A very honest look into one of Vermont's greatest men

Deane C. Davis was my step grandfather. I spent many summers on his Morgan Horse ranch in Montpelier Vermont during my youth. What was most special about our relationship was the fact that I always felt like I was his closest and best friend. He treated me with unconditional love and respect. What is fascinating is that if you speak to anyone who knew him, they felt the same way. He and I spent many hours riding his Morgans in the hills and back roads surrounding his property. It was during those intimate rides that I was able to ask him anything that was on my mind. We discussed the past, family situations, politics etc. He once told me that he always felt like a senior in highschool, because the world was always filled with excitement and adventure. Nancy Graff does an excellent portrayal of my step grandfather. I know she spent hundreds of hours interviewing him before he died in December of 1990. And I know she like so many others had the same love and respect as I did.

The Jacobs boys on the front cover with Artie featured inside too! Lots of other familiar faces inside of people I have grown up, went to school and worked with. Vermont Northeast Kingdom readers will recognize many of the people in the photos. A great book to read and enjoy. It's a keeper and Vermonter dot com heartily approved!

Timeless knowledge

I found this excellent biography about Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of the Christian Science faith, to be well-written & insightful. The historical background gives the reader glimpses into the life of a family in the early 1800's in New England, while the charming illustrations enhance the feel of a bygone era. Mary Baker Eddy's spiritual journey is documented meticulously without the slightest element of proselytizing by the author. This book is suitable for not only teenagers, but anyone from any faith background who is curious about the beliefs of Christian Scientists - an outstanding introduction.

Good book for students of Italian
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-23
This book, written in Italian, is based on a vocabulary of about 1200 words (Level B). Difficult words are explained in simple Italian (no English translations), and throughout the book you will find many drawings of animals, objects or situations that provide additional help in understanding the story.

The story tells the life of a Catholic priest in a small Italian village just after the war. He has to reconcile the political views and rules of the city government with the social needs of his congregation--and he does so in a sometimes humorous, sometimes pathetic, way. Some of the problems and solutions are quite bizarre but give interesting insight into a different culture.

Other Italian books for advanced beginners are "Ti ho sposato per allegria" by Natalia Ginzburg, "Mio marito" by Dacia Maraini, "Veleno a colazione" by Tiziana Merani (with CD), "La casa sulla scogliera" by Cinzia Medaglia (with CD), and "Delitto in piazza del campo" by Maria Luisa Banfi (with CD).

Train up a child, and watch him produce when he is old.

This is Dick B.'s latest title, and it is the first of four exclusively devoted to A.A. Cofounder Dr. Bob. I like it because it reminds me of my own training as a youngster and the backdrop my family, religion, and education provided. Both my parents were professionals. They saw to my learning about the Bible. They urged my attendance at Virginia Military Institute. And they applauded my service in the Marine Corps. And all this has been put to use in my new life as a married man, business person, Bible student, and outreach to people in recovery. That's the Dr. Bob story. People just haven't known of the excellent training A.A.'s Dr. Bob received as a youngster in St. Johnsbury, Vermont--training in the Bible, prayer, conversion, quiet time, love, and service. The very items he translated into early Akron A.A. when he turned to God and to sobriety and made a new life for himself and thousands of others. I learned here about the influence of his family, church, Sunday school,Christian Endeavor work, YMCA exposure, conversions and revivals, and the solid and stern religious education and discipline he received at St. Johnsbury Academy. The book is an inspiration who look back on their parents and youth with respect and a certain awe. It is a spiritual tool for those who want to do as Dr. Bob did when he and Bill Wilson developed the first and original A.A. program in 1935 and based it on God, the Bible, love, and service.

Vermont's Long Trail Guide a must for hikers
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-14
The Green Mountain Club's "Long Trail Guide" is your bible to the stars. The guide breaks the roughly 275 mile trail from Canada to the Massachusetts border into 12 divisions. A summary section covers each division with topo maps opposite a page of trail intermediary shelters, mountains, gaps, elevations and distances from point to point. Public Campgrounds near the Long Trail is given in another section. The beginning gives descriptions of each section, shelter capacity, etc. I have been hiking sections broken into eight day segments along with six other guys. At first I did not have a guide and counted on our leader who did have one. The problem is that we all hike at different rates and I was not aware of some interesting side trails. The guide covers all the side trails plus elevations. Anyhow, I bought a guide and will not leave to hike the next section of the Long Trial without it.

The views of the stars from outside Glen Ellen Lodge was majestic as was the moon rising in a red ball over Mount Washington in the White Mountains. On a clear day you can see all the way to Mount Washington - what a view. If you have a good 35 mm camera with telephoto lense bring it. Your pictures will be worth the extra weight.

This book is a thoroughly enjoyable account of the last 60 years of Vermont's history. Sherman does a masterful job of weaving in details from all aspects of life. He even makes politics interesting- -something very few writers do well. His facts are supported and personalized by countless interviews with the people who made history.

Excellent Overview Of Northern New England
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-23
FODOR'S MAINE, VERMONT & NEW HAMPSHIRE, 11TH EDITION is an excellent overview of the northernmost New England states. In addition to telling the reader about available opportunities in each area for recreation, dining, nightlife, shopping, and lodging, it also discusses the history of the area and mentions where you can go to learn about the history of each state. Anyone who, in 1984, saw the based-on-fact movie WHY ME?, in which the lead character's face is virtually destroyed in a car wreck caused by a drunk driver, might enjoy reading the Maine section's blurb on the home of anti-alcohol crusader Neal Dow, who invented Prohibition in 1851, while people who want inspiration to fight for what's important to them will love the parts of the Vermont section about Ethan Allen-related sites. Granted, this book does manage to miss some independent book and record stores, and includes little or nothing about radio stations in each area, but overall, it gives you a great picture of what northern New England is really like.
