Outstanding book, a hidden gem.

If you had a hypothesis that the quality, usefulness, and, most importantly, ability to contribute to profitable trading, of trading-related books are inversely related to their price, this book would be strong evidence in your favour. At the risk of over-selling this book, it is simply outstanding. By all means spend a lot of money on some of the better known (better marketed?) trading-related books out there, but this book provides value far beyond its price tag.

Most books that purport to give instruction on trading techniques (trend assessment, entry and exit points, and so forth) usually include a section at the end on "money management", "risk management", or some such topic. This book turns that practice on its head; the first 51 pages, headed "Philosophy" are devoted to understanding how to become profitable, by finding the common ground among profitable traders, then explaining expectancy and how to use it to create a profitable trading approach. This section of the book alone is incredible and will change how you think about your trading.

Part two of the book (the next 100 pages) gives practical advice on applying the philosophy, with sections on defining the trend, price-patterns trading, using confluence to lower risk and increase the probability of a profitable trade, using micro-patterns, and so on.

Part three of the book applies the information in Parts 1 and 2 to real examples.

One thing I do not understand is why the author titled the book "...for Australian Stocks". The philosophy and the practical applications of the analysis are all relevant to any exchange-traded financial instrument. All of the examples are Australian stocks, so maybe thats why. On another note, I don't use all of his analytical techniques, there is enough in this book to pick and choose the techniques that suit. I believe that the philosophy as discussed in part 1 of the book, though, is non-negotiable and should be used by all traders.

This book details the life of a shipping investor shipwrecked off Australia's coast in the early 1800s. He struggles with loneliness, develops relations with indigenous peoples, weds an aboriginal wife, has children -- and all the while tries to find his way back to "civilization."

de Rougemont uses clear, inviting, inventive language to describe his triumphs and losses. No hidden meanings or complicated subtexts here; just a ripping good yarn based on this fellow's endless adventures. And no analytical coldness or floods of facts, either -- this guy lived fully and completely on every level and conveyed his triumphs and disappointments stoutly and directly.

Fine verse

It is crazy that this book should be out of print. What are publishers thinking of? The verses are a delight, though they become increasingly tragic as the book progresses - "The Sea Bell" is a devastating account of something like clinical depression, yet like many of the rest it has a strange beauty. On the surface much is easy-to-read verse, but often has subtle allusions to deep matters. Many links with "The Lord of the Rings" for those who know where to look, and, I think, an unusually personal account of Tolkien's own struggles to find beauty, wonder and enchantment in the bleak modern world - it is only coincidence that "The Sea Bell" is the only one of his major works for publication written in the first person?

A Good Introduction to Percy the Park Keeper and His Animal Friends

The title says it all. Percy the park keeper wakes up one day in the aftermath of a heavy storm. His animal friends are displaced. He helps them find a new one. The story is simple and pretty straight-forward. Its execution however is heart-warming and well-paced. Living in the Philippines, you do see the damage and destruction caused by typhoons. This book will certainly help children understand the effects of natural disasters. Furthermore, it presents the young readers of what to do in these cases as an individual and as a community.

This book is recommended to all.

The choices we need to make over the next 25 years

This is an important albeit not uncontroversial contribution to the field of international political economy. The book tries to answer the question whether the world capitalist system is in crisis and the paths available for future world development. The works are firmly located within the world system thesis expounded by Wallerstein in many of his previous works.

The book intoruduces the concept of 6 vectors within which future paths can be examined. These are the inter-state system; world production; world labour force; human welfare; cohesion of states; and the structures of knowledge.

The book displays the weaknesses inherent in the world system thesis. These include overstating the degree of integration of the economies of the world and thus not taking into account the emergence of "non-states" run either by armed bandits or by organised crime.

The book does not deal adequately with the current state of the state. Given the debate around MNCs and their increasing expansion into areas which were the domain of the state this is an issue needing serious appraisal.

The depiction of this era as being a post US hegemonic era is also an area which will be contested by many writers, not least of all the Fukuyama's of the world.

Wallerstein concludes that the future depends onm how the following factors develop: * the extent to which there is loyalty to citizenship;

* the level of security through police order; the extent to which military orders are maintained; * level of welfare especially in relation to health and food distribution; * stability of religious institutions.

Hardback bound in blue cloth with dustcover. 533 pages, over 100 photo illustrations and maps, index. "The book tells not only of the wide-spread and varied operations of the Australian squadrons in the S.W.P.A. and Australian individuals in Burma but of the difficult problem of allocating command responsibilities within a force part of which was assigned to General MacArthur and part controlled by the Minister for Air through his Chief of Air Staff. The story of Japanese reactions to Allied air operations has been told with the help of enemy records which put familiar events in a new light."

Too often Australia's development is written off as a bunch of British prisoners sent there for punishment - when in fact there were some notable individuals in its history. "Alexander Collie: Colonial Surgeon, Naturalist, and Explorer" is a look at one of those notable individuals, Alexander Collie, a renown scientist from Scotland who did much to help the colony in its early days and helped establish it for future generations. A complete look at a oft-forgotten individual, "Alexander Collie: Colonial Surgeon, Naturalist, and Explorer" is highly recommended for community library biography collections.
