I liked the binding of the book, it was easy to keep open on the seat next to me. The real problem with it is the lack of dinstinction beween types of roads, dirt or pavement. This makes a big difference when you are driving in Vermont.

This book presents a history of Vermont from pre-historic times until about 1930. Rather than focusing on names, dates, and chronologies, the author seeks to tell us the stories behind the major events in Vermont history. While some parts of the book are quite interesting, others drag on and the book could have used a heavier hand in editing. The strongest and most interesting feature today is that the author communicates to us the beliefs that Vermonters of her generation had about their state.

I have read all of the books in this series so far. While I enjoy reading these, I find the storylines and the characters are getting progressively more annoying.
While in the first two books we are slowly introduced to each character, by book 4 (this one is book 4) we are now pretty familiar with all of them. I have to say that I find Taylor's character to be the most interesting but I am starting to get absolutely annoyed with the DJ character. For one thing, she is way tooooo perfect - although things seem to happen to her - somehow she just smiles and makes it all disappear. I am exagerating, but that is the message behind the writing when it comes to this character. I mean DJ absolutely is in passive/reaction mode ALL THE TIME. Somehow, she just seems to sit there and EVERYTHING and EVERYBODY just seems to happen to her. It would be soooo nice to actually see DJ be pro active for a change.
Also, the character of Conner has got to go. I mean he has now dumped (and wanted back) DJ twice and yet!! she still manages to 'like him and be his friend'. What a great message to send to YA out there, its okay if the guy keeps dumping you for someone else - always be there waiting for him and whatever you do - don't ever call him on it.
Also, the religious tone in this book is getting a little bit over the top. I thought this theme was well-blended into the storyline in the first few books, but in this one - the author does not even bother to hide her preachy side. The conversation between DJ and Conner about sharing a bed was just too out there - especially since they were actually talking about sharing a bed and NOT about sex.
I will probably continue to read the other books in the series only because I am curious to see how this will turn out - but I have to say that I am worried about the future releases.

All through this book, I kept remembering that writer's workshop mantra, "Show, don't tell". Being constantly told what characters were feeling and why they were doing things was annoying. The author definitely needed the assistance of a good editor or a good writing coach, because this telling-us-everything habit seriously marred what might have been an interesting story.

Although her descriptive writing is often marvellously picturous, I found it sometimes detailed to the point of being tedious. This story moves slower than the two prominently featured oxen. I really did try to read this, but by page #131 I was so bored it simply had become a chore and I gave up. Those with more patience than I may like it, but there are so many other books to read I couldn't waste anymore time on this one. Sorry, but what good is a review if it's not honest?

The Simple Life by Ruth Porter is an engaging tale depicting the reality of our human tendencies and inevitable, and the observation that those particular connections to our nature may be our most important and influential connections. Tactfully relating to its readers as the intimate tale of a rural tragedy, The Simple Life is an intuitive and intricate metaphor for the beauty and disposition which we as humans place ourselves into every day through out our lives, regardless of predetermined or understood truths. The Simple Life is very highly recommended to all readers of general fiction for its deftly presented message and an invaluable understanding of human nature and reality as a piece of modern American literature.

This book has plenty of instruciton, sample problems, and practice problems to get a student through an intro calc course easily and maybe more advanced ones too. It contains basic calculus as well as a few sections on calculus of several vairables. This edition for the University of Vermont gives the regular text plus several hundred pages with geometry, trig and stats. If you go to the University of Vermont, the curriculum will require this book. At other schools, this is better than the standard 3rd ed. text because it has basic information you could have missed in previous classes or can be useful just for a refresher.

I'm not really sure if this book stands out that much from the countless calc books that have been written, but the selection of problems is quite good. We use this book at Santa Barbara City college. It is a good book to teach from because the overall coverage of topics is good. Some of my students have complained that the book is hard to read. Well, I thought that too when I first learned from Larson and Hostetler. If you are are a student reading this, I would reccomend Stuart's Calculus book over this one. There is one thing I need to comment on that definitely has confused some of my students. Mr. Tomastik doesn't feel the need to devote a section of the text to partial fraction expansions, but he uses those ideas in the text, especially in the sections on solving differential equations!!
Only If You Already Know Calculus...

