This is a splendid book, originally published by the Tennessee Historical Society, and sold at the Tennessee State Museum. Photographs and descriptions are excellent, as are the examples. The book is not engaged in "price guessing" and the like. Rather, it is designed for the person who is familiar with the construction of period furniture and who is cognizant of the terminology. It is highly recommended for collectors, dealers and anyone else interested in ways and furnishings of the past.

I bought this for my husband at Christmas. He loves it! Very cool book..super old. Heck, even if you don't read it, would make a good coffee table book for a conversation starter.

Make no mistake, this one is the small, "red book" that all other books refer to. If you want the real deal this is it. Evidently it is still printed in small volume, as several buisnesses in Adams sell it. The Adams museum, and the Bell Cave, both have it in stock in "new" condition. Both of these places have relatives there, who were a part of the mystery. Also these 2 places are extremely near the main haunting area! Most all of the current residents do not want to discuss it though. It seems that two schools of thought prevail there, one is that it never really left, and another is that since it missed its last return date, refering to it may cause it's return.

i'v used this book for direction in taking the clep in english lit and the gre in lit in english. obviously it isn't comprehensive, just skims, but covers the pertinent dates, figures, and works to get you going. i recommend the Masterplots series for in-depth essays on these topics -- much better than those cliff notes which bore me.

I am currently studying to take the Oklahoma Teacher's Certification Exam in English. This book has really helped me. I don't know what I would have done without it!!
When I began studying, I only had four weeks to study. Right now, I still have two weeks left, and I am actually starting to understand British/English literature. Please keep in mind; I have only had one literature class in my life, and I took it over 14 years ago. Basically, I was literature illiterate. This book has really help me a lot.
However, I must admit that I have done a lot of additional research. [...]
I also bought the American Literature EZ 101 because the exam will cover both areas. That book is equally as excellent as this one. By using those two books, by comitting to some serious study time, and by using wikipedia when I got stuck, I feel literate!!
I truly believe that this book is a good resource for self-study--if you're willing to study!! It WILL NOT give you every little detail; it is designed as a study guide to help you get through a college class where you actually have a teacher to help when you get "stuck". On the other hand, if you're looking for a study guide, I don't think you can beat it. It is excellent!!

Stephen Bates must have invested three or four lives of time interviewing the original participants and digging up the actual letters and documents of this highly complex series of interconnected events. No, it is not out of date. The flaming issues of that date are merely the warning flickering of huge blasts of fire still to come. Scopes I was had nothing on this.
At the same time his balance and meticulous fairness to all sides is one of the most impressive things about this book. Few people can treat religiously motivated people as rational, or religion as as relevant a topic as any other free speech.
All in all it is as griping as any mystery novel yet it portrays an issue of political correctness versus individual liberty which is both a local and a national matter even more important than the future of our entire educational tradition.

A brilliant look at some of the more intractable intersections between the legal and the moral, here in the context of schools and the education of our kids. Bates wrestles with the issues, to be sure, but without preaching -- he leaves it to us, the parents, to draw our own lessons. Read this if you care about your child.

Definitely a must-have for camping in the Smokies. I was going camping there for the first time and I had no idea what to expect or where to go. I bought this guide and used it in planning my trip and selecting my campground. It was just as described--a beautiful, spacious campground with private, sheltered campsites surrounded by rhododendron bushes. This book allowed me to find exactly the kind of site I wanted. The author doesn't just list the campgrounds--any guide can do that--he describes the individual campsite arrangements as well. I know I never would have found this campground on my own. I'm going back again next year, and I'll be using this guide to choose my sites. I just wish this author would write campground recommendations for all of my destinations.

This is a wonderful Civil War book told through the eyes of William Daniel Dixon of Savannah, Georgia. It is a fascinating and detailed account of his journey from the coastal battles of the early war to the battle of Atlanta. If you are from the southeastern part of Georgia you will find it especially interesting to read about the battles and encampments around the Savannah area. Dixon recounts his personal exploits as well as his unit's: the Republican Blues. Compared to the fast travel and communications of today it is great to read about a time of letters, trains, telegraphs, long foot marches, and horse back jouneys.

The Blues in Gray is a very readable account of the Republican Blues service in coastal Georgia with exciting battles taking place on the Ogeechee River at Fort McAllister south of Savannah, Georgia. William Daniel Dixon was 23 when he began his private journal which he kept throughout his Confederate Service. He was a native of Savannah and lived his entire life there. The editor, Roger Durham, has done an excellent job making Dixon's voice heard. I am Dixon's great granddaugher and am delighted that this primary material is available to readers and scholars.

Really, to call Friel an Irish playwright is to pigeon hole him unfairly. This group of plays by Brian Friel attests to his extraordinary talent as a modern playwright, period. He dramatizes the human journey using equal doses of humor, pathos and tragedy. These remarkable, fully-dimensional characters leap of the page, or, if you're very lucky, the stage. No avid theater fan should be without these works of art. Order this collection immediately.

This book is for those interested specifically in the early part of the Civil War, when Union forces were just beginning their push into Confederate territory.
It follows the movemtents of the Army of the Tennesse and Army of the Ohio, providing specific details of what went on in various divisions.
The battles are logically, in chronological order, and the index (more than a dozen pages!) provides easy access to details.

As told by one who served under him.
Manning Force was an officer in the Union Army that moved south into Tennessee at the beginning of the Civil War. This army was involved in the fighting at Fort Henry, Fort Donelson, the carnage at Shiloh, and finally entered Northern Mississippi at Corinth - which began the initial phase of the march on Vicksburg.
Force later went on to serve under Sherman at Atlanta, and during Hood's desperate counterattacks was gravely wounded. However he survived and later became a prominent judge and politician in his native Ohio.
Along with a number of other former Union Civil War officers, Force helped write the multi-volume "Campaigns of the Civil War" series in the early and mid-1880s. The series became extremely popular with that generation which was beginning to forget about the Civil War.
Even after over 20 years, General Force was able to provide his reads with a sense of the scope of Grant's plans in the spring of 1862. He also sheds light on the operations and generalship of John Pope, who was then a rising star in the Union Army by his successes at New Madrid, Island Number 10, and Corinth - only to fail fast when he went east to confront Bobby Lee later that year. Here Force shows that Pope was NOT the braggart or ne'er do well later Civil War histories made him out to be, as his campaigns along the Mississippi were just as successful as Grant's were, though he faced considerably less resistance.
Force honorably sheds light too, on Grant's opposite - the well-respected and reluctant Confederate Major General Albert Sidney Johnston, quoting much from the late General's son's biography. Forced south after the fall of Fort Donelson, Johnston turned around and surprised Grant at Shiloh Church (Pittsburg Landing) only to be mortally wounded in a description by Force that is pretty terse rather than the dramatic tales of how he could have lived had a tourniquet been applied. With Johnston's death, and the arrival of Union reinforcements, the Confederate surge collapsed - and the Union armies was able to clear western Tennessee and North Mississippi of their foe. With his military experience, General Force was able to illuminate much of the action and tactics involved during this major battle as well as the other campaigns mentioned in this work.
This reprint has the original tiny lettering and ink maps of the period, so it may be a bit difficult to read, as all of the books in this series are. Still, it is a major account of the Shiloh Campaign, and a wonderful addition by a former serving officer in the Civil War enthusiast's bookshelf.
