An extraordinary multicultural journey
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.

In "Faith Ringgold," author Robyn Montana Turner has assembled a superb introduction to the artist for whom the book is named. Turner combines a well-written biography of Ringgold with a wealth of photographs from all phases of the artist's life, full-color reproductions of many of her classic creations, and other interesting materials.

An African-American artist who blends African, African-American, and European themes and techniques in her work, Ringgold is a fascinating multicultural creator. This book gives the reader a good sense of the journey she has taken towards her comprehensive artistic vision. It is fascinating, for example, to see a reproduction of da Vinci's "Mona Lisa" together with Ringgold's mixed-media portrayal of African-American children dancing in front of "Mona Lisa" at the Louvre museum in France. Turner's "Faith Ringgold" is a visually stunning book which just may inspire a few artists of the next generation.

Dempsey has done an outstanding job of pulling together Native and non-Native viewpoints of the Whiskey trade in Montana and the Canadian Prairie Provinces. This is one of the best overall historical studies of the trade and its effects on the Native people, the Northern Plains, and politics in both the U.S. and Canada. With strong backgrounds of those involved in the trade, and specific events concerning those traders, and the Native people on an individual and tribal basis, it makes for an interesting read.
I strongly recommend it for those interested in the development of the Northern Plains!

The Flood of '64, David Long's second collection of short stories, is a superbly crafted assortment of insights into humanity. His characters are deftly treated with care and compassion to the point where readers can empathize with them-they can feel for them. The characters in this collection make the same decisions and mistakes, they feel the same pain as I, until I can't help but care for them. The writing in these stories is at times stunning, and the life David Long instills in his characters makes this book nothing less than precious to me.

This is a good Flora, if you want to do some serious botanizing in Glacier Park and the surrounding area this is a must have. I highly reccomend it to botanists, botany students, those with a very deep interest in botany and especially to native plant gardeners in Montana. I have found a few errors in the three years I have used this book, but it is the best book to have if you are in Glacier. You might supplement with Flora of the Pacific Northwest.

This Book is a Great Tool for Planning a Montana Fly Fishing Trip
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-21
I purchased this book about six months ago. I've traveled to Montana in the past to fish, and was planning another trip this summer. While we planned to fish some old, familiar rivers such as the Yellowstone, the Madison and the Gallatin, we also wanted to try some new waters that we hadn't fished before. My wife and I spent time reading the information on the various rivers discussed in the book, and decided to also spend time in the Missoula area. We used the book not only as a tool to decide where we wanted to fish, but we also used the maps to get us where we needed to go. The end result was a successful fishing trip to Rock Creek and the Bitterroot, which was certainly aided by this exceptional book. By the way, the authors are incredible photographers; their photos in the book are great. I recommend that anyone contemplating a fly fishing trip to Montana purchase this book prior to their trip.

A great written history of mountain aviation in Montana.
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 1998-02-21
Steve Smith's book about the history of Johnson's flying Service is an exciting realistic account of Bob Johnson's flying legacy. Smith incorporates many anecdotes, historical accounts and factual information about mountain aviation. If you like to read about Ford Trimotors, brave pilots, and Montana history, you should read this book.