Unfortunately you may be required to buy this book for your class, and have no say in whether it should be used. But if the option is there, my suggestion is you run as far as possible from this text. Unless you already have a good knowledge of calculus, you may find yourself thoroughly and ridiculously lost as you are led through this book. In my experience with mathematics texts, most follow a predictable pattern; most sample problems will follow a step-by-step explanation of how the problem is solved, while explaining WHY the problem is solved in that particular manner. Through its entirety, this text leaves out the WHY. Being that this book is not used for higher level calculus courses (at my university, it is a requirement for a freshman year math course), it is perplexing that it is not written to cater towards its audience. Assuming you are not a mathematician or do not absolutely love math, this particular book leaves one feeling mentally challenged.

I read the other reviews and was shocked by what happened to those people. We spent two weeks in New England last summer and booked all our reservations from this wonderful resource. Every place we stayed was exactly like it was described in the book. An example of some of the inns we used were The Inns At Mill Fallls (wonderful and top knotch in every detail),The Dan'l Webster Inn (the dining room was excellent and service was also fabulous),Nauset House (a great value, interesting guests and a breakfast to remember), The Rangeley Inn (wonderful small communtiy, beautifully decorated and delicious food). We would use this resource again.
Be careful with this book!

My husband used this book to plan a romantic getaway for our wedding anniversary in New England. From this book's description, a place named the 'Water's Edge Inn' sounded like the perfect option. However we arrived to find it a horrid place with tacky decor in the common buildings and were given a dark room with stained bedspread, a tiny window overlooking the parking lot, tacky old furniture, and decor last updated in about 1958.
As with any travel book, the author may only place ads for those that pay for them. However, I am deeply disappointed with how completely misleading the descriptions were.

This book also recommends The Vermont Inn in Killington, which was infested with fruit flies. When I tried to check out one day earlier, the innkeeper refused to credit my deposit, and I am taking it up with the credit card companies, as well as writing to all the guidebooks about the lousy service.
I am complaining to the guidebook to see if they will update their review.

I liked this book and used it for some paddling & camping in NH. It gave nice descriptions of the water conditions and paddling descriptions. I agree that it's not a 'how to' book on camping. It's a reference for people who know camping already and are looking for rivers to paddle & camp along.

This book's title is misleading, and provides next to no info about camping. Its information about water conditions and white water classifications is pathetic (and unsafe) as well. More information is available about the rivers the author chose to include in the DeLorme Vermont Gazeteer and Atlas. I wish I didn't order this book, it will become camping toilet paper or an emergency fire starter.

It's disappointing to take home a book which is subtitled "Tales of a Country Doctor," and then read in the fine print of the prologue, "There will be some who ... will complain about the _fact_ of a particular matter [being] ... in need of correction.... You are in the minority. The sooner you learn ... that the greatness of Truth is that it transcends the lowly fact, the better off you will be."
In other words, not only is this another Palmer wannabe, but it's pure fiction masquerading as down-home fact.

Mismatch is being marketed as if it were a new Tami Hoag book, typical of her recent mystery offerings. It is not. Several of her older, light-weight romance style books have been re-packaged and are being offered as if new presumably to capitalize on her current reputation. This is the second time in the past few months that I fell for this.
Mismatch's publication date is 2008. After I received it and read the first few pages, I could immediately tell that this was definitely not something that I would normally read. I checked the inside cover and knew why. The Copyright date for the book is 1989. The Copyright date for the "Cover image" is 2008. Old book, new cover.
The age of the book alone would not have caused me to give it the 1 Star rating. Lots of terrific reads are older than that. And, the basic premise was okay, if unoriginal -- two incompatible people are thrown together and despite their difference, are irresistably drawn to each other. The core problem for me was that there was not much else to the book. The plot was almost non-existent, the character development was shallow (and it is a stretch to even reference characterization at all with respect to this book), and the writing was completely uninspired. Other than the mundane descriptions of mutual lust, the most exciting thing that happens here is a sheep chewing up the pages of a report that then has to be re-copied and sent again.
Spoiler Alert - Just joking. There can't be a spoiler. From the minute the two characters meet on Page 7 and the silly descriptions of their desire begin on Page 11, you already know what the outcome will be. And the journey getting there could not duller.
