I picked up the book awhile back and set a goal to ride every trail within. The trails vary widely and as such it seems that anyone with a mtn bike would benefit by having a copy on hand. I've done all of the rides in SE Fla in the guide and plan to ride the SW trails asap. Anyhow, safe cycling to all and I give this guide a high rating!.... Seth, Coral Gables

I consider myself a pretty knowledgeable Disney fan, that being said I was hopeful for a new and interesting book of Disney facts. Well, boy did this deliver! The Lost Journal is full of fun facts, hidden Mickey's (some I knew of and some I didn't) and really interesting information about so many of the rides.
It was great to spend the afternoon reading this and remember all the places in the park where the hidden Mickey's might be, and planning our next trip to the parks. I will defiantly have this guide with me as we tour the parks again this summer, in search of all the clues to complete the puzzle in the front of it. This is a great book for kids as well, very easy to read and understand. The size is great and will fit perfectly in our backpack at the park.
I highly recommend this guide for all the Disney fans out there.

Cultures of the Americas - What Shaped Them?

This book, an edited volume of archaeological studies of the possible relationships between the cultures of the Southeast and the cultures of Mexico and Central America, provides a much-needed analysis of the ways in which the peoples of the Southeast - especially those surrounding the Gulf of Mexico - may have shared elements of culture prior to European contact.
It has long been argued that the Mississippian societies observed by the earliest Spanish explorers were strongly influenced by the cultures of Mesoamerica, particularly the Olmec, the Toltec, and the Aztecs. This book takes a serious, detailed look at the ways in which such influence may have taken place prior to European contact, via water through the Gulf of Mexico and through the dissemination of elements such as platform mound construction, cultural symbols, and food resources such as maize. The only criticism I have of the book is a bias amongst the authors towards a systemic, materialist view of cultural development; Binford's New Archaeology is largely a dead letter, and it is crucially important to understand the role of systems of belief and ideas in cultural development, rather than attributing all such development to environmental factors.
However, that's a minor quibble with what is otherwise a fantastic beginning study of the ways in which cultures of North and Central America influenced each other. Traversing the Gulf of Mexico is relatively easy, and platform mounds from Safety Harbor and Crystal River in Florida all the way to the earthworks of the Mexican coast attest to common influence and systems of belief. It's good to see modern archaeologists begin to take a serious look at the mechanisms through which such influence took place.

Originally from Cuba, Josefa Gonzalez-Hastings is the head chef and owner of the Haban Cafe in Gulfport, Florida. In The Habana Cafe Cookbook, Josefa draws upon her years of experience and award-winning expertise to present a culinary compendium of "nuevo Latin cuisine" combined with traditional recipes handed down through her family from her mother and aunts. This showcase of Cuban recipes ranges from Frituras de Bacalao (Codfish Fritters); Bolliche a La Naranjada (Pot Roast with Orange Sauce); and Rabo Encendido (Oxtail Stew); to Platanos en Tentacion (Baked Sweet Plantains); Habana Tropical Punch; and Manzanas Rellenas En Almendras (Stuffed Apples with Almonds). Enhanced with family stories, advice on Cuban food and preparations, and an impressive insert of color photography, The Habana Cafe Cookbook is a welcome and recommended addition to any and all kitchen cookbook collections!

Gary Monroe has given us a brief history of Harold Newton in his most recent book of 26 pages of text and 5 photographs and 62 high quality plates. The book is similar in size and format to his previous work: The Highwaymen, Florida's African-American Landscape Painters, 2001, also published by the University Press of Florida. Though claiming his first love is photography, the easily read history compiled through personal interviews with the subject's friends, including other artists, belies his deep appreciation for this segment of Floridian history. He allows us a glimpse into the life, loves and very character of Harold Newton. The paintings reveal that facet of the artist as well. Gary Monroe has done us a real service in telling the story and selecting some of the artist's works to treasure.
