This is not only a historical account of the Alaskan Airlines but a story about the lives of the people who carved out a dream in an unforgiving wilderness. The organization's culture reflects the personalities, values, and experiences of the people, past and present, which built this company. The author takes you back in history to the early 1930's through the eyes of the first pilots who dared to fly the Alaskan wilderness. Their courage, strong determination, and refusal to accept failure built the founding principles of the organization we know today. Satterfield provides the reader a vivid historic depiction of the evolution of air travel, the Alaskan Airlines, the people, and their place in Alaska's history.

The illustrations in this book are just beautiful, and the book is both educational and lots of fun. Kids LOVE the chants/sing-alongs, especially the one where they get to howl like wolves. This book would be great for anyone teaching kids about Alaska animals.

I was very impressed with this book, however it cannot truly be appreciated without seeing the art, so it's too bad the cover isn't displayed on this site. The CD makes it extra fun for kids. A worthwhile investment!

This is a great alpine guide book to some of the best climbs in Alaska. Historical background, detailed descriptions and clear photos help fuel your interest for each area.

Stephen Stringham's book is everything the title suggests. It is the consummate "Bear Safty Manual." Living in the lower 48 does not give one much daily contact with wild animals, much less Brown and or Black bears. However, you cannot visit Alaska without encountering the creatures that are native to the land. If bears are not the most important citizens of Alaska, they certainly require your attention if you meet one. Dr.Stringham manual will teach you how to make the proper introduction upon making your bear encounters.

Whether you are going north to fish, hunt, hike or go camping their are rules of bear etiquette that should be adhered to. I live in coastal rural Alaska and I share space with literally hundreds of bears of both the brown (grizzly) and black species. They are commonly sighted here and may be encountered even in the largest Alaskan city, Anchorage. It is of vital importance that they be treated with respect or very bad things can happen rather quickly as attested to by serious maulings that occur somewhere in the state each year.

I have a bookshelf filled with literature on bear biology, bear behavior & bear safety. I recently read Alaska Magnum Bear Safety Manual by Dr. Stephen Stringham and I believe it is the most comprehensive and helpful book available for anyone who finds themselves in bear habitat which is virtually anywhere in Alaska. Dr. Stringham has spent years studying bear behavior & body language and his book gives the reader a well organized set of guidelines to follow to minimize the danger of bear encounters.

The author does not overstate nor does he minimize the potential danger that can befall the unprepared hiker, tourist, or fisherman who surprises a bear. Rather his book provides important instructions, well reasoned and explained, to be followed when one encounters bears. I send his book to friends coming from the lower 48 to visit Alaska because it is the result of thousands of bear encounters experienced by the author and it serves to make the visitor safer and adds to their appreciation of our magnificant wildlife.

This remarkable anthology brings together texts from 15 Alaska Native languages with facing translations, and contemporary Alaska Native stories, essays & poems. The book seems to me to be a great service to the native peoples of Alaska, and should be of interest to any reader with a concern for preserving the native literary heritage. An unusual and exciting reading experience.

I was amazed to find a book that looked unpromising turn out to be a fascinating read. I discovered new voices and intriguing ideas from kinds of people I've never met. The oral tradition people seemed to be from a different planet, and the contemporary native writers like Susie Silook and Diane Lxeis Benson read like very sophisticated moderns with a distinct native style.

This is a book written for teenagers but can be enjoyed by all ages. It is well written and is a easy book to read. It guides you through Alaska's geological points of interest. After, reading this book, I felt a desire to explore Alaska and discover for myself all the hidden treasures waiting to be explored.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I felt like I knew the characters by the end of the story and definitely want to take a cruise to Alaska now!

Keith sums up the very reason I moved to Alaska in the summer of '98. The book tugs at you like the land does up here. It inspires me to take the path less travled. My only hope is, that I have half the heart Keith does, when I go on my Alaska viking. I am very fortunate, in that I have an autographed copy of the book. Signed by Keith at the 1994 Portland, Oregon Sportsman show. Great man and even better book!

This is a great book on the life and times in Alaska. He has done a great job in relaying his story to the reader. I personal have two copies and my first copy has been read so many times, the pages are falling out. Check it out. It's worth the money and the time for it to come :O)

This field guide was very useful during our recent inspection of our Alaskan property. It's small size makes it easy to carry during hiking, and it contains all the most common animals you might see throughout the state.

These are the best thing to make you study the surrounding of which you visit. I have all of the Alaska pocket naturalist subject now. I love them.
