense

When an aging German banker is found, his body decapitated, hands severed, Lord Francis Powerscourt is called into action. Powerhouse has developed a reputation as an investigator but this case is bigger than anything he has tackled. A vast conspiracy to destroy the British Empire threatens England's place in the world. Germans and Irish republicans combine to threaten Queen Victoria--and the institutions that British power rests upon. Before his investigation is complete, Powerscourt will be shot at several times, develop interest in early arson research, and put his own wife at risk.

Author David Dickinson draws a convincing picture of Britain at the end of the 19th century. Victoria nears the end of her long reign and the entire Empire prepares to celebrate her jubilee. Yet already, Germany (still allied with Britain at this time) sees its place as the dominant nation of the world and views Britain as its primary threat.

Powerscourt makes a sympathetic protagonist. He is clever enough to make a difference, willing to throw himself into the investigation, and very much in love with his wife and family. Scenes where Powerscourt plays cricket or visits his tutor add depth to this interesting character. His curiosity about arson plays into the story and also shows the type of talent that makes Powerscourt an effective investigator.

Dickinson introduces enough subplots to keep up reader interest. Even minor characters such as Dominick Knox of the Irish Office tantilize the reader interest. Unlike GOOD NIGHT SWEET PRINCE, the earlier novel in this series, DEATH AND THE JUBILEE is conservative rather than questioning of authority. Both novels are definitely worth the read.

The recipes are truly delicious, the step by step menus are easy to follow, practical and at the same time elegant; the pictures are mouth-wateringly beautiful. The fusion of European and American cuisine makes for an interesting blend. "Delicious" is both a chic cofee-table book and a very practical cookbook with lots of soon to be favorite recipes.

I enjoyed this book. Not only did I learn how to think through the building of a database, I became a lot clearer on the data analyses for which our school and school district are aiming. I would recommend this book to anyone needing to understand databases.

Great Paranormal Read!

Review Date: 2007-06-23
Victoria Chapman has created a masterpiece with all the elements we look for in a romance novel.

We have a dark brooding hero. Well, there are two heroes--you pick your favorite, and I'll pick mine .

The story is about Jane, a woman that has problems galore. Her job is threatened, her boyfriend is a cretin, and life isn't looking so hot when she meets the neighbor.

Ah, the dark brooding neighbor. But is he more than he seems to be? Jane's enemies start to disappear, and her luck suddenly improves.

And, what about Patrick, the handsome FBI Agent... Oh, the possibilities! If you want a good read, this is it!
