The story alone is pretty fun, with some amazing and sometimes a little scary stories of predicaments for Lassie and Corey Stuart. An earthquake sets them off!

And there is a full color illustration on every other page, opposite the text, which really makes this book fun. It makes me want to buy more of these Big Little books.

I came across this book by accident, and what a happy accident! I read it like a novel that I couldn't put down. If you are interested in the subject of native art, Alaska, or are just fascinated with cultural histories in general, you will enjoy this book. It is informative, educational, and feeds the passion for the simple beauty that exists in certain parts of the world like the Alaskan territories. In addition it has inspired and informed me to better plan my future trips to the area. Ray is real, and the book is beautiful with many pictures and descriptions of interesting facts and places. If you are planning a trip to Alaska, this is a book to have. Also described in her book is how to tell the difference between real and fraudulent art. If you plan to collect any pieces, this knowledge would be invaluable. This is one to keep.

What a wonderful book! Libby Beaman accompanied her husband to the Pribilof Islands (1879-1880). One hundred years later, her granddaughter gathered her journal, sketchbook and letters together to form this book of Beaman's experiences in that remote outpost. At the worst, they spent seven weeks snowbound by severe storms with limited food and 40 below zero temperatures outside. At times they had to stay in bed all day trying to keep warm. Starvation threatened their lives and she almost died from that and from scurvy.
Libby's accounts of daily life, of the fur trade, people and conversations and of nature form a remarkable picture of a long-ago life.

Amazon recommended this book on-line to me as something I'd be interested in based on past purchases. I am so glad I read it -- I was laughing out loud in some places. Very well written -- you feel like you're right there with the characters in Alaska. Very quick read, too.

I have never read this book but all my friends have. They keep on telling me i have to read it and that its the best book ever written. Im buying it today.
